Bryan Singer: Why 'Superman Returns' Didn't Work

I kinda got the impression from the extras and interviews that Singer hired Routh because he was hot for him.

Not that there's anything wrong widdat.

To be fair, it could be argued that's why any movie-maker picks his cast.

Best thing is when an actor turns writer and director and essentially writes intense sex scenes with hot actresses for himself.

I always figured that's why there was a sex scene in Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet". Dude just wanted a piece of Kate Winslet.

I didn't want to comment on this thread because we all know why Superman Returns failed. It was motherfucking BORING that's why.
But I had to comment about the quote above: are we as people walking on eggshells all the freakin' time because gays exist? So if a gay man (Singer) made a boring-ass film (S:R) and we criticize the movie for that reason alone and say Singer fucked it up, its labellled as concealed low-key gay bashing?

Really? :cardie:

That might also explain why, in Titanic, it's Cameron himself, and not Leonard DiCaprio, whose hands you see sketching naked Winslet. ;)

Poor Winslet, surrounded by a bunch of perverts.:rommie:

It's possible to make a comment about a gay person without it being gay-bashing.

Not in our overly sensitive PC-ridden times. Everything, And I mean EVERY DAMN THING up to and including saying "Hello" to somebody MUST be considered an insult, or trampling on somebody's rights, or some other damned thing....

Excuse me, I gotta go take a pill and lie down.....

Ahh, Kate Winslet naked in Titanic, that scene turned me into a man that night. Damn near flawless beauty to absolute perfection in that scene.

But, IIRC, cameron did the sketch in that scene because, well, he could draw and Cappy couldn't. It is odd though when you watch and notice how well aged Jack's hands are. ;)

Gay here, and don't subscribe to this comment.

If we can say A straight Director cast someone because they wanted them, we can certainly say a Gay man might do the same thing. If X-Men hadn't been cast for Hotness, would it have been a better movie? Sure, Storm wasn't really right, but I enjoyed everyone else (Disclaimer: Not a Comic Afficianado, so couldn't comment on trueness to character in the books)

Funny how the one scene in the film that didn't use special effects just happened to be the scene that required Cameron to spend hours starting at Kate Winslet's naked body... I'm just saying.

Cameron is a wily bastard. ;)

I think the most basic problem with Superman Returns is that it's a bit too melancholy. Singer's work has a dark streak to it, which is fine, but it's not appropriate to the Superman character.

Good observation.

It's also difficult to sustain that mood - basically one of memory and loss - in a story about a group of vital young people who are living successful lives. Singer's melancholy take is based in looking back at a certain story twenty years later and projecting forward from it, but what we're presented with on screen doesn't reflect these characters a generation or even a decade later in their lives. This young guy's girlfriend grew up, moved on and he's moping. Eh.

Yep, but your speculation about Singer and Routh didn't prove it.

It's possible to make a comment about something a gay person may have done due to their being gay, without intending to bash that person's gayness, or bash ALL gay people because they're gay. My admittedly snarky comment was directed only at Singer himself, because of something he himself personally may or may not have done. Said comment, in fact, is something a gay friend said to me after viewing the same DVD extra. I might say the same thing about, say, Joss Whedon for casting Eliza Dushku after hearing the way he sometimes moons over her in interviews. I would, of course, leave off the Seinfeld gag.

Lordy, the PC oversensitivity sometimes feels like witchhunt mentality.

Conveniently forgetting about the other comment that Singer couldn't direct a compelling romance between Lois and Superman because he's gay, but yeah.
