The Seventh Doctor Returns...

But not really.

Actually, really.

You see the BBC never issued an edict as to what is canon and what isn't. And the thing with Downtime is it was a fully creator-approved spinoff. It even got an official BBC-licensed novelization by Virgin Books (though the Doctor does not appear in the book). So it can be considered canon along with Shakedown, Daemos Rising, Wartime and other creator-licensed, non-Doctor spinoffs.

So unless Levine is doing an end run around both the BBC and Big Finish, then there's nothing saying this can't be "really".

(Of course those who are in the "only what's on TV is canon" camp, feel free to disagree. Thankfully the BBC never followed Paramount's lead with Star Trek canon, so it leaves the door wide open.)

The Seventh Doctor walks up to you, takes off his hat, and says, "But not really." <<<THIS IS CANON BECAUSE THEY NEVER SAID IT WASN'T!!! ZOMG!!!

But not really.

Here we go again. There is no such thing as Doctor Who Canon. Never has been, probably never will be. Arguing about it is silly and pointless.

OmahaStar meet the internet, internet meet OmahaStar.

I'm with you. I like that Canon is virtually non-existent with Doctor Who. It keeps it not being Star Trek and weighed down by fan expectations.

For chronics maybe, for the rest of us - as you say, if it doesn't happen on the screen it doesn't happen.

So is this like some kind of special edition thing for a DVD release of the story? A bit confused....

I've read the Downtime novel, but have not really seen the movie (Same with "Shakedown"). With some modifications, I wonder if they can make it into a Sarah Jane Adventures story? It'd be cool to have Victoria back, as she was last left in the 20th century.

No one's entirely sure but it appears to be an adaptation of Downtime which puts the Doctor back in (the original DTV version doesn't have him) which also incorporates other non-canon Seventh Doctor material like Search Out Science.

The interview with Sylv indicates he did several bits of Levine - including recording lines for the Dark Dimension - so it's also possible the Toymaker picture isn't from Downtime at all but from a separate project.

Interesting though. I just hope we end up seeing the outcome.

Thats what Ian would like, but its hard to imagine the BBC releasing it, and no one else can release a DVD with the Doctor in it.

I doubt that the BBC would release Downtime on its own, but it's not impossible to think that they might release it as a special feature on an official DVD.

Actually, the book of Downtime does include the Doctor (but only in cameos). But much as I'd like Downtime to be canon (after all, that would mean I've actually appeared in canon Who, albeit for about 1 second before being CGIed into a Yeti), I don't think so. And I doubt that adding in the Toymaker will sort out the storyline's weaknesses either.Edit: Andrew K had already made the first point for me!

McCoy is my favourite Doctor, still after all these years.

He actually DOES look like Hobbit in those pictures though haha!
