What do you do for a living?

What makes it slightly harder until someone speaks is how scruffy people are now - a great mass of trainers, t-shirts, jeans.

True. I like it. Evens everyone out. An accident of birth or access to cash does not make one person better than another. Although some stereotypes are all too true, they are dangerous things to live by.

Depends what you mean by ill-fitting. "Anti-fit" jeans can easily set you back a pretty penny. :p

I am the Clinical Director for a large veterans service agency.

We primarily (though not exclusively) work with homeless veterans.

Astronomer and science communicator.

My field of work is observational cosmology, with an emphasis on statistical analysis of galaxy distribution. I'm also involved in science popularization, giving talks about various research topics to students and the general public.
I wonder if you know this Swiss guy I know, who has basically the same job. Although now that I think about it he emphasized galactic evolution versus the formation of larger structures, which if I understand you, is your emphasis.

What's wrong with that old reliable, the weather? Or any number of polite non intrusive questions?

For example, anything wang-related.

I investigate welfare fraud. I'm basically a stereotypical drunken PI, only I'm employed by the govt.

Protip: Don't dump your significant other if you're committing welfare fraud.

Avionics Instrumentation and Gyroscope Technician...

And I love it...

Gyroscopes live in backwards land when they get up to speed, and many folks just can't wrap their brains around that... but I CAN...

Im just curious about what people do for a living, sometimes personal network connections come out of unexpected places.

I have a degree in marketing, and am in the process of starting a residential development company.

I work in retail and do Internet Marketing on the side.

Web & new media coordinator for a destination marketing organization.

So your a website designer.

No. (And, I'm sorry, but there's something kind of funny about you starting a thread to complain about the deterioration of the English language, and then you use "your" instead of "you're." :p)

The design of the website was handled by the firm which provided our CRM and CMS platforms, assisted by our staff graphic designer, who created the brand standards manual. This happened before I joined the staff of my current employer. We are planning a website redesign for 2012, but my primary role in that will be with regards to structure and functionality, what modules / features to implement, etc. Design will be handled by committee, led by the graphic designer.

My work involves the planning and execution of Web development initiatives (such as a new event search / calendar of events display module, implemented two weeks ago), the planning and execution of social media campaigns, and oversight of all email marketing initiatives and campaigns (which is my favorite part of the work, though also the most frustrating, due to interference from other departments). I also develop content, add and remove pages / content from the website, and am responsible for strategic planning for the DMO's future online initiatives.

Electrical Engineer, doing submarine work for the Navy. Realistically Systems Enginnering work, though.

You're still sounding like a website designer to me. Now the reason could be that my father does all of that and the graphics when he does websites. I wasn't just talking about the pictures.

Sounds absolutely nothing like a web designer to me, sure Timby clicks a few buttons on a CMS but that's not web design.

Software engineer, mostly C++, some Java.

One of these days I hope to upgrade my pilot's license to commercial so that it can make some money for me as well.

Technical support for barcode scanners. Technical support or customer service is the only job I've done in my adult life (over 20 years now).
