Well, if they're signed on as Secondaries to begin with I don't what the problem is.

Of course, I've never been of a mind that big casts are really a good thing to begin with. I've always preferred mine to be about 5 centrals, myself.

I thought the size of the cast was fine, and when they got rid of the dead weight of Kes for 7 the cast became more dynamic becasue the possibilities opened up. But Chuckles decided to sleep walk and Kim was never that ineresting to begin with. But I think changing more than one character would have been a disaster. I like the way the series turned out in spite of Kim and Chuckles

I did stop watching the show when my favorite characters were dumped for reasons I couldn't accept. If they had started wasting more main characters early on, then I would have stopped watching it very soon.

the constant wasting of main characters who I've learned to like from the start and replaced them with no-nos who I don't care about at all.

Unfortunately, I think this sums up why you can't kill off or swap out many characters in Trek.

Many viewers don't always accept change or having characters removed because the average Trek fan does get attached emotionally to them. From grown adults writing hate mail to Wil Wheton too harping on the loss of Kes several years later. Just look at the ratings of other shows that change cast members. "Law & Order" & "ER" took a dip in their ratings everytime a cast member switched. While they survived, it's takes the audience too long to adjust to change or even like it.

Besides, there is no guarentee that the characters replacing others would be better.
What if they replaced Chakotay and the actor or character was worse?

I didn't find any of the ENT cast bad, just forgettably bland. Which is the same problem I had with the writing. At least Threshold was memorable; I usually forgot what Enterprise episodes were about by the time next week's preview came on.

Can't see quite point of criticising ENT cast in a VOY thread (where possible/probable no-one will defend). But you guys are so...forceful and dogmatic. Wow, I'm just weak in the presence of your intellectual genius

We compare and contrast Voy. to TOS, TNG, DS9 & ENT. all the time.
This isn't any different.

I thought Blalock was awful. Bakula often seemed uncomfortable, but I think that was more the character than the actor, because I've seen him in other stuff where he's really good.

I don't see how one could make a judgment one way or the other on Montgomery considering the lack of opportunity he got.

I agree with what some others have said, that it was largely the writing that was the problem. An actor is confined by what is written, and further by the direction. Now, if the writing and direction is great, but the actor comes off wooden, it's the actor's fault.

I wasn't that crazy about Wang, but I felt he did OK. Beltran was having quite some difficulty with the producers, as it is well known, and this may have influenced his performance to some degree. He did have moments where he shined. And because of those, I think he had the potential for more... but again, was stifled by the writing and the direction.
