No really, why is it a laser gun now?

It's not. I didn't catch it at first either, but the Doctor is really just waving it around while River was shooting everything. River asks him what he's doing, to which he responds, "helping". Then she asks him how, he says, "I've got my screwdriver", and she says, "Why don't you go build a cabinet" or something to that effect. :guffaw:He was just waving it around, trying to look cool!

He isn't, the green bolts are physically hitting them and they're keeling over or getting knocked off their feet.

"thats really rude!" -zap-

I could have sworn that he said he was using the "drill setting." Hey, if it's a screwdriver...

I missed the part about the drill setting. I thought the bolts were coming from River. Would have been funny, not to mention totally in character if he was just waving it around trying to look menacing.

It was actually RevdKathy who pointed that out to me.

I texted DAK and told her to come look at the pic you posted... ;)

I knew I could get your attention with that text...

Who me? Like I'd know what such things look like? Honestly, the very suggestion.

(It'll burn batteries having that silly light inside!)

Looks like a giant ear cleaner to me (extra points for anyone who knows what that's from)...

That's exactly what I thought at first until I saw the green bolts and heard the drill setting part. It could be argued that the drill setting only stunned them or the Doctor was hitting them in non-vital ways, but even then that's out of character.

And yet... the way he dealt with the Silence was also out of character. Twice in an episode, perhaps more. I'm hoping that River asking the Doctor what he was doing in a gunfight will be a clue that something's off with the Doctor.

Only thing I can think of is the key to the monkey head from Secret of Money island?

Nope. I was going for the movie Parenthood. Steve Martin, Dianne Wiest, etc. :bolian:

When it also turned in to a sex toy?

Just realised I hotlinked that.

It totally does look like a sex toy...

OMG I'll be in my bunk!!!

Wait. You think that chunky, metallic gizmo with articulated prongs looks like a sex toy?! [shudders] Maybe if you like chisels and pliers in your bedroom activities ....

Edit to add: Ah. I see I've been beaten to the mind-reading observation.

You're not living up to your name!

Er ... um ... ah! I've learned to do that so I stop weirding out the normals!

Yes, that's the ticket.

No really, why is it a laser gun now?

Maybe he was sending out sonic pulses (mind out of gutter DAK!) to block the Silents lightening bolts, or intercepting and reflecting the bolts back at them? Shorting them out, sort of like he did to the Silurians' guns in "Cold Blood".

I like the theory that he was just waving it around trying to look helpful and impress River.

It looks a hell of a lot more benign than those things they come at you with in the gyn's office under the guise of an "exam".

Today's TMI statement was brought to you by the letter T and the Eleventh Doctor. :D

Kinda lends a new meaning to Amy's statement in "Time of Angels": "Ooooh Doctor, you soniced her!"

Sonic pulses is what I thought about too... It is a sonic screw driver, and can send out sonic waves at any frequency, he was just deflecting the alien's energy back at them in a chaotic manner

I just remember Dalek where the Doctor showed up with a giant gun to fight the Dalek. There's also the time he had an elephant gun in The Talons of Wang-Chiang.

^ And in "Bad Wolf" as well.

And folks so busy whining about the gun shown in the trailer for season 5 where all the Doctor does is shoot the gravity globe, obviously forgot about this scene in "The Doctor's Daughter", where he actually points a gun at the head of a human.

Both times, however, he didn't... y'know, fire.

Then again, when you're 900 or 1200 or 2400 years old, if you're traveling through the infinity that is time and space, you're going to hold (and sometimes fire) an actual weapon occasionally.
