For the life of me, I can't understand how the casting of Kevin Costner in this (or any) role can be considered good news. He's the most boring actor I've ever seen.

    What?!

I have enjoyed Costner in every movie I have seen him in.

WHAT??? I suppose then Christopher you've not watched any of Nic Cage's recent films.

Kevin Costner is perfect for Jonathon Kent. Go read "Birthright" or "Secret Origins".

Good old Kevin Cardboard is still getting work, well thats nice. Maybe he and Clark will have a nice catch in the yard before Clark flies off. Of all the ways to go with the retool of Superman focusing on his origin seems to be the least entertaining. Do the suits believe the last film failed because we didnt get to see the origin again? Spending and hour and a half with Clark to get 20 minutes of Superman at the end is not why I go to see a movie called Superman.

I like Kevin Costner and while he doesn't have a dynamic range I think he has done a good job in the majority of the roles he has been in.

I really can see him as Jonathan Kent. I think this is a very good casting decision.

Redoing some version of Superman's origin is just fine - it hasn't been done since 1978, after all, and it's the best Superman story.

I wouldn't presume to say that my tastes should be adhered to by anyone else, but I just find him to have negative charisma. I have trouble even paying attention to him. Once he hosted a TV documentary miniseries about Native American history, and he gave his introductory narration standing in front of a forest, and as much as I tried to focus on Costner, my attention kept drifting to the forest behind him. So I literally find Kevin Costner less interesting than a piece of wood.

Costner is fine. Jonathan Kent isn't exactly Jack Sparrow anyway.

And arguably the best superhero origin ever. Like Bruce Timm (or someone else in this audio commentary of "Last Son of Krypton") said, it's got an 'Old Testament' scope to it. It's just epic.

A very good choice for his father imo :)

Exactly. It's a folk story, the myth of America.

Well, except for the first few years of SMALLVILLE, of course.

Well, the whole rocket crashing in Kansas, alien baby adopted by Midwestern couple, business was pretty much covered in the pilot. And subsequent episodes have fleshed out the Kryptonian backstory: Jor-El, Zod, the Phantom Zone, Krypton blowing up, the Fortress of Solitude, etc.

So the basic origin story has been rehashed in SMALLVILLE as well.

^ You could also include that Superboy series and even bits of Lois and Clark as having covered much of his origin story.

I fully expect it to be rehashed again. It's not as if the basics of Batman's origin were a big surprise to anyone in Batman Begins. There will be some new twists and undoubtedly an attempt to make it feel more "real" to contemporary audiences, but I doubt the "reboot" will skip the origin or dispense with it before the opening credits.
