Roberto Orci Offers Star Trek 2 Update

I don't care what they use for Engineering.

What if engineering were the inside of a restroom at Red Lobster? And you hit the button on the hand dryer to start the warp engines?

I bet you'd care.

I don't know. That would be simpler and more convenient.

I prefer the Engineering room to take place at a McDonald's Playpin but that's just me.

flawless movie.

The engine room did remind me of the USNS Comfort engine room.:

And the Trident tube section on HMS Vanguard:

Except that these two seem more advanced than the Brewery, or at least as advanced. I dont mind a new look for Engineering, but I wasnt all that thrilled with what we got. But I can live with a very industrial look.

From the sounds of it though, this movie is damned if it does or damned if it doesn't. I think it's never going to get the respect from a lot of die hard Trek fans because it's not their Trek.

I enjoyed it because I wasn't looking at the movie as " This is Kirk, Spock and the Gang ". I looked at it as " This is a new vision, a new look, a new interpretation ". That's why I'm not ripping it apart so much, that's why I don't try over analyze the movie. It's not TOS Trek and so I can't come into that movie with that mind set. It is its own movie with it's own story and these characters will have their own adventures.

I can only judge and rip apart the movie for itself. If this movie was set in the TOS timeline and this was the Kirk, Spock, and gang that I know and love -- of course I would rip the movie apart and tell the writers to go to hell. But they avoided that by building their own universe... and I really got to give them the credit for taking into consideration of ways to avoid pissing off this fandom.

I'll be honest, Star Trek 2009 was the most anticipated movie of my life and I was 37 at the time. It was a film I desperately wanted to love... but the script just asks the viewer to make too many leaps of logic to keep me in that world.

While I thought the ship designs were a bit lackluster, I never held it against the film. I thought all the actors fit the roles with the exception of Pegg and Saldana and I thought Abrams did a good job directing the story he had.

But the story was just off.

Personally I liked everything about it and I still do. But whatever.

The first thing that grabbed me about the engine room was the idea that the entire secondary hull of the ship is just that: SECONDARY. Nobody lives there, no labs, no botanical garden, maybe some offices and workspaces, but for all intents and purposes it's pretty much a pressurized service module where shuttles, cargo, machinery and fuel are all stored. It didn't look like a brewery to me (primarily because, like everyone else here pretends otherwise, I have no idea what a brewery actually looks like), it seemed to me like the interior engine block of the space shuttle, enlarged five thousand times and with some catwalks woven through it.

If they're going to do a purpose-built engineering set, I would want them to emulate the same look as this film, though a larger number of control panels and monitors/dials/indicators wouldn't be missed. Perhaps something that looks like the TOS engine room would if you tore down all the walls, took out the chainlink fence and left that engine core siting naked and exposed in the middle of the deck.

Maybe they really were cancelled for fear of clashing with the next film.

They were postponed. Put on hiatus. No way will Pocket let four paid-out contracts go to waste, even if the novels need a little tweaking later.

Bad Robot wants to have first, second (and third?) bites of the new cherry before the tie-in novelists. I see no problem with that. There's no "fear" involved. The books would have clashed in some way and delaying them means that they can eventually be tweaked so they don't clash.

Has Greg confirmed this? meaning, Greg Cox? From what I remember, his was one of the novels.

It's good to know that Bob Orci genuinely cares about the interests of the fans.

But then, he's been there for us for the first one, too, to be frank. I personally LOVED Trek XI--and this is a Canon Purist speaking, who understands and approves of the alternate timeline.

Personally? I don't complain about the Beer Factory Engineering. I mean...the TOS Engineering had pipes and valves, for goodness sake!

However, I could go for Scotty overseeing an upgrade of the chamber, so it keeps the "down-to-earth" element, but looks more "in line" with the high-tech nature of Trek.

As for Kirk...I would say he's pretty much earned his captaincy, having saved the whole freaking FEDERATION from certain destruction by taking command and taking charge!

However...that being said...I would enjoy some more "earning" for Kirk--showing him prove his worth.

And...Yelchin should tone down his accent a bit--make it sound more subtle, more "natural". I'm sure it's supposed to be more "authentic" than Koenig's...but to be blunt--it sounds goofy, exaggerated, parody-ish. Chekov's supposed to be funny, yes--but not a clown. And that's what he sounds like in Trek XI, I'm sorry.

