Japan hit by 9.0 earthquake.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

We're glued to the TV in the teachers room... decently safe here (south of Tokyo) but it's scary stuff. Praying for all the people up north, and hoping these reactors are disables before anybody is exposed or hurt.

To the jokes, I think trying to make light of this through humor right now is just in bad taste.

What's the word on the volcano in the south. Was it a big one?

Been going on for months, some 10 eruptions since January. I'm not sure it's relevent to this situation, but it is likely to scare people even more.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

^ The stories didn't mention the previous eruptions.

Still, to me, it doesn't seem like a stretch that a 9.0 quake could stir things up 1000 miles away.

Hopefully not though. Enough going on over there right now.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I saw this a few minutes ago, and it's just so sweet, I had to post it (after bursting into tears). It's a man being reunited with his lost bestest good friend (the doggie is alive):

japanesemananddogreunited.jpg

That's sweet! I think I'd be crying too if my cat was found and brought to me. Very glad he got his dog. :)

Also makes me think of all the animals that may have died during all this too. The loss of life from all these events is very sad, so it makes me mad when someone says they deserved it for Pearl Harbor. WTF? They are vile and a waste of good oxygen.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

My brother sent me this link. It's quite long, but tries to explain what's going on so everybody can understand it.

Fukushima simple explanation

I posted that same explanation. ;) Admittedly, though, that version has a couple good diagrams which make it easier to understand.

It certainly explains in great detail in order to try and convince people who seem to think the Nuclear Plant is going to explode like a nuclear bomb. It's also quite likely a much better built and different type than Chernobyl so that type of situation isn't probably going to happen.

However, I take umbrage at how downplayed the risk is by those comments.

There was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity.
By “significant” I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on – say – a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

Sorry, but that statement just seems to be entirely untrue. US Navy helicopter pilots and crews flying in the area were exposed a months worth of radiation and had to be scrubbed down. The average person is believed to be exposed to about 620 mrem of radiation a year (half of that being from cosmic radiation which is naturally occurring and the other half being from technological things).

So I would assume from that to say the navy personnel were exposed to something like 50 mrem of radiation.(which is the maximum recommended total allowed per month for most pilots/flight attendants) To put it in perspective and use his long distance flight. It would take nearly 200 hours of non-stop flying between Hawaii and LA to be exposed to a months worth of radiation for the average person and that would take 8.3 days of time to accumulate that much. These navy personnel were exposed to these levels during the course of hours. Now I'm just guessing on the level of exposure based on statements saying they were exposed to a normal months worth of radiation.

I have seen articles saying that they are likely to experience vomiting and headaches, but that it's not life threatening... However, if they continued to operate in the area they could accumulate continued amounts of radiation that would put their lives in jeopardy.

That's quite different from saying there's no radiation danger at all. If you want to say this isn't going to immediately kill all people in the area and be a destructive event to counter the sensational hype of the media then that's fine, but there is real danger involved with this thing.

I also am not sure the media sensationalizing this for the sake of ratings is a terribly bad thing since if you were in Japan and hearing news and in the area then you'd likely leave. That seems to be a smart move IMO. If you're around the world and hearing this and freaking out you may be more moved to donate money to help aid Japan in recovery from the disasters they've suffered (and are still suffering). Again, also not a bad thing IMO.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

The radiation leakage from the exposed "spent" fuel rods in the cooling ponds is looking like it might escalate to INES level 6 -- akin to the Kyshtym disaster.

I don't think any of the nuclear industry pundits seen on TV considered this scenario.

Of course, the problem could be compounded by any fratricidal damage that an explosion in one building causes to neighbouring buildings.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Candlelight, any crass, tasteless, no-class bullshit you can possibly imagine exists on the web.

Normally you would have to look for it.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Is Pat Robertson still alive? Surprised we haven't seen a story about some ridiculous comments made by him about this tragedy since he said New Orleans got punished for it's 'debauchery'.

and throwing their hat into the 'God' ring I saw on ESPN that a female basketball player made these inspired comments

Cappie Pondexter, the three-time WNBA All-Star tweeted Saturday: “What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes.”
She later posted: "u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so u can't expect anything less."
Pondexter, who has also played internationally, including in the Turkey and Russian leagues, reportedly used the racially derogatory term “jap” in one of her comments as she addressed someone who was offended by her tweets.

Basically take out the tweeting and I think that could be Pat Robertson lol.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Apparently. But he's 80, so maybe he's too senile to churn out his brand of BS.

Or maybe he's mellowed out like other religious nuts/bigmouths, like Jessie Jackson. We haven't heard a lot from him in years.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

It seems that the Tokyo governor is just as bad as some American religious nuts

Tokyo's outspoken conservative governor Shintaro Ishihara has apologised for describing Japan's deadly earthquake and tsunami as "divine punishment".
"The remarks hurt victims, Tokyo residents and victims," he told a news conference. "I deeply apologise."
Mr Ishihara, 78, said yesterday that Japanese people were becoming "greedy" and highlighted the case of people who continue to pocket their parents' pensions by delaying death notifications.
"It is necessary to wash away the greedy mind... by using the tsunami," he told reporters.
"I think that it is divine punishment."

Rest of story here

I guess his deity needs to buy a GPS system because if it was divine punishment for greed it would have hit Tokyo's financial district and not rural communities based largely around fishing with a lot of one-story homes and nary a skyscraper in sight.

Nice to see dumbfuck religious assholes live in other countries besides America. We wouldn't want to have a monopoly on stupidity.
