TrekBBS vs. the Music

I don't recall posting anything by them. I'll make sure to include one of their songs next time I review.

Eyes, you might be the perfect person to ask this. I listened to this song last night and liked it alot, but am I the only one who finds it a bit odd that this is a Canadian band that named itself after a Scottish dish, that plays Irish-inspired music?

With a name like that, I thought sure this band must be from Scotland...but the music sounded Irish and so I had to look them up, figuring no Scottish band would be so much about Irish music. I mean, I don't know THAT much about the politics of your country...but I have always been under the impression that the Irish are very proud of their history/traditions (including music) and the Scottish feel the same about theirs. So it just seemed a bit 'off' to me.

However, when I looked them up on Wikipedia, I was surprised to learn that they are from frakkin' CANADA!

Well, I didn't look them up, but I was surprised to find that they were singing Irish stuff, with a Scottish name.

However, despite the name, I didn't get a Scottish vibe off of them. You are somewhat correct, it would be very unusual to find a Scot singing Irish folk music. I thought that they were American (or Canadian, as it seems), as they didn't sound like they were from the British Isles.
You can tell, I think, most of the time. Most British artists have a distinct sound that gives away their nationality. It's the ones that have a more generic sound that make it big in America, most of the time. Lowest common denominator and all, most Americans don't realise that they aren't American, and they're successful. Talking pop and RnB mainly here, the likes of Taio Cruz and Jay Sean, as that's the dominant genre in the charts today, but it still applies to rock artists.

One of my favourite rock bands, Biffy Clyro, are Scottish, and you can tell so much that they are Scottish when they sing. I didn't get this vibe from Enter the Haggis.
I assumed they were from New York or around that area (there are a lot of Irish people there, I think, or is that just Fairytale of New York playing at me again?), and some of the band might have Scottish ancestry. That's without looking them up.

I saw Enter the Haggis at a bar in Knoxville about, oh, 5 years ago and have liked them since then. But yeah, I was say they're kind of a "generic Celtic" group in a lot of ways that kinda draws together various influences in a very Canadian way. The live CD I have of theirs features a Hava Nagila/Scotland the Brave mashup and they've also got a very up-tempo version of The Minstrel Boy. I like their stuff but I can see somebody that's from one of those places going "Ehh..." :)

Taylor Swift - White Horse
Yeah, I'm not sure that I can really talk about any particular song of Taylor Swift's without talking about her in general. I go back and forth on how I feel about her stuff. On the one hand, she's pretty and seems really nice and her music's pleasant enough. And I gotta give her credit for (by all accounts) writing her own stuff. On the other hand, her twangy-pop sound is decried by some people as part of the "death of country" - and I can kinda see where they're coming from, although Nashville's been trending that way for years anyway. Her songs are fairly interchangable and the fact that she's authentic doesn't do much when she's clearly a girl from suburbia who's not been through very much. Let her go through some bad relationships, or struggle with the negative side of fame, or go through a substance addiction, etc. and then we'll see. But maybe I'm being overly harsh. I've never heard her live (she's supposedly not a very good singer) but her stuff's nice to listen to for the most part. "White Horse" doesn't really stand out as particularly noteworthy in either a good or bad way - it's sad, but not raw, more of a melancholy-starting-to-grow-up-disillusioned song. Call it a 6/10 - I'll defend her music for those who enjoy it and I'll even enjoy it most of the time, but won't often seek it out.

Katy Perry - Hot and Cold
Haha, oh Katy Perry. Is anybody here familiar with the reviewer Todd in the Shadows who currently does pop song reviews for That Guy With the Glasses? My thoughts on Katy Perry are very similar to his - her music is the epitome of vapidness and it's really not very good. On the other hand and at the same time - much of her music is just infectious fun and I don't want to turn it off. "Hot and Cold" is probably one of her better songs (although I like her newest, "ET," minus the rap guest lyric, though in a "that's really creepy and fucked up but brilliantly so" way) - it's a big stupid pop song that revels in itself. And you know what? I like it. Katy can't sing and she's autotuned to hell, but this song is rather infectious. 7/10 for a "what the hell, why not," and I'm quite familiar with her work since I listen to pop music. ;)

Kelly Clarkson - Sober
The video's from Smallville; I'm not familiar with that part of the series, is this actually played over the show and specifically recorded? Anyway, Kelly Clarkson tends to kinda fade into the background for me. She's got a pleasant enough voice, and the instruments are fine for this song, but it doesn't leave much of an impression on me. It's enjoyable enough for a 6/10 anyway.