Show us more Sulu! The coolness factor was there--especially with the swordfight. So...more swordplay!

And PLEASE, Bob--if you're reading this--PLEASE give us Yeoman Janice Rand! And if it's not too much trouble...have her and Kirk help each other out in their emotional conflicts, and give us the romantic relationship between the two that always should have been....

Gotta say... WORD for every word. I like the Rand/Kirk thing but it shouldn't be an out an out "affair". It should be more of a slow burn... a "hidden tendre" with UST. I'd love some glances between them (think of Miri). They need to find someone to play Rand who has out-of-this-world chemistry with Pine. But no lameass, stupid romantic stuff and dialogue. That's NOT the way to go. We've got enough of the cornball romance going with Uhura and Spock. Please, no more of that. I want Kirk to THINK he's free to date and be the ladies man he was in the original series but (unlike in the original series) I want TPTB to hint at more going on beneath the surface (in terms of emotional reverberance) between the two.

Most of all, if they do a Kirk/Rand, I want them to take their time over the series of movies instead of one movie. And please, if they do it, don't DARE mess it up!! I've had enough bad romance in Trek to last me a lifetime!! :( :scream::p

I also want Chekhov to have the Beatles/Monkees haircut!! Sue me but I like it that way. I want my floppy Chekhov. He was adorable :)

Nope. It's all speculation. None of the authors know for sure what's gonna happen with their post-STXI novels.

Well it did look like a brewery to me, but many breweries actually do resemble many engine rooms, at least superficially. Its not as if in looking like a brewery it therefore looks nothing like an engine room. I think alot of people are used to the sort of engine room we've seen since TMP. And when they think the brewery doesnt look like engineering, they mean it doesnt look like the TMP to VOY type engineering sections, not that it doesnt have a basic general similarity to the overall look and feel of real world engineering sections on modern ships.

For myself, I dont mind the industrial look but thats not to say that I was all that thrilled with what we got. We will see how it looks next time out.

Well--at least smooth out his hair. Somehow, a curly-haired Chekov just doesn't appeal to me....

Lol - well if Chekov has to look like a Monkee then Janice needs her massive beehive. I'm not sure either would work given the demands of modern stuntwork... unless they CGI them? ;)

I think Janice would work really well as Kirk's yeoman plotwise because she doesn't need much of an excuse to accompany him on the ship or on landing parties. She's their best hope of an updated modern action heroine while still harking back to TOS. Any unrequieted lust should just be frosting on that cake in my view.

According to this, Bob's playing down the rumours that a TOS season one villain will resurface while hinting again that the baddie might not be a person at all but some force of nature.

Are they going to be saving penguins? lol

" We need to save the penguins or this probe will destroy planet earttttth "

Harcourt Fenton Mudd? I would be curious how NuTrek would cast an portray him, but I can't see him carrying a movie as the main villain. He's a foil, not really a villain.

Let's see.. going down series one for TOS...

Trelane is more likely, but, again, is that a movie plot? We also know who and what he is, which would ruin the motivation and 'twist'.

Khan... please God no. It would be a huge mistake for NuTrek II to set itself up for a direct comparison to Star Trek's ultimate high-point (we're talking franchise-killer here). Khan is definitely a true-villain, but, just.. no.

Kor would be a good choice and could introduce the NuKlingons. Kor is a ruthless but "lawful" Klingon lord, and would be a very challenging villain for the largely-untried NuKirk to be put up against.

Sadly... I expect it will be Khan.

Why can't they make their own damn (new) villain?!

Because there will be 12532992025 other fanboys online bitching about the fact that there was no Harry Mudd in it. Or Klingons. Or complain about how the new original villain fails in comparison to the villains from TOS.

This fandom is so fickle, my lord.

Nah, I think most fanboys want something new with some nods to TOS such as Harry Mudd selling wives with a BOGOF deal in the background of an Orion space hub or a salt vampire on Rura Penthe.

Having said that, I wouldn't class a klingon or romulan antagonist as a TOS rip off if the villain him or herself is new. I'd be quite keen on seeing Kang, Kor, or Koloth get a cameo too since they rather respected Kirk.

But... that would require a spark of originality!

Leave TOS alone.
It's there's to have their wicked way with now.

Pretty much expect to see Kirk riding on the back of a Planet Killer, waving his ten-gallon hat about and going "Yippie-kay-ay, Mother Vulcans!"
