Bryan Singer: Why 'Superman Returns' Didn't Work

Eh, I thought it was pretty good. I agree Bosworth was a weak link but I don't think she torpedoed the whole outing or anything. It's not a masterpiece but if you go back and watch some of the Reeve movies without your childhood blinders on, it's at least as good as those ones. Maybe a little better.

Superman Returns is a decent movie. As a longtime fan of Christopher Reeve's Superman, I think Routh's performance was pitch perfect. I think he really deserves another shot at the role, and I hope there is another Superman movie in the near future.

I honestly don't get the accolades Routh receives for Returns. His performance was rarely anything other than one-note. There was virtually no difference between his Clark Kent and Superman personas (which only exacerbated the silly notion that no one in the film made the connection between the sudden return of both Superman and Kent at the exact same time -- after both disappearing at the exact same time). Other than looking the part, he did almost nothing else.

Call him Supermannequin.

^Um. There is another Superman movie coming out but sadly it won't have Routh. Haven't you heard?

No, I didn't know. I haven't had my ear to the ground on upcoming movies for some time now. I'll have to check this out (thanks for the heads up!).

^ No problem. There's a thread in this forum discussing it

But if you don't want to wade through 70 pages or so, the gist of it is Zack Snyder directing, Chris Nolan producing/ supervising (with script input), Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois, Michael Shannon as Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent. That's about all that's known for now.

I personally loved the boat rescue moment. I thought it was iconic in every way...the way it was shot, the music, Routh's performance. Love it.

I think if they had a different actress playing Lois, got rid of the kid and re-wrote the so-called "stalker" angle a bit, I think the movie would have been great as is. People might still complain about the lack of action a bit, but I think it would have been much more loved.
I totally forgot about the boat rescue, but yes, that was well done, I agree.

And yeah, I agree if those changes had been made the movie may have been more well regarded.

Thanks. Yeah, I checked out a few articles and I will say I'm hopeful, but very disappointed Routh won't be given another chance. I really liked his portrayal of Superman. Of course, being a fan of Christopher Reeve's portrayal (one I consider to be the best representation ever), I never thought I'd think of anyone else as Superman. Routh made real inroads into that long held belief. Maybe this new guy can do the same.

hmm kind of wonder how a Lucas/Speilberg made Superman movie would have turned out.
And just imagine if they had used John Williams to do the score, too!

:p
Honestly, though the Spielberg who directed KOTCS was not at all fit for that project, he might well have made a darn good Superman. At least we wouldn't have gotten a soggy, mopey, charm-free movie. KOTCS sucks, but it does have charm.

I rather enjoy KOTCS. Of course, that may be due to nostalgia, in that I really wanted to see Indy and Marion together again onscreen.

Well I didnt mean present-ish Spielberg, but Spielberg back then. Post Close Encounters/ Pre-E.T. Spielberg, the movies he had made around that time were 1941 and Raiders of the Lost Ark. So if Donner had never done any of the Superman films and went straight from The Omen to Inside Moves or The Toy and Spielberg had done it instead. How would they have turned out? It's a "Joe Washington what if ultimate scenario!" :)

I was just excited to see Superman done with modern special effects. I'm not hard to please most of the times.

Yeah, in Donner's defense, the tech for a full-on live-action Supes movie didn't yet exist. At least we got Raiders when we did, and for posterity, which I like better than all the Supes movies put together.

what is the point this poster is trying to illustrate?

But it wasn't a sequel either.

The lifted lines from the Donner movies just made the event very Earth 2.

Plus the fact that those lines were badly quoted, and dropped in at inappropriate times.

And that doesn't even begin to address that Kate Bostwick was miscast, or Brandon Routh being hired NOT to play Superman but instead doing a Christopher Reeve impression.

Let's hope this new movie does a better job.

I think the opinion is universal that, while SR may have had flaws, it's still infinitely better than The Quest for Peace!

Alex

In no way, shape, or form, will I ever agree with that.

Quest For Peace was hardly the best Superman film, but it was light years ahead of Returns.