Why didn't I take these songs? While I'm not a huge fan of Katy Perry, both Hot N Cold and E.T are amazing, and while I haven't heard the Taylor or Kelly song, I know some of their other work, and I like it.

1. blink-182 - All The Small Things
I recognise the name of this song, and I recognise it a bit. That's very nice actually. I think this might have been a Jedward cover recently, thankfully only getting to #80, but :barf:. Apart from that, the original version of the song is very nice. 8/10

2. Evanescence - My Immortal
I can't recall ever listening to Evanescence, so this will be interesting. Wow, this is beautiful. Really beautiful. I need to listen to that more. 10/10

3. Anything You Can Do - John Barrowman and Ruthie Henshall
I'm aware of this song, although it is more of a performing song. To this end, Barrowman and Henshall do perform it very well, with enough quirks to make me forget how much I hated this one in school when it was chosen for our House Music contest (they normally choose bad ones, but this takes the biscuit), but on the performace: 6/10

1. Biffy Clyro "Bubbles"

Never heard before. Um I have mixed feelings about this...it sounds a bit strange but there are also some good melodies going on...might check out more. I don't even know how to describe it. C-Average/OK.

2. Rihanna "Fire Bomb"

Never heard before. I do know of Rihanna...she has a nice voice and most of her music is pretty good. This was nice. B-Good.

3. Twenty Twenty "Love To Life"

Never heard before. Pop/punkish. I am never too impressed by bands like this. C-Average/OK.

^ I think Eyes posted Biffy Clyro at my behest. I wanted to hear some Scottish rock, and Eyes said this band was a favorite.

I actually quite liked that selection. Thanks, Eyes, for posting it! I like it and will listen to more.

Yes...you are evil, aren't you?

1. Dope - Die Mother Fucker Die
Really glad I am reviewing your songs today. I had an altercation with my redneck next-door neighbor this morning over the fact that he thinks it completely unreasonable that I would prefer he NOT park his truck up IN my front yard, destroying a few hundred dollars worth of landscaping in the process.

This is just the kind of song to play at top volume with my windows open on his side of the house, so that he might fully share my new-found love of death metal. I know he will be very appreciative of the opportunity to experience "Die Mother Fucker Die".

Anyway, I think I'm actually getting used to this stuff, because I didn't hate it. :p 7/10

2. Murderdolls - White Wedding
First, I can't tell if that lead singer is a boy or a girl. I assume a girl by the announcement, but talk about androgynous! I can't find the boobs. Not that I wouldn't be more than moderately disturbed if I actually did find them. And lets not even talk about the lack of eyebrows of any kind.

Anyway, I loved this song back in the 80's. 6th row at Billy Idol during the Rebel Yell tour tells you all you need to know about my love of this song.

Not crazy about this rendition of it, I have to say. Much prefer the original. That band, and particularly that singer, is just too disturbing to enjoy. Although they remind me of another band, with that style & dress. I just can't place who. I've seen it before...I just can't remember where and on who. 6/10...but the 6 is mostly because that song is EPIC in it's awesomeness.

3. Mudvayne - Death Blossoms
Oh yeah! This is one of those bands off that list of Worst Bands of All Time you posted, right, Jetfire? :p:lol:

Bottom line - I'd like these guys a lot more if they would lose the stupid-ass makeup and rely on their musical skill and artistry (which is considerable) rather than on stupid shit like that.

The song was more death metalish than I'd have liked for a band on the nu metal list. But I will still listen to more of their songs. Some of the others on the list I will probably like more - I have even ordered a CD or two, you will be pleased to know.

It's DREADLOCKS NIGHT!!!!!

^
The singer from the Murderdolls is a guy...the drummer from Slipknot is also in Murderdolls...These bands are more on the Slipknot/Marilyn Manson side of nu-metal.

[edit] I looked at your selections...Good job! All good stuff. :bolian:

[add] I saw Dope live back in the day...very cool guys in that band. :)

^ Well, that first band I knew from before. Although was reminded of them last week when they popped up in the suggestions column on one of those bazillion Birthday Massacre songs I was listening to. Although maybe I should have posted an Ill Nino song, just to make Dreadlocks Night complete! (have I ever mentioned that I have a weakness for guys with good dreads? :D Maybe a holdover from being obsessed with Layne Staley for a few years back there in the 90's)

The second one is off your List of The Most Terrible Bands In The History of The Known Universe. :p

The third one I found by reading fan comments posted on videos related to one of the bands off that list I have listened to so far (Ill Nino, Nonpoint, Deftones are the ones I have listened to quite a bit)...although I can't remember for sure which band's comments led me to those guys.

