U.S.S. GEMINI - CGI Model

^

Exactly, aridas... you pretty much created a fan favorite. I know it I liked it enough for it to make an impression on me, lol.

I could have used any design for the Gemini, or I could have made my own. But here is why I chose the Surya as a platform, and why I like it so much...

IMO, as I have said before, TOS ships are not meant to look complex... they are arrangements of very basic and simple shapes, and are almost totally devoid of greeble-like detailing, and are very simple and smooth. Many fan designs have a tendency to go WAY overboard with things, as if the designer simply assumes he can improve upon something, when he is only ruining it. Examples of this can be multiple sensor dishes, three or more warp nacelles, redundant shuttlebays, or outlandish-looking warp pylons, such as the FASA Warspite-Class ship.

But the Surya doesn't do any of that... in its minimalist simplicity, it fits perfectly the TOS formula for a ship design... the saucer is a collection of simple shapes, assembled together in a pleasing yet not outlandish or complex way, the pylons are visually different, but just enough to be interesting, and not complex... they are still quite simple-looking. And the Surya does not have any needless redundancies, like two sensor dishes or more than two warp nacelles. Yes, it has two shuttlebays, but as aridas pointed out... it was meant to be a precursor to the Miranda, so it is true to the design legacy we saw on the Miranda... it doesn't deviate from that design formula... it adheres to it. So that is why I chose the design for the Gemini. I could have used the Loknar, and almost did... but then I'd have had to deal with people saying I was making a TOS NX-Class, and I just didn't want to deal with that comparison.

There are VERY few fanon TOS ships I really love... the Surya, the Ireland, the Loknar, and the Larson are pretty much it.

But --and this might disappoint a few people -- the bent pylons were a specific nod to Jefferies' Klingon D7. Jefferies communicated aggressiveness with the D7's "hunched over" appearance and if Surya was to be a TOS precursor to the aggressive Reliant it was going to have to do it by using some Reliant design cues as well as some Jefferies/TOS design cues.
You know, it occurred to me when this discussion started (I'm not feeling the teeniest bit flamed, btw) to ask you about the pylons. And I thought "Sure, like he's going to remember why he bent the freaking pylons almost thirty years ago." My apologies for underestimating you, my friend.

Well, she's finally finished!!! Casimiro has finished the Gemini, and below is the first completed render. There is also a link to the full-size high-resolution version.

aridas, Casimiro has asked me if you want to be credited in all the upcoming final renders, so I am asking you here. Please let me know, so I can give him an answer.

Such a Buetiful and lovely Vessel I hope someday to see it if possible in the 2012 or 2013 SOTL Calender :) :techman:

A nice model.

Personally, I'd ask him to change the pylons to make them thicker, stronger; they look awfully thin.

Wow... such high praise from everyone... I'm pleased that my approach to the ship turned out so well! Casimiro will be pleased that you like it so much!

Warped9, as before, thank you... I am beyond delighted that you like the Gemini so much. :)

And the Gemini being SotL-worthy... wow... what can I say... that is immense praise. I'd love to see it in an upcoming calendar, lol... I doubt it'd happen, but it's nice to dream. Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

I'd love to see this in a short animation, maybe even with a little film grain to look like classic TOS.

In my book there are three solid and established (in my mind) TOS starships:
Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser
Masao-class Destroyer
Surya-class Frigate

And there's also Vektor's Vanguard prototype. :techman:

I am curious if the model can be animated... I'll have to ask Casimiro about that. I know he is working on a nice image of the Gemini and the Enterprise together, so you will get to see that soon.

Politely inquiring if a 'formal' set of deck plans may be forthcoming, would much enjoy having a set if-when available. Very nice design indeed !

Oh, they will be, trust me... it'll just take a while. This is a very long-term project, and this 3D model is just one aspect of it... there's also the 2D plans, both exterior and interior, as well as a physical model.
