TrekBBS vs. the Music

-Television "See No Evil"

Never heard before. I don't listen to music from 70's at all really...but this wasn't too bad. 8/10.

-Madness "NW5"

Heard before. Pretty good song. 8/10.

-Hildegard Knef "Nichts haut mich um, aber du"

Never heard before. I don't understand german(But have listened to german bands)...I really didn't care for this...I don't mind this type of music....and in the comments it said the song was composed by Cole Porter who is great. 7/10.

Here are mine...

I won't review your tracks as I just did one, but I will mention that I love the band that recorded the second one. They've always been very popular here, but I feel much of the rest of the world has badly missed out.

They're surprisingly well known here. I'm probably not a huge fans but like many of their songs. I already knew "Our House" of course, but only bothered to listen to more of their work because my favourite comedian (one of the guys in the video) is a huge fan and I kept hearing songs I really liked through him. Two of my friends are also fans.

I don't know anything about reviewing music,

Neither do we. Or I should say, neither do I.

Not that I've let that little nit stop me.

I don't think this is any sort of objective exercise in ascribing a 'good music' or 'bad music' status to any of the songs posted. Or any sort of test to determine who has the 'best taste' in music. At least it's not those things for me.

Speaking only for myself, I'm mainly here to 'test drive' some bands I've either not heard at all...or heard only in passing via their most Top 40-friendly outings.

If I don't like something I hear here, I don't see it as any reflection whatever on the person who posted it (in fact, I have posted a couple of songs myself that *I* didn't even like, and I assume others have done the same, just to see the reaction!)...and if someone doesn't like something I post, I am assuming (hoping) they don't think any less of me personally for posting it. They just don't like the song/band/genre. Which is fine, given that everyone's preferences are different and most people who would participate in a thread like this are here in order to STRETCH their preferences, not really 'break them', if you know what I mean. :)

I just see this as a bunch of music fans of varying personal taste, background, and even age/era of music they grew up with, throwing out tunes they've heard to the crowd for fun.

If skills as a music critic or 100% impeccable taste are required...then I know that I, for one, came to the WRONG place!

Counting Crows - Up All Night

Well, people will probably laugh at me for calling those two songs too MOR and then saying that Counting Crows are one of my favourite bands, but there it is, they are.

Okay. Now it's just gettin' scary.

I wouldn't say they were one of my 'favorite' bands, but I do really like them a lot. I have always liked their sound...and back when they first came out in the midst of Grunge, I remember turning to them quite frequently when I needed a break from all the anger and angst and struggle and overall serious tone of grunge.

I mean, while Eddie was screaming "Drop the leash! Get out of my fuckin' face!" and Layne was lamenting being Down in a Hole, and Kurt was entreating people to Rape Me...these guys were singing about cruising the boulevard with "Mr. Jones", looking at girls.

Put in their historical perspective, they really WERE a very nice distraction from what was going on at the time in music. And you gotta love 'em for that.

I post music I like. :)

Well, I have to say then, that you might just take the prize for the person with the widest taste in music I have ever met.

It's pretty rare, you have to admit, that you meet a person who loves death metal, pop, and rap.

I am truly impressed. I really am. :)

You must think someone like me horribly limited. Maybe I should post some classical music, just to show you I know something about something other than grunge and alternative rock.

My taste is varied but not by genre really more by artists...there are some I like in a particular genre but it doesn't mean I like a lot of artists in that genre...I am weird.

Heh. Based on my posts people would think I listen exclusively to Tom Milsom. And they'd pretty much be right...I have to resist posting three of his tracks every single time I go to select songs.

Böhse Onkelz - Wir ham noch lange nicht genug

Böhse Onkelz - really? I know them, of course, but maybe that's not a good thing. They never managed to shake the negative reputation of being a Nazi band here, although that was a long time ago. But more importantly, I always thought their self-aggrandising was extremely tiresome and unwarranted, considering their mediocre musical output. They do that in this song, too. A mediocre song good for bellowing along with, which seems to be what the Böhse Onkelz experience is all about. The singing is almost painful for me to listen to, I feel like I have a sore throat now. I'll take Die Toten Hosen or Die Ärzte even at their most juvenile any day of the week over this. Sorry, Jetfire.

