Heh, im on the flipside of this. Last year I finished a degree in Digital Animation, and I've been applying for jobs since to no avail.

Right there with you, except I majored in Media Communications (Film Studies/Production/Screenwriting emphasis) and it's been two years without a job in my field. Tough market right now.

I have used flaming pear but for this I went low tech to get a more implied starfield rather than a realistic one
But the one thing I couldn't stand is those super thin nacelle pylons. One good shot alone could sever a pylon, not to mention that it seems to put an unnecessary strain on structural integrity.
Let's remember that 24th century starships didn't carry armor until the Defiant rolled around, so they weren't really worried about an opponent breaching their shields. Most scientifically plausible designs for near-light spacecraft don't exactly look sturdy, either. There's enough precedence for slim pylons in canon as well, and darn it, it just looks good.
There's also the matter of scale. With the usual Federation design elements, larger, thicker structures often tend to suggest a smaller ship (like the Cheyenne class, or Voyager), whilst slimmer structures suggest something bigger (Galaxy, Sovereign). YMMV.
Exactly. If everyone is OK with the TMP Enterprise's neck, then they should shut up and be fine with this. It's probably the same thickness, if not a tad thicker.
Hi TiberionHi,
Tiberion from STO forums here. Long time lurker, but I've never actually gotten around to posting. But I wanted to make sure Ilhe read this, so here goes.
I feel bad that the fan reaction might in some way have discouraged you. I hope as you have more time to reflect, you'll realize your in the company of such names as Andy Probert, John Eaves, and Herman Zimmerman. Not only because you are credited with designing an Enterprise, but because you also had your design lambasted by (a small subset of) fans because they didn't care for it. I hope you soldier onward and produce more artwork in the same way those gentlemen did.
Because no matter what the winning design was, it was going to happen. Some people who lost were going to have hurt feelings and lash out, some people who might have genuine critiques will lack the communication skills to deliver them properly, and some are just jerks.
Its a complicated issue, some people (like myself) didn't care for the way the contest was executed, and there is certainly room to argue the technical merits of what is going on in the design (as we ship nerds tend to do) but there certainly was no cause to personally insult your artistic talent. The Andy Probert painting your design is based on is one of my favorites, and it certainly feels majestic sitting like it does. Better to just let those sorts of attacks roll on by and not consider them.
I was also sad to hear that Cryptic wasn't interested in getting further input from you. This new "warp ring" rendering is very nice, and its already made me feel tons better about it being the Enterprise-F.
I don't know how familiar you are with Cryptic, but they're a pretty reasonable company, and they tend to listen to their fans pretty well, so I expect if there was a reasonable fan-request made, they'd take a step back and reconsider looking at the updates you have made to the ship. At the very least it can be one of the choose-able skins, if they already have gone "too far" in another direction.
But I understand if you're ready to move on as well. If that is the case, I won't mention it again. I do intend to continue to press them on some movement re: the fan favorite vote or some recognition of Fuzzy's ship, which I didn't like as an Enterprise, but love as a 25th century design otherwise.
In either case, I look forward to seeing you flesh out the ship, so we'll have a definitive look at YOUR vision of the ship, before we see Cryptic's take.
And congrats on that Alienware rig. I am -quite- jealous

The only technically accurate answer to that is "if it's onscreen, it's canon... unless the production company later decides otherwise."Ok, since so many have told me I am in the same company as the men who have designed all the enterprises up til now and I have heard that this ship will be considered canon. I have to ask is this true? Is it canon??? I myself would think not as it is not being seen on screen.
