I can't believe what happened to me today....

I really appreciate the nice comments from all of you. Obviously, this is something that I've pretty much obsessed over the last day. The thing is, it's all so sudden, I'm not really sure how to react. I'm insanely jittery over it.

It's taking me some time to process it all. Even though I haven't reached a decision, they want to fly me out first for a few days to meet people and get a feel for what I can expect. I'm sure I'll make my decision after that. I realize to just about anyone, it's a no-brainer.

If you work for a company that ACTUALLY recognizes that you have value to them, do NOT waste that opportunity. You may be surprised how rare it really is.

Grab that offer and hold on for dear life!

This.

Many large companies today see their employees as almost a necessary evil. You are NOT EVEN 'just a number' anymore. You are an expense, and if they can find a person (especially in some foreign country) who will do it cheaper, even if they are far less qualified and far less talented and even far less hard-working, they will replace you in a heartbeat with someone of substandard qualifications and work ethic, but who will 'work' for pennies on the dollar.

If you are in a company that actually cares about putting out quality product (not necessarily the cheapest, but the best!) and doing things right in the back office...and is willing to recognize and pay people who have done a great job, STAY WITH THAT COMPANY. I don't care if you have to move to the frakkin' South Pole.

Fortunately for you, San Diego has alot nicer weather than Antarctica. So bonus for you! :techman:

I say pack your shit and GO!

Let's see... San Diego that has 78 degree weather all year round... or Boston?

Win!

Congrats!

Congrats. I have Bostonian friends who moved to San Diego years ago. They've never gone back and now have family there. SD is a nice place once you get used to climate/culture change :) I understand your trepidation and aspects of leaving friends (family?) but sometimes you just need to grab an opportunity when it comes up. Fear is the mind killer...

Nice score! San Diego is one of my favorite places on earth. Granted, the state's economy is a mess, but it's totally worth that move. Whatever you're leaving behind in Boston is only a plane flight away.

This too!

You have an opportunity for a great job and a new adventure in a new city - one that could change the course of your entire life.

If for some reason, you don't like San Diego, you can always go back to Boston. It'll still be there - it won't close shop when you leave, you know? But I think that if you don't go to San Diego, you will always wonder what could have been if you'd made the move.

Congrats!

San Diego is a beautiful city. Lots to do, great weather, gorgeous California women....

:techman:

Really happy for you.. it gives me hope for all of us tied down in a sucky company with idiot bosses that there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

It has to be a major disappointment if San Diego turns out to be crap but i'm hoping it's not so congrats if you take up the offer.. sound like a once in a liftetime opportunity.

In this day and age being offered to retain your job and being paid moving expenses is unheard of. I can't say I thought much of San Diego, but if you like the company go for it; just put aside some cash to flee in case it sucks too bad to stay. I would give myself at least six months to deal with culture-shock issues; even though it is within the United States.

Wow - that's a definite compliment - they really want to keep you with the company!

You're right to take your time over the decision - "sleep on it" is always my approach, it clarifies things for me.

I agree with all. One of my brothers used to live in San Diego years ago and he loved it down there. He had to leave due to personal reasons that he wouldn't tell me about, but he spoke highly of San Diego.

I'm about to move in with my fiancee. She had never lived on her own (always either with her parents or in the dorms) so it should be interesting. It's kinda weird being on campus right now. Not to mention, I may be moving to a new city later this summer too.

congrats!
don't rub it in your other co-workers' noses though . . . that would be a dick move :p

This whole thing is just surreal and unbelievably overwhelming. I can't think straight. I just wanted to come here and post it because I need some way to vent this and share what's going on; even take some advice if anyone can provide it.

You're a lucky guy. More money, a change of scenery ... go for it son! Every setback is an opportunity in disguise, or something.

Remember - Frasier Crane left Boston and he had eleven years worth of wacky adventures with his family. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to do the same thing.

San Diego is nice. Be forewarned though, things there will probably be more expensive than they are in Boston.

Congrats man!! It's great to see hard work and intelligence pay off!! Hats off to you!

Mr Awe

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. It's just still majorly overwhelming.