The second video didn't work for me, so it's off to the third one: CMX - Ruoste

I fully expected to hear some death metal but this is a beautiful, quiet and intense song, employing strings without sounding sappy. It could have been a bit shorter, but I'm seriously intrigued. I don't know what the song is about, I think it's in Finnish, and I've never heard of this band before. Will check out more of their stuff. :techman:

Here are my songs:

I'll take Jetfire's last song, since it's only fair

Natalia Oreiro - Tu Veneno
Very fun Spanish song. I'd probably listen to more of her. 4/5

The Strokes - Someday
The video didn't play right, but I found it on youtube (I suppose I could also have played it on my iTunes)
Somehow the Strokes can make these big, soggy songs (that's a technical term ;) ) and still pull them off. Love the little interlude in the middle where the bass kicks in. I wish it were a bit longer, though. Not the best Strokes song, but certainly worthy to listen to. 4/5

Van Morrison - The Way Young Lovers Die
You know, I didn't like this song as much as I expected to. I think the jazzy aspects of this song didn't quite work as well as I hoped. 2/5

Paul McCartney - Temporary Secrecy
I generally don't like McCartney's solo stuff, but I really like how this one begins. The electronic stuff is very different. I think the chorus could have used some work, though. 3/5

A Finnish girlfriend of old left me with the Aura album that this track is off, and a compilation called Cloaka Maxima. They are really diverse, very good band. A lot of their stuff is much louder than this though, but I think that tends to be their older material.

I wasn't going to review Jetfire's songs since I'd taken the previous round...but I wanted to put in that I listened to this one too and really enjoyed it, even though I did not understand the words. The melody was very nice...and I liked the singer's voice. :)

As an added bonus, it took me to some Russian music (where I DO understand the words - at least part of the time - it's been a while) which turned up on the side of the YouTube page. And that was great for me, since when I lived in Russia (mid-90's) everyone (and I do mean everyone - it was impossible to escape) was listening to this godawful techno clubbing crap and as a result, I left with a pretty low opinion of the Russian music scene and frankly, never looked back. However, seems like Russia has developed an actual rock industry of sorts since I left - which was great to see. Lord knows, they had nowhere to go but up.

^ Have you ever read Around the World in 57 1/2 Gigs by Dave Bidini? It's about a rather haphazard world tour he did after his band, the Rheostatics, broke up. Parts of it took place in Russia, and he has some interesting stuff to say about rock music in the former USSR.

I don't have time to tackle Alidar's at the moment, but if no one has taken them in a few hours, I'll probably do 'em. :)

1. Alkaline Trio - San Francisco

Never heard of these guys, but I like them. Or, at least I like this song. Has a punkish vibe & sound to it, without being too overbearing, and I like that. I would definitely listen to more of these guys.

2. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - The Message

Never heard of these guys either. Or at least I thought that, until I heard the "Don't push me, cus I'm close to the edge" lyrics. I definitely remember that, from listening to the radio back in the Dark Ages.

This is sort of a fusion of early rap and funk. I'm not really a fan of rap, but I sort of liked funk, so this was kind of a fun blast from the past. I've got some funk for you though - I'll have to find it.

3. Iron Maiden - The Trooper

Early Iron Maiden - what's not to love? :techman:

Oddly, though, I was not really a fan of them during this period (I was too busy with The Police and that whole 'British New Wave' thing that was going on at the time). I only came to appreciate Iron Maiden later on.

Anyway, I liked this one - awesome, awesome, guitar solo. Which is about right for them, of course.

I'll let someone else take yours, although cool choice for the first one (glad more than the one song is known by someone besides me ;) ). Also, the chick in the third video is very cute, even if I don't understand a word she's singing.

I usually don't like numetal all that much, but they play it very well. I take it the band's name is Slot?

BTW, I haven't listened to all of Alkaline Trio, but they are probably my favorite band that I found out about exclusively through word of mouth (basically a friend of mine said "you like punk, you should listen to them." Here's another song if you're interested (I need to listen to them more, I can't promise I'm picking their best, just a song that I liked the last time I heard it).

^ In answer to your question in spoiler tags, yes, that is the band's name - the Cyrillic, by the way, spells exactly that. The name is not a translation from a separate Russian word.

