I didn't know that digital copies expired!!!

But if you already bought the movie then even if you do get "caught" you own the lisence of the movie anyways, it's just no longer on a disc.

This whole bullshit is why I think disc aren't going anywhere. The damn companies can't take the disc you bought away.

They can send people into your house and erase the information on the disk.

Very Merchant of Venice?

We're not quite there yet you say?

In my country, you are only allowed to use a video recorder for the purpose of time shifting. You can watch recorded TV once. If it can be proven that you have watched a show more than once, or still own the recorded TV after multiple viewings, you might or might not be fined a monumental amount of money if they can be bothered but "they" will electomagnetically blank all your vhs tapes for realz.

It's the law.

Regarding the legality of downloading / ripping the movie, my response is don't be such a wuss.

In the U.S. it's a felony, which is a huge fine and possible prison time if they catch you.

Because the movie industry, while obscenely influential in Washington, is eons behind the times, and so is IP law, which simply isn't applicable to modern methods of dissemination. As a result, people automatically associate bittorrents with piracy, when in fact the industry should embrace this technology.

Well, hell, they opposed VCRs, too.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Digital copies also only work on the one computer you activate them on. So along with them expiring, they can cram it with walnuts.
Don't know about you but my digital copies seem to work with any computer authorized by my iTunes account.

My experience is only with the digital downloads that "come with" a DVD or BD, like STXI, which only worked on one computer and now doesn't work at all.

Luckily I just made a 14GB HD .avi from the BD I just bought, which is light years better looking than their damn digital copy.

If I buy the movie on DVD, I'll do whatever I damn well please with it. Including ripping it to .avi if I need to, to watch it on my own personal computer.

In this case, the law is just wrong. Another way for The Man to stick it to the little guy over and over and over again. If I buy a DVD, I ought to be able to use that DVD for my own personal use any way I damn well please. And it's none of their business if I rip it to .avi to watch on my own computer.

Seriously - the more we are willing to give these people, the more they will try to take. These greedy SOBs will take as much of our money as they can get, with no regard whatever for what is fair and right.

Piracy is one thing. But buying a DVD fair and square and not being allowed to rip it to avi for personal use is just bullshit and ought to be opposed...via 'peaceful protest' if so inclined. Just my 2 cents.

If they had their way, you'd be paying for every time you watched your DVD or pressed the button on your DVR to watch a TV episode.

Isn't that pretty much the idea of content streaming services like Netflix and Amazon? The world is indeed moving in that direction since more and more content are being hosted and presented as web-only.

Also, not only have I had digital copies that expire, I have seen those one time viewing DVDs. Somehow, the die on the DVD will degrade so fast that it basically becomes a coaster in about 48 hours time. Ain't that some shit.

The digital copies do not expire, only the codes that can be used to download them (they are limited time promotional offers, say the movie companies). I've had some I didn't use soon enough and now they don't work anymore. It's up to the studio to disable them though, and I had some that said they were expired but still worked. Warner Bros. seems to tbe the worst for enforcing their expiry dates. :p

All the digital copies I have are licences through iTunes, and work on anything that is tied to my iTunes account (so up to 5 computers I think).

You’re right, it’s the code that expired. But I didn’t know that codes expire, and it’s not on the exterior packaging of most combo packs.

.
As are mine, I have a couple of Disney DVDs that came with Digital Copies on separate discs. All I have to do is copy them from one computer to another and as long as the computer is authorized by my iTunes account it plays. I can even put them on multiple iPods. Perhaps your trying to copy them from the discs which are a one time affair? There's no law against backing up your Digital Copy, that includes to another computer.

A few minutes go, I posted a comment to the Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 thread in which I defended the studios against "screwing the customer" by releasing so-called "double-dips".

My points however do not apply to "digital copies" which are a waste of resources, and I resent having to pay extra for a "combo pack" that includes something I'll never use. Thankfully most releases at least include the digital copy on the DVD with the standard-def version of the film. But I've got plenty of sets with another disc containing just the digital copy, which will never be used.

The whole idea of including a digital copy is to combat pirating and downloading. Yet then they put an expiry date on the thing? Senseless. (The semantics regarding "activation codes" don't matter. Plus, what if I don't want to use iTunes? I personally find those players suck - I use a piece of freeware called VLC that plays digital files and DVDs better than the software provided on my Mac.)

I just hope the morons who came up with that idea don't decide to put expiry dates on the regular Blu-rays or DVDs. I recall Disney tried releasing DVDs that somehow erased themselves after being played more than a few times, and that failed.
