I can't believe what happened to me today....

It is great having people telling you how good you are... congratulations!

A huge bombshell was dropped on my workmates and I yesterday and it only escalated further today. Basically, our company, which is based in San Diego, is going through a massive and unprecedented reorganization. Our president was moved out of his position and a new higher up team was put in place. So my coworkers and I, who live and work in the Boston office, were informed of this yesterday and find out that our new president is taking a redeye flight to Boston to come talk to us.

We start to get very scared, because eleven people in the west coast office were slashed and we're expecting him to come out here and tell us that we're finished. He arrives at about 9:30 this morning and informs us that the Boston office is, indeed, closing down. You could have heard a pin drop after that. Shortly after that, he wants to meet with us all one on one about what's happening.

Just as I am trying to process what happened, because it all happened so fast, I wasn't prepared for what I was about to be told.

I was offered, in fact, really encouraged, to relocate to San Diego with a huge promotion. All my expenses to get me there would be taken care of and I'd be working with an extremely talented team of people are banging out some amazing content for our company.

Needless to say, I'm just... shocked. I can't believe all that's going. It's almost too much for me to take in all at once. Nothing like this has ever been offered to me before.

Here are some of the things I was told; I was "amazing asset" to the company. They want me to work with a group of "Talented and high-IQ people like you [me] (Uh, what?)."

Some of the perks; I'm not tied down. I'm not in a relationship, I have no kids, nor do I own a house; just an apartment lease. My sister lives in L.A. and so do a few friends of mine. Also, I have a buddy who lost a job as a game designer and put in a resume at a company in San Diego.

This whole thing is just surreal and unbelievably overwhelming. I can't think straight. I just wanted to come here and post it because I need some way to vent this and share what's going on; even take some advice if anyone can provide it.

I'm just not sure what's going faster right now; my head or my adrenaline.

Living in San Diego also makes attending Comic Con hassle free if it ever interested you. No worries about travel or lodging since you're already there.

With no ties in the east, and ties in L.A. (which is only two hours away) you have to give it a shot. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

I would say take it. It's a huge testament to how good the company think you are at what you do, and it would save you having to find a new job in Boston.

I know that Boston does have that law firm where William Shatner and James Spader work, but San Diego has Ron Burgundy and that it is a huge plus in my book :techman: (There's a small chance I'm confusing fiction with reality again)

Congratulations! You dodged a bullet. Good luck in your new job and please do let us know how you're doing!

If you work for a company that ACTUALLY recognizes that you have value to them, do NOT waste that opportunity. You may be surprised how rare it really is.

Grab that offer and hold on for dear life!
This. Absolutely.

I have just one word:
Go!

Yup, agree with this. Sounds like a great opportunity and you get explore a new city! Congratulations, man!! :techman:

As you have stated, it is overwhelming for you, but like the rest of the posters here, I would have to say Go for it!

You have no ties to Boston, nothing holding you back. Besides, this company wants YOU! They are willing to pay your way out there, give you a promotion, a raise, and they want YOU!

Sure, it may be scary and surreal and all that, but what an opportunity!!! A fantasitc adventure!!:bolian:

Good Luck! :)

Some things have changed since the offer. I told them I won't make any decisions until I see details worked out on paper and advised everyone else in my office to do the same. There's sort of a holding pattern right now until more information is available to us. In the meantime, I've been looking to see what's available for work around here should something not work out. There really is a lot of opportunity here, I have to say. I'll definitely let everyone know what happens.
