This will be as successful as the sword of truth series and just as accurate.... I thank god that I have never read or listened to the books so I will not be as disappointed as I was with the difference between the screen play and the books.

Actually it's a very accurate adaptation so far.

As another person who hasn't read the books (they've been on my reading list for a long time, I'll get to them eventually...) I quite enjoyed the first episode. I did find it somewhat confusing though not in a "I don't understand what's happening" sort of way and more of a "there's a lot of stuff going on and it will take a few episodes to get a handle on it" kind of way. Definitely looking forward to more.

Personally, just seeing any sort of fantasy on TV with these production values is already a win for me.

I agree, I'm actually pretty pleased with the adaptation so far. Not everything is perfect, and I never expected it to be, but so far it's definitely closer than I was expecting.

Glad to hear that Season Two has already been greenlit. I really hope the ratings build and GoT becomes a success. I don't expect it to be a success on the level of True Blood, but it would be great to see it succeed and last for several seasons.

Of the characters we've seen thus far, I think I'd have to go with Tyrion as my favorite. He's one of my favorites in the books, but Peter Dinklage's performance (at least so far) is almost perfect. I loved the scene with him and Jaime in the whorehouse. I really felt the camaraderie and brotherly love between the two of them there; which is good to see, because Jaime was always the only member of Tyrion's immediate family who ever treated him kindly.

The DVD and Bluray release won't happen until Thanksgiving/X-mas at the earliest. HBO usually releases a season on disc only two or three months before the next season starts.

that would be awesome. I don't have HBO. so I'll have to wait damn it, damn it, damn it.

James Hibberd has updated his story with the following news:

Also, and this is important, in the UK the premiere did really well — Thrones set a Sky Atlantic ratings record with 750,000 viewers, beating the previous record holder, which was … Boardwalk Empire.

A minor point that might not be apparent to non-UK readers: Sky Atlantic was only launched maybe two months ago, so it's not exactly a long-standing record that's been beaten... But that is a good figure for a UK satellite channel, about equal with the best Galactica got on Sky One.

Good to see it renewed. But the ratings need to stay up if the producers want it to last longer than two seasons. True Blood was fortunate enough to be released just before the vampire craze, the one Twilight movies started.

GoT's huge cast and complex storylines will have a harder time finding an audience.

I watched it again and I think the pilot must have been longer originally. Most of the issues I had with the clunkyness of the dialog seemed to be because they've removed dramatic pauses and had people respond almost instantly to cut time or where they added off screen voice overs to combine scenes. Hopefully once things are a little more settled the show will be able to take time.

More ratings news from TV by the Numbers: The Monday night repeats drew 1.2 million viewers.

It's good that it's doing awesome overseas.

It's also good that HBO will constantly offer reruns of each episode. This will help newcomers catch up and compensate for the complex storyline.

Or maybe you could subscribe to HBO, 'cause, ya know, it's kind of the point...

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

GoT will be on for what, two and a half months? It's $10 per month for HBO, so you'd end up paying for three months. Just cancel it right after that. It's cheaper than paying $60 or more on the DVDs. ;)

That's a very important factor. Since HBO isn't advertiser supported they're free to renew shows if the overall revenues - such as from international sales and DVD/Blu-ray sales - are strong, even if the US ratings are only middle of the road.

It's also good that HBO will constantly offer reruns of each episode. This will help newcomers catch up and compensate for the complex storyline.
And in addition to the reruns, HBO subscribers have access to HBO on Demand where they can watch episodes at any time they choose. A lot of subscribers use it - for example, three times more people watched the first part of Mildred Pierce on HBO on Demand than watched its initial airing.

A minor point that might not be apparent to non-UK readers: Sky Atlantic was only launched maybe two months ago, so it's not exactly a long-standing record that's been beaten... But that is a good figure for a UK satellite channel, about equal with the best Galactica got on Sky One.
Sky Atlantic is a very new channel, but Game of Thrones scored excellent numbers by Sky standards. From the Wertzone:

Battlestar Galactica typically got 100-200,000 viewers on the far better-known and more-established Sky One and was counted as a success. Also on Sky One, Lost got about 400,000, rising to 600,000 for the finale, and was counted as a big hit for them. Boardwalk Empire got 400,000 when it debuted as Sky Atlantic's flagship show in February (dropping down to 200,000 within two weeks) and was counted as a success.

So all of these factors mean that Game of Thrones getting 743,000 viewers for its first hour has sent Sky representatives into paroxysms of happiness on Twitter. This is a huge and unexpected success. I expect to see a big drop-off for the second week, as that always happens plus it's a holiday weekend, but even so this bodes well for Sky's future coverage and sticking with the programme.

Edit to add: the second season, like the first season, will have 10 episodes. Two of HBO's head honchos spoke to James Hibberd about the second season order, the show's ratings and the first season DVD release:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What made you decide to renew Thrones?
MICHAEL LOMBARDO: It’s a great show that only gets better with every episode, and when it ends you’re left wanting more. On a creative level, it was screaming for another season. We absolutely had an expectation that this would be a slow [ratings] build. It’s challenging for people who’ve decided it’s not a genre for them. The word of mouth has been great and we don’t even have OnDemand numbers yet. We thought it was a great starting place.
RICHARD PLEPLER: It’s a quintessential HBO show — it has a passionate connection with a big part of our audience. Whether the final number is 7 or 8 million viewers, it doesn’t take anything away from the addictive quality of the show for a large chunk of our audience.
How many episodes is the second season?
ML: It’s such a challenging show to produce. They don’t have a writing staff — it’s just the two of them [exec producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss]. The idea is to do ten of them again, and that’s what they want to do, to maintain the quality of their work.
When will season two premiere?
ML: We don’t want people to wait more than a year. This is a production challenge. You have to start every season anew [adding more locations].
RP: Same time, next year.
When will production start?
ML: The producers are scouting locations for second season now. That’s all to be discussed.
When is the first season DVD being released?
RP: Generally, it becomes available immediately before, or immediately after, the second season starts — but we haven’t had those conversations yet. And with the advent of HBO Go, people will be able to watch this when they want, how they want.
If Thrones ratings stay right where they are now, are you happy?
RP: Yes, absolutely. With the VOD and multiplex, we’re going to get substantially over 6 million [viewers]. True Blood‘s numbers were nowhere near that [the first season]. It’s a strong show for us. The best thing we have going for us is word of mouth, that’s the biggest driver you can get. The Twitter action this morning is tremendous. This is only going to build.
