I really love this artwork. Both are inspired by DS9 of course. He has prints for sale on his website, so I just thought I should share with the rest of you Niners.

Okay I found the site, http://www.brandonbird.com

VERY interesting, thank you!!

I liked it so much I have ordered a print of The Death of Jennifer Sisko.

I think the hugely dramatized religious elements of this painting are very much in keeping with how this event impacts the whole of DS9 and the Star Trek universe. I'm also rather touched by the Bolian being remembered. I can't wait to frame this.

Editing again to say, I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS, IT IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!

I totally agree with you. The artist is a huge DS9 fan. His other artwork is equally impressive as well. I especially enjoy the Law & Order valentines. As soon as I have the dough, I'm going to buy both prints and frame them. They would be a perfect addition to any Trek collection.

Pretty sweet stuff! Very good artist... tempted to buy something, but international shipping gets rough :(

Nobody's being sarcastic when they're talking about how awesome these are, are they?

It makes the baby Jesus cry...

Only 12 dollars! I'm quite happy with that, couldn't get any cheaper really.

This article/ slideshow has his feedback on 17 paintings including The Death of Jennifer Sisko which is slideshow number 6.

Here's what he says about it:

"This Deep Space Nine–themed work—visually inspired by the epic, roiling religious paintings of Caravaggio—is Bird's favorite. "I'm one of those nerds who's a very precise nerd," he says. "I like Star Trek, and lots of people like Star Trek. But I really like Deep Space Nine."
When other nerds gave up on DS9, Bird persevered, and the show's deeply complex plotlines inspired a whole series of paintings. "The show has these religious overtones and resurrection motifs, and that's what I'm retelling here. When I look at old paintings in Caravaggio's style, I have no idea what's going on, but I'm overwhelmed by how awesome they are. That's what I was going for here: overwhelming and awesome. But still really cool.""

I like them both. The second painting is called "Lesson of the Geese". I'm assuming it's supposed to represent Sisko being transformed into a prophet.

:p I wouldn't say that...

But while I like the realistic style of the first one, and the unique atmosphere of the second... and the old-look of the one Tosk mentions... I don't really care for them either. The composition seems a bit forced, especially in the first one.

Some of his other work is pretty nice thought- the Sperm whale Vs the Giant Squid!

Oh, but post if your print gets to you safe and sound! :)

Well, he's my kind of nerd in any event :techman:

Impressive art work, if not particularly to my taste.

Well he likens it to Caravaggio and a lot of that religious art was forced in style. Everything had a meaning and it was very important to make sure everything important was in the picture. Early christian religious art would just have random hands and objects floating over the subjects heads, because they were important to the story and needed to be included somewhere. There was often a lot of stuff crammed in as there is in the first pic.

Here's a Caravaggio, The Crucifixion of St. Peter

Yeah, I don't think Brandon Bird was trying to transcend into a new plane of art with his work. I just think he enjoys pop culture, and painting pop culture. Art during that time was more of a statement than it is today. If anything was obviously depicting the church as being "bad", you were killed. Bosch did a lot of paintings for the Catholic Church and they were all riddled with secret messages. But the people involved in the church were too stupid to realize what the painting was about.
