I was an offscreen news analyst at the local news station, I was shown on camera about three times, but I quit because I had to start bed rest for my pregnancy and they couldn't grant me eight months off for my maternity leave so I quit.

I've always thought this was one of the laziest questions in RL and my answer was: lie. No-one should be judged by what they 'do', which I always assumed was reason for question. What do you do? What does it matter? What do you believe in, what do you think about this or that, that's different.
Attend college and drain my parents' bank account in the process.

I'm almost embarrassed to share it because it's one of my worst pieces--I had about 2,000 words that I condensed down to less than 800, so it's way choppier than I like.

Or... they could just be making friendly conversation, you know. Lazy question it may be, but that just makes it easy conversation.
I will say this though, it's not a conversational question I often get asked IRL in this country (UK), or indeed ask myself terribly often early on. In other countries, esp. the USA, I've found it a far more frequently used early conversational gambit. Here it tends to be used later in the conversation.
When I do get asked it IRL, I have to quickly judge whether the person I'm talking to is going to plague me with questions and/or their life story, if I tell them the truth. If I think they're likely to, that's where having a portfolio career these days comes in handy; I just tell them about one of my other businesses, rather than leading with the doctor/shrink stuff. It's not a lie; it's a partial truth.
I work for an understaffed and underfunded university research center focusing on the international third sector (read: nonprofit/charity sector) and volunteering. My primary job is research project assistant, production and multimedia coordinator, and (unpaid) graphic designer, but I wear a lot of other hats, including being the only person who knows how to use a computer with any facility, which sucks...

Didn't mean to seem defensive and perfectly understand. Perhaps because been subjected to question a lot (both UK and US), more cautious. Agree can be icebreaker

That's an awfully cynical way to look at it. If I ask some one what they do it is because I am interested in people, and may be interested in their work. What people do can say a lot about them, about what they think and what they believe in.
I've spent a lot of time (personally and professionally) in States and I think this reveals interesting difference. In US, people generally more open and interested. In UK (in certain circles), what you 'do' defines class/background/status so more restrictive. If what you do of 'no interest' won't even ask what believe/think...will just ignore
Currently I work from home doing some basic internet research for a company that creates educational resources. However, it is very part time and the pay isn't all that great, and something that is temporary by nature and could end at any time. I have been applying for full time jobs in my chosen profession for a few months now. I want to be an archivist, one who preserves, organizes, and provides access to historical records. It's been about a year since I finished my Master's degree in a subject related to this field and six months since my internship in an archives ended and I am really missing it!

I'm a full time student working towards a BA in history. Once that's done its on to the MA and Ph.D. so I won't be out of school for years to come.
I worked the midnight shift at a shipping company for 3 years before I had to make the choice between the job and school. School won. Now I work on call for a janitorial company and whatever else comes along.

I am mr. teacake's mistress. He pays me a pretty sum to take care of all his needs, desires and minutiae. No whipped cream is involved (yet).
