I used to make a game of taking a picture every time I found someone who thought they were playing James Cameron's Star Trek Online... ;)

You got to admit, those are pretty good Avatar impressions. Makes you wonder if the people who designed the alien parts for it made where fans and designed it kind of deliberate. ;)
It's hilarious that you can make better Avatars or even Minbari then a Jem'Hadar (at least as a playable character or Boff).

Meet the Exeter, an Aegis-equipped Majestic-class assault cruiser. Here she is in orbit of Vulcan:

Gotta love reactive shields.

Since I made Vice Admiral on my last regular Fed toon I completed my generational uniform theme with a variation of the All Good Things future uniforms.

WOW, I SOOOOOO need to get a new graphics card. I'm running this on low settings because my card is crap. The graphics I'm getting look like a game from 5-10 years ago. They're more then good enough (I've never been overly concerned with graphics, it's all about story and gameplay with me), but I have to admit, the game looks pretty sweet the way it was intended to be seen.

It is indeed a beautiful game. Well worth upgrading for IMO.

But you don't need a good graphics card to enjoy moments like this. My Klingon alt, partying with old man Worf on Forcas III.

If I buy this for my computer

Diamond ATI Radeon HD 3450 PCI Express 512MB GDDR2 Video Card

will that run the game the way it was intended?

I picked up a SAPPHIRE 100253HDMI Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Low Profile Ready Video Card back in February, and you can see how it looks by some of my screenshots. Before that, I just used the basic Intel HD Graphics chip that came with my computer. The graphics weren't that great (no shadows, reflects, anti-aliasing, etc) but the game was playable. Since I upgraded, I've noticed a huge difference in the quality of the graphics.

I would imagine that the card you specified should allow you to play the game they way it was intended. It's far better than the onboard graphics chip.

I run an ATI HD5870 2GB so perhaps that's a bit overkill for STO.

I'm not sure if the 3450 will run it at max, Fremen, but it's up to you if you want that or just a big improvement on what you've got.

Some one might be able to shed more light on this, but I'm sure I read somewhere that STO isn't that great with ATI cards. Mine runs just fine mind you, a bit hot maybe.

Perhaps take a look at some Nvidia cards for running STO instead.

EDIT: just googled STO ATI cards and it looks like the problem for some was with dynamic lighting, which has apparently just been fixed by ATI in their latest patch, so I think you're good to go with whatever card you select.

You might have half resolution enabled. If so, disable it, and your graphics will improve dramatically. (And if you have a card that meets the minimum specs y9ou should still get a decent framerate with everything else at low.

Been finally spending time leveling up my Klingon alt, Kurot. Here he is on Qo'Nos after making lieutenant commander. Gave him a bit of a makeover to make him look more like your typical Klingon without being either too generic or too over the top:

The eyepatch adds character.
