But I was right when I said that Siffy changed its name just so they could put non science fiction crap on their station: food, ghosts, wrestling. Eventually someone has to come up with a real science fiction channel.
Sorry, Sci Fi changed its name to SyFy because Sci Fi wasn't a trademarkable term. If it wanted to change the name to justify moving away from sci fi then why pick a name that sounds the same? They could have changed the name to Imagine, but they didn't they chose SyFy. As much as I dislike the reality shows on SyFy they are still more science fictiony/technology focused than reality tv on other channels. I don't blame SyFy for creating them, just for not knowing how to schedule shows.
From SyFy's Blastr website -
"By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures."