1. Blind Melon - Sleepyhouse

A pleasant sounding song in a genre that I usually enjoy, but it didn't really hook me. It's hard to explain why. But the style was interesting enough to make me think I might like other songs by this group, so I would be willing to see them out. And I may grow to like this one with repeated listens. It is something I can picture myself liking, even if I can't say that I do at the moment.

2. P, Funk (Wants to get Funked up) - Parliament

This, on the other hand, isn't something I have any interest in. It is well done for what it is, as far as I can tell, and isn't offensive to the ear. It just isn't the kind of music I would choose to listen to. It also goes on for a long time and spends a lot of its running time sounding like it's winding down, and I confess I kind of mentally tuned out for a while. The chorus is the most enjoyable part of the song. After a few minutes ofi t, I started to like it a little bit. But that's as far as I'll go, really. Not bad, just not my taste.

3. Russian Rock (I have to assume this is NOT the name of the actual song, though)

This is probably my favorite of the three. It's a little heavier sounding than I usually listen to, but not enough to turn me off. I liked the vocals, even if I didn't understand them, especially the female vocalist. Even if it did get to be too much like yelling during the chorus. It has a nice beat and I liked the guitar work. Not a perfect match for my tastes, but it was an enjoyable listen for the most part.

Hooray, thanks for bumping :D

The Corrs - Angel
There's something with the way the chorus kicks in that bugs me (it's a touch too poppy). But I love the celtic-sounding fiddle and flute part. So I'll give it a 3/5

Alana Grace - The Other Side
I'm always warry of songs that sound too close to Evanescence. I like the chorus, though (especially when it kicks in with that guitar). Overall, it's not my favorite style of music, but it does it well. 3/5

Garnet Crow - Rainy Soul
Sadly, I'm not really a fan of this song. I find it, overall, to be a bit boring. The vocals are sung beautifully, though (although I don't understand them at all ;) ). 2/5

3. Russian Rock (I have to assume this is NOT the name of the actual song, though)

Actually, even I have no idea what the name of the song is - the YouTube poster didn't post it (in fact, he didn't even post the name of the band, which is called "Slot", by the way). I looked through the first couple of pages of comments and couldn't find a title....but then, my Russian is more than a bit rusty at this point, so I might have missed it. Nevertheless, the band's name is Slot, if you are interested. :)

Hooray, thanks for bumping :D

No kidding! Goji saves the day! :techman:

I was really enjoying this thread and was sorta bummed that I might have killed it with Russian Rock and George Clinton/Parliament (which I mainly posted, by the way, as a representation of Funk...which was brought up in discussion).

Anyway, I have to go find some new songs (I had some ready, but the tabs on YouTube are now long closed and I can't remember what I had)...but I really like this thread. It's really fun for me to try new stuff, even if I don't end up liking it. :)

1. Don McCloskey - My Focken Glockenspiel

Awesome! This guy is sort of like Eminem Meets CAKE.

And who WOULDN'T get a sugar high from all those tasty, candy-coated morsels all wrapped up in some soft, moist cake?

I will be listening to more of this guy. I'm not a huge fan of rap...but I love CAKE...and this is sort of the next step in the rap direction, IMO.

2. Gipsy Kings - Bamboleo

A-REEEEE-VA!

Are these guys from Latin America, Spain, or what? I have heard this song many times, of course. But I have to say that the main memory associated with the song is related to a Miami Dolphins football game of my youth. Or more specifically, driving around, looking for a parking spot in the then-mostly Cuban neighborhoods surrounding the Orange Bowl.

I love the Latin beat of this song and ones like it. But sadly, it will always be associated in my mind with paying $30 to park in someone's yard.

3. Garbage - I'm Only Happy When It Rains

Hurray! Know and love, know and love. This, of course, was a pretty popular song so I've heard it many times. But I like it a lot. Garbage had a decent number of good tunes.

I've not kept up with them though...are they still around?

I wish there was more of his music on youtube. My first choice isn't there at all. I never thought about any Cake similarity before, but I can see that. He's got a bit more a folk style as well (he's got one song that sounds a lot like Bob Dylan, for what that's worth).

ETA: Love the third song you posted.
