How much of the first book, percentage-wise, did this cover?
"The things I do for love" happens at about 10% of the book. Of course, some scenes were removed or replaced with new ones not in the book.

Looks like ratings are in.

Early Ratings: Game of Thrones Is No Boardwalk Empire

So HBO won't release official ratings for last night's brilliantly hyped premiere of Game of Thrones until tomorrow. But one early indicator suggests that the numbers probably won't break any records. Don't panic, GoT groupies: The good news is, HBO doesn't live or die by Nielsen's verdict, and we're about 98.5 percent certain that the network will green-light a second season of the epic fantasy. That said, let's look at what the first returns from Nielsen show.

According to data obtained by Vulture, GoT earned a 1.6 rating in Nielsen's overnight household sample. By way of comparison, last September's debut of Boardwalk Empire on HBO averaged a 2.8 rating in the overnights. Household ratings aren't used much anymore, with most networks tending to look at overall viewership or demographic averages to gauge a program's success. What's more, because of HBO's smaller distribution — it's in about 28 million homes — household overnight ratings can vary substantially from the national total viewer figure. All of these caveats aside, down is down: Based on this snapshot of its performance, it's clear GoT won't come close to matching the nearly 5 million viewers who watched the Boardwalk Empire premiere in September.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

Another thing, the whole history/geography of this world is a pretty straight-up rehash of Britain's, isn't it? Aside from the fact that Westeros is a "continent", not an island. I mean, there's a Hadrian's wall of sorts, separating the civilized to the south from the "Wildling" Scotsmen to the north. There was an Angle (Andal) invasion some time in the past. And the Albino king in exile is representative of the Normans.
Yeah, Westeros' physical resemblance to Britain really isn't coincidental. A lot of the story that happens in the first three books is also inspired by British history, particularly the Wars of the Roses. The Wall wasn't built to keep the Wildlings out, however, but something far, far worse.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound good ... The hype was enormous and the promotion was crazy, but somehow id didn't translate into huge ratings.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

Yeah. I guess we'll just have to hope it grows in the ratings as it goes along.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

HBO has several different ways to catch the show. They aired the premiere three times in a row. Then ya have HBO West, which also aired the premiere three times in a row a few hours later. HBO on Demand has the premiere available now. And ya have other repeats (or "encore presentations") durin' the week 'til the next new episode.

Unlike say, a show on FOX, where if ya miss the initial airin', ya ain't goin' to see that episode again 'til the DVD release...

One positive thing about the series is that it's HBO's bestselling series overseas, surpassing everything they had before. So hopefully it'll be able to compensate for not so stellar ratings in the renewal decision.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

As others have pointed out, HBO doesn't exist on commercial sales, which is the only thing ratings are worth a damn for. They're merely a gauge to help them decide if they want to continue with a show because its drawing in subscribers. Critical acclaim, buzz, and overall popularity is just as important to them if not moreso than ratings are simply because it helps draw in those subscribers. Or in other words, those subscribers don't have to watch that particular show to keep that show on the air.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

Watched it again today, this time with my parents, and I enjoyed it a little more this time around. My dad read the first three books about 8 years ago (was before AFFC was out) so he had some familiarity with what was going on. My mom's new to it and not into SF/F at all, was very squeamish during the prologue (she's pathetic around gore ) but seemed to enjoy the rest of it a little bit more and was asking questions about stuff, so that's a good sign. She's generally liked all the other HBO shows we've watched, so here's hoping for another convert! :)

For a show that was supposedly expensive to make, did it come of as cheap to anyone else? Maybe they're just not spending their money right. Khal Drogo's wedding wasn't by the ocean in the book right? In fact don't the Dothraki mistrust and dislike the ocean anyways?

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

HBO probably expected higher ratings, considering the large fanbase from the books. Did readers of the book just not know that the show was airing? I think ratings do play a part on how long a show lasts. HBO did cancel shows like Deadwood, Carnivale, and ROME.

I think every fan of the books who had an internet connection knew about the show. It was very difficult to miss, if you went online and, let's say, went to Wikipedia to find out something about the books.

HBO cancelled shows, but Carnivale and Rome had 2 seasons and Deadwood had 3.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

We'll see what happens. True Blood initial rating was considered a disappointment but improved as the week went on.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

In short, I don't think we have to worry about the second season. We do might worry about the renewal beyond that, if the ratings stay the same and the DVD sales + international rights are lower than expected.
And having just 2 seasons would suck, because the third book has the highest amount of WTF?!? scenes that would look killer on screen.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

This is one of the most boring pilots I have seen in years. If this was on network TV all the reviews would be negative and it would be canceled after 3 episodes.

Camelot sucks, but at least I can watch it without feeling extremely drowsy. Very, very disappointed.

What the hell?!?

:wtf:

Methinks somebody was expecting wizards with lightning shooting from their staffs, dragons and magic.

Next!

Why do people keep calling this episode a pilot? It's the first episode - it's not like HBO is going to cancel the other 9 if this fails. As for slow... I guess I didn't see that. It's character, setting, and plot establishment and development. It's pretty standard for most HBO shows to be heavy on those things before getting to the meat of the story. Hell, that's standard for most good storytelling period. It's act 1 of the 3 act structure.

I am actually starting to think we should talk about moving in together!

;)

One addition I didn't like was that scene with Cersei and Jaime in King's Landing. I think it was unnecessary and the big mystery of AGOT is going to be incredibly easy for even the most casual of viewers to figure out, now.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

That's some horrible ratings. The new season of Power Rangers is almost double that. With all the promotion and the huge budget of the series this is not a good sign.

 No, no more roommates - I'm done with that ;)

Keep in mind that the vast majority of people don't subscribe to HBO and Nielsen ratings don't matter in any way for HBO. DVD sales are king for HBO shows.

My prediction is that we'll see A Clash of Kings and no further. I'd be happy with just Game of Thrones if that's what it comes to. If nothing else, at least one of the novels got adapted.