Still, I like them so far. :)

Jack Off Jill - Rabiteen

Oh god, this reminds me so much of my younger teenage days when I was into more gothic rock stuff. The flashback is like 'woah!' XD. Anyhow, even though I don't really listen to that sort of music anymore I still do quite enjoy it. Especially this band and this song (though I was always more fond of My Cat.... possibly cause it was entertaining)
I give it a 7/10

Nonpoint - Mindtrip

Less keen on this however, I think it's the vocals during most of the song. I never have been keen on vocals like that and that's what's ruining the song mostly for me. The instrumentation isn't too bad (though it can occasionally dissolve into, what sounds to me, just noise)
The singer does get points however for fun hair XD
I give it a 4/10

Sevendust - Praise

I really like the lead singer's voice. Just please, god, get rid of those backing vocals. They're hurting my throat just by listening to them.
I definately prefer this one to the last one, though I have the same problem with the instrumentation. Doesn't happen as often but still. I like my clear melodies XD
Fun hair again though ^_^

I give it a 5/10

Samiiriie - 4MINUTE Mirror Mirror
Club music meets JPop. Very catchy, for what it is. I get the impression I'm enjoying it more because I can't understand the lyrics, though (as evidenced by the brief English, which it annoyed me). I'll give it a 3/5.

After School - Because of You
Same type of thing, but not quite as catchy. I think the softness kind of hurts it a bit. It loses a bit of the shamelessness of just a bold, fun to dance to song. Plus, it sounds heavily autotuned. 2/5

2NE1 - Fire
Mix of Korean and English. But everything I say about understanding the lyrics stands. Plus, by the third song, this style of music is wearing a bit thin. 2/5

^ That first one has gotta be a side project for the guy from CAKE. It's like 'CAKE: The Reggae Years' or something. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.

Sublime--Garden Grove
Not bad...something I might listen to as background music. Even on YouTube it's evident we've got pretty good sound mixing here. What I wish we had would be an instrumental version, though--maybe a guitar solo instead of the vocals, by Jeff Beck...that would be pretty sweet. (Even with the scratching I think it would work...Beck's been able to make his style work with a number of different types of music.) The one thing that drags the song down is the unfortunately tuneless vocal quality of the singer. 7/10 for having nice music, but I really wish I could strip out the vocals.

Chairlift--Bruises
First impression...oh, boy, that drumset sounds cheap, like the cheap little Casio piano I had when I was four. Those kinds of effects manage to work somehow in certain Radiohead songs (think "Sit Down, Stand Up"). The lyrics aren't much better--"vapid" is the best word that comes to mind. I'll give a little credit because I think the vocalist could've been decent with better material to work with, but not exactly impressed here. 4/10.

Led Zeppelin--The Ocean
Whew. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the band name...you just can't go wrong with Led Zeppelin. True, this isn't a "Kashmir" or "Battle of Evermore," but for good, catchy music, and that absolutely unique voice (oooooh, a capella!), this has everything you could possibly need. 8/10, and only rated that strictly because of the caliber of the band.

OK...here's mine.

^ I've been resisting posting Led Zeppelin for so long because they're so famous, it almost felt like cheating. The Ocean is one of my favorite songs (although I think the riff gets repetitive). I just knew I didn't want to pick something really obvious (such as anything off of Zeppelin IV or Immigrant Song).

^ That first one has gotta be a side project for the guy from CAKE. It's like 'CAKE: The Reggae Years' or something. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.

You've never heard of Sublime? They were one of those ubiquitous 90s bands that combined ska, punk, and reggae.
Santeria, Smoke Two Joints, What I Got.

It's been ages since I participated in this thread...

"Around Us" - Jonsi (with an accent aigu over the "o")

It's not bad, very poppy, sounds like it would be at home on Top 40 radio. It's got kind of a Coldplay-ish vibe to it in places, though it's a little more musically interesting than that would imply. I have to say, though, that the best song used in a FIFA game was easily Blur's "Song 2" in FIFA '98, and this doesn't quite measure up. ;) 6/10

Nightwish - "Meadows of Heaven"

I've heard the odd song from Nightwish in the past, and generally enjoy them. This is a ballad, while what I've heard from them in the past has been heavier\faster, but I quite like it. It's kind of like a Sarah McLaughlin song, actually. I could see her doing a stripped-down cover of this.

