And Brandon Routh for that matter. I don't want to refresh the Returns arguments, but a large part of my issue with the movie was all the actors playing the Donner actors playing the parts, rather than playing the parts directly.

Or maybe what you think is funny actually isn't. It's pathetic when people with bad senses of humor assume that people who don't enjoy their jokes have no sense of humor. After all, it's called a sense of humor, which should imply the ability to distinguish between what's actually funny and what isn't. Having a sense of humor doesn't mean you laugh indiscriminately at everything -- especially not at cracks that are hurtful to entire categories of human beings, like denigrating people over 40.

I was wondering why Gabriel Union was left off Dusty's list of possible Lois Lanes of Color, but, then I checked IMDB and discovered she is 38, so her time for Lois has probably passed, but, I think she would've made a great Lois of Color

Just curious, but what do you think of Don Rickles?

I'm surprised no one mentioned Keri Russell for Lois. She screen tested with Routh

I dunno...I think Routh, while honoring Reeve, put his own spin on it. For example, his Clark wasn't nearly as buffoonishly geeky.

Yeah, I can't help but sympathize with Singer a bit. Like me, he clearly expected that more fans would embrace a movie that paid tribute to the Donner/Christopher Reeve Superman we all grew up with, and that viewed the character in such a poetic, thoughtful (and even reverential) way.

And frankly I thought he did more than enough to make this world feel fresh and new; the various homages have never felt as blatant to me as they have to others, and I thought were worked in quite subtly and smoothly.

I did have to agree with the interviewer on one point though. As much as I love the movie, it WAS mighty unsatisfying that we never got to see Superman confront Luthor again and deliver a little bit of justice after the serious ass-kicking he got.

    Agreed with all of that.

I didn't see a lot of Hackman in Spacey's performance, BTW. In the way the character was written, yes - but Spacey brought a cold malevolence and some anger to it that was missing in Hackman's more comic approach.

Agreed. Spacey had an extra layer of sinister to him and really wanted some cold revenge on Superman. Hackman never really seemed all that irritated with Supes other than "You foiled my plan! Rats!" Killing Supes always seemed like a secondary measure, if possible (and if not, no biggies).

IIRC, the writers of Returns also toned down the "I, Lex Luthor, greatest mind of our times" speeches. That helped.

Michael Shannon just signed on to a project filming in the summer time. I'm assuming this means he won't be joining "Superman". I can't find the link to the story but will post it when I do...

They toned down the ego and made him a bit more of a sociopath.

^ Yeah Returns Lex was like a combination of mongrel Lex combined with schemer mix. I loved the white outfit though. Straight from the modern comics. There were touches like this that still made me wish that this was not a Donner homage.

Yeah, there was real malice in him. The Donner version was just pride and ego.

Which is not to say a word against Hackman, who's certainly not a lesser actor than Spacey. Just different movies with different scripts, different tones and actors making different choices.

Aw man. Well Mad Men isn't coming back until next summer so maybe theres still a chance for Jon Hamm for Lex. How was he in Sucker Punch? Was it remotely anything resembling a Lex Luthor type? I still haven't seen it yet.

Jon Hamm was rarely in "Sucker Punch" he plays
    the doctor who lobotomizes Babydoll
and pretty much is hard to judge.
