PSN down thread

Surprised there has not been a thread so far about the downtime the PSN has had over the past few days, even more annoying for me since I only had my PS3 for a week and my headset for 48 hours. I've been trying to keep up with the updates and it seems that Sony are rebuilding the entire infrastructure of the service, probably because of the recent attacks they suffered from hackers...

However but if that was the case, surly Sony would of given us a little heads up so I wonder if they were attacked again and decided hell with it lets do this massive upgrade. I hear PSN will be down until Thursday at the earliest though it could be another week still.

Anyone heard owt?

I thought about making a thread, but hadn't gotten around to it. But yeah, it is annoying. It's not affecting me too much since I'm not playing much this weekend and I don't play online much, but for some games like GT5 that have strong online components, it's annoying.

Has anyone else been able to watch Netflix through their PS3 since this started?

I tried and couldn't. Considering Netflix has it's OWN user ID, it's ridiculous that it's tied to PSN as well.

Yes I can watch Netflix when PSN is down. You just have to keep trying to sign in or whatever, then press the back button when it says you can't. It prompts me this way 2-8 times or so but Netflix loads in the background and when the PS3 stops trying to connect to PSN, Netflix works as usual.

I was surprised there was no thread either.

It's annoying. I don't do a lot of gaming but when I just want to get together online for an hour or two of fun with some friends and can't... bah.

At this point, my displeasure is directed equally at the hackers and Sony.

Yeah its annoying but i can understand them pulling the whole thing if its true why they did it, which seems to be related to the freetards once again using custom firmware to access the PSN, only this time they have managed to bypass the whole PSN store security and access it as Dev's and have been downloading any and everything since the beginning of April.

I really am getting sick of those who seem to think they are entitled to hack and disrupt any service in the name of getting a free launch.

What made me laugh was watching a video posted by Anonymous, after their hack a couple weeks ago, asking for the understanding of gamers and wanting people to stage protests against Sony.

Pissing off gamers around the globe isn't going to get you a lot of support.

I think this attack is a huge miscalculation on the part of the participants. Sony will spin this to put all the blame on the attackers, and that's where everyone will direct their ire. Whatever PR victory Anonymous might've hoped to achieve here has gone bye-bye.

Really, if people want to boycott Sony, the best thing to do is boycott Sony. You know, don't buy or use their products, and explain why.

A BBC news story has just confirmed it as a "Hacking attack".

PSN hacked

Sony has confirmed that a hacking attack was to blame for its PlayStation Network being taken offline.
The company said that it had taken the PSN down voluntarily while it investigated an "external intrusion".
The system is still unavailable five days after the hack was discovered.
Users trying to connect have been met with error messages stating that the network is "undergoing maintenance" or is "suspended".

The hackers should be hunted down :p Why can't we ever have a group of hackers who actually just go around hacking other hackers

As for SONY, their security is not great it seems as I can't remember LIVE facing such damage from hacking attempts and I am sure people have tried.

So, last I heard, they're redoing the network infrastructure due to the attack, which would explain why it's down for so long, with no idea of when it will be back up.

I heard that Japan could get some of it back up within 24 hours and Europe/North America 24 hours after that. But the entire service could be a while longer, I assume the first thing they want back up is ability to play online games.

I feel that the ugly part of this whole story is the possible, if not likely scenario of a massive data theft in terms of account and payment information during the attack.

That could be an issue, if which SONY needs to come clear infact by law don't they have to tell us of such a breach? I am just happy I never gave Sony any Credit Card information.

Yeah, Sony would have to publicize the extent of the breach and contact any customers potentially affected by it--at least under US law, not sure about other jurisdictions.

I haven't even noticed, and I think I've played my PS3 every night for the last week.

Not really an online gamer.

I don't really care why its down now, at this stage i would rather they take the time and make its secure so that it cant happen again in the future.....but apart from accessing the store and Home I'm not really worried about online because i had moved away from multiplayer games, but i was enjoying the coop online ones like borderlands, RE5, lost planet 2 and LBP2.