Ah, now that I've written that, the electric guitars come in for the bridge. Sudden 80s hair metal FTW!

8/10

Mr. Mister - "Broken Wings"

Yeah, I can't listen to this song anymore without thinking of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Still, it's a great song, classic 80s cheese which somehow becomes much greater than the sum of its parts.

9/10

1. Sarah Harmer "Basement Apartment"

Never heard before. Really good song. I enjoyed this. I would call this "Chick rock" Even though it has a pop feel. A-Excellent.

2. Barenaked Ladies "Break Your Heart"

Never heard before. I do know some of their songs...not a fan though. Good song. B-Good.

3. Two Hours Traffic "Nighthawks"

Never heard before. Very indy rock/pop sound. It was ok. C-Average/Ok.

1. Two Princes - Spin Doctors
I've always liked this song. It's just fun and has a good beat without taking itself too seriously. As you know I'm not a huge fan of this kind of music in general, but if it has a great beat, some catchy hooks and some fun lyrics, I can't resist. This song falls into that category. 8/10

2. Candlebox - Far Behind
First, let's get this out of the way: GRUNGE FOUL!!!!! :scream:

Okay...so now that that's over with, I will attempt to listen to this band with as much objectivity as I can muster.

First, I am pleased to report that I cannot tell who he's trying to imitate in this song....and since I have heard every single grunge singer singing multiple versions of their songs (and in some cases, each other's songs), that is a good thing. So he gets points for not trying to be Layne Staley or Eddie Vedder on this one (I was listening to some selections from Stone Temple Pilots "Core" today and cringed my way through the Layne Staley imitation - it was painful. So glad Scott Weiland moved away from that nonsense later on).

This song is okay, although not really grunge, IMO. Much more alt-rock. But maybe that is where they should have gone to begin with, instead of trying to ride the coat tails of the Big 4. :p

I will also add a freebie point, just because I know it's hard for me to be objective about this band. 7/10.

3. Shinedown - I Dare You With Lyrics
According to the YouTube comments, this song was used for some wrestling show that I don't give a damn about. Hummm...not seeing it, except for the chorus, which is kick-ass good for wrestling (or anything else, for that matter). This is a solid alt-rock effort. My favorite of the 3 songs. 9/10.

My picks:
1. Wrapping up my PKTrekGirl's Obsession With Dreads Event, I have saved the best dreads for last :D : Lead singer could easily gain himself a place on my rock star fantasy bucket list, which hasn't accepted any new members in over a decade. I mean, Whoa BABY! Oh yeah...and he can sing too. :guffaw:

2. Recently started paying closer attention to these guys too, through a friend on Facebook who posts their videos:

3. These guys here and the band in #1 are so far the clear winners in my recent nuMetal viewing experiment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biJob6novWI&feature=related
More screamo than I'd like, but they are so otherwise PERFECT in every way, I find that I can deal with it.

^
Excellent choices! :bolian:

Yeah, Candlebox is one of those post-grunge bands...much like Bush who is one of my favs. :)

Shinedown is one of those bands that slip into the alt-metal/nu-metal category depending on the song.

Well, I'm a bit better with Bush than I am with Candlebox. In the case of Candlebox, being from Seattle actually kind of worked against them because they were sort of viewed as the Johnny Come Too Late To The Party band...whereas Bush at least had an excuse, being from the other side of the globe and all.

But in that video, they don't sound like they are trying to be a mini-me Pearl Jam or Alice In Chains. I really HATE it when bands do that (read: Creed! :p ) - especially when they think we are SO FUCKING STUPID that we will be unable to discern the truth when they try to tell us that their 'real influences' are any band OTHER than the one they sound EXACTLY LIKE.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

As for my choices, I have made some headway with those lists over the past few days.

LOVE: Disturbed, Ill Nino (these two are up there with Bullet, who I already really loved)

REALLY LIKE A LOT: Deftones, Nonpoint, Machinehead, Sevendust (wasn't on the lists, but whatever)

LIKE OKAY: Drowning Pool, Trapt (although these guys sound alt-rock to me, not nuMetal)

DISLIKE (mostly because they dress like shitheads and wear stupid-ass makeup that I hate): Static X, Coal Chamber, MudVayne

Still have several bands to go through...but those are the ones I've watched enough to make a decision.
