Any Plans for a "Reboot" or New Series?

Are there any plans from the powers that be for a new TV series?

Or are they going to just sit on this franchise and put out a movie (ST2 is in the works apparently) every few years?

I haven't heard any chatter from blogs so if you have any info, let's hear it.

thanks

No plans. No interest from the owner(CBS). And no obvious place for the show to air.

No news yet. But before CBS becomes interested in Star Trek, I would expect it to be preceded by a resurgence of the space opera genre on TV - nobody likes to stick their neck out, especially not CBS - and that's not on the horizon, either. :(

Everyone seems to think that CBS is waiting to see how the JJ films run their course before making a decision on a new series. I wouldn't expect to see a new one any time soon and I doubt it will be a reboot unless they get a really good proposal.

Why would CBS care about that? The existence of the movies wouldn't hurt their show. They might have a slight positive PR influence.

The bigger issues are that 1) nobody does space opera on TV and 2) even if they did, CBS wouldn't.

CBS would be all up for a Star Trek series if they could call it CSI: Bajor, Criminal Minds: Klingon Intent or Starfleet NCIS.

@Temis...like I said that has been speculation amongst fans on this very board even. I don't necessarily agree with it. If they get a good and interesting proposal for a "Star Trek" series they're green light it. Doesn't matter what continuity or time it's set in.

Was Space Rangers the last time there was an attempt at a full-on sci-fi space opera on CBS? That only lasted a handful of episodes.

Showtime.

People seem to forget that Showtime is owned by CBS and that's where they could put a show.

However I rather they get their asses going on making movies. There is almost no chance of Star Trek 2New coming out on time at the rate they are going with it.

Why would they put "Star Trek" on a cable network instead of their own network?

It is their "own" network - CBS owns Showtime and CW. It's common for corporations to own both broadcast and cable outlets, and makes sense because they are good at different things, have different business models and different audiences.

CBS shows need big ratings to compete - 10m or more. Star Trek won't get that on TV. Plus the audience is totally the wrong demographic.

CW shows get by with much smaller ratings, and I could actually envision a space opera that succeeds on that network, but the audience demographic would require an approach to Star Trek that I don't think many of us want to see. ;) (I wouldn't write off a Melrose-Space type series out of hand, but I don't want to see the Star Trek label on it.)

Showtime shows get by with smaller ratings still. There, success is measured by the ability of a show to attract new subscribers, but huge numbers aren't required, a million more subscribers would be just dandy. I think Star Trek could pull that off without breaking a sweat (remember, I'm talking one million subscribers, not simply people tuning into a channel they already have access to, which is a higher hurdle, but still.) And Showtime is the only one of the three that wouldn't mangle the content of Star Trek into godawful forms to appeal to their audience.

However I rather they get their asses going on making movies.

That's Paramount's job. The "they" for the TV series is a different "they." No reason "they" both can do their thing, either in collaboration or completely independently (though it would make sense on both sides to collaborate enough that they don't cause needless audience confusion that might harm both sides.)

On The CW it would have to appeal to the 18–34 female demographic...I don't know about "Melrose Space"...but it would be more soap opera than space opera...and the cast would need to be young and attractive...taking the premise of a ship whether it be Enterprise or not and boldly going is pretty much cake. A young crew on a space ship exploring shouldn't be that difficult. IMO.

Honestly, I think Starfleet NCIS is exactly what the Trek universe needs right now! Although I think CSI: Bajor would be more appealing to me personally.

Except Eleventh Hour only got one season on CBS. Even Sci Fi procedurals have a hard time when they are compared to CSI/NCIS.

Bingo! That is why Star Trek would never succeed on CBS, the bar is set way way to high. The show would be lucky to get in 5's consistantly so it needs to be on a network where that is a realistic expectation.

I just wonder if the mindset at CBS is to have a Star Tre series wildly successfull or nothing at all. It's all about expectations.

Cable is not such a bad thing these days, consider channels like AMC that are getting very high marks for there quailty series.

Personally, I think CBS looks at Star Trek as being a revenue-generating property they can license out to others--like Paramount--without having to invest many millions into themselves. Fans may complain and say they should do a new Trek series, but apparently CBS' position is "um, no, we don't."
