Wonder Woman(NBC) *Spoilers!*

...With some serious tweaking, the basic premise of this show doesn’t have to suck...while aspects of this show could be fixed, my fear is that David E Kelley is totally out of his depth with this series...
Yeah. I wanna see this guy's Emmy collection.
Agreed. It's one thing to suggest Kelley's style or approach might not be best, but the guy has written moving scripts on euthanasia, capital punishment, bulimia, torture, rape... and a C-list superhero, "totally out of his depth"?! Whoever wrote that deserves a good, old-fashioned bitch-slap.

I know next to nothing about WW, so a lot of that review seemed like pointless nerding around to me, worrying about what era a character was introduced in.

No "magic and myth"? Can't they get to that in the middle of S1 and develop it slowly?

Too much like "one of us"? Maybe she's assimilated. She's had some time to do that.

Too weepy about her ex-bf? Oh well, we have to have some romantic angst.

Didn't you know? Only writers are allowed to critique writers. The great unwashed masses are supposed to passively consume and keep their opinions to themselves. Especially on a BBS devoted to discussion of science fiction and fantasy entertainment.

Well since anyone who isn't employed in the field isn't allowed to say anything bad since they don't know any better, by that same standard they're not allowed to say anything good about it either!

Yes, let's have Aaron Sorkin write the Avengers movie. Or maybe Tom Seidler should pen the next Iron Man.

There is such a thing as matching writer to material and it's not particularly bizarre to say that someone who may be very talented isn't exactly suited to a specific genre or property.

Or maybe WW isn't going to be a traditional superhero show, so Kelly's style is appropriate to whatever the show will turn out to be?

I find traditional superhero shows (The Cape, No Ordinary Family, Smallville) to be incredibly boring. I'd prefer something that breaks rules.

Didn't you know? If they have nothing pertinent or bright to say, people who blog on the Internet get no immunity from being criticized. This guy produced nothing other than an adequate synopsis of the script and vapid fannish spinning.

People like to mischaracterize complaints about qualifications as "you're saying only writers, artists, etc..." This is lame, but even lamer is the suggestion that everyone's opinion is worthy of one's time.

Exactly so. Calling the review "arrogant tripe" was measured rather than harsh.

Which differs from what I said in the above quote how, exactly?

;)

There was a show that happened to be playing on NBC while I was at the gym that is destined to be canceled. One of the actresses on there may be familiar to y'all from FlashFoward, she can hold her own with the action stuff, and I think she would actually fare pretty well as Wonder Woman:

Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should rule the world

Bwah hah! Bow to your new female overlords. Or ladies. Or something...err... :rommie:

I remembering reading something about the guy who created Wonder Woman that made him sound really errr interesting. Had some specific ideas about sex and gender roles. The kind of guy who might be into dominatrix action. Anyone know anything about that? ;)

Yeah, as an entertainment writer he's got a great future bagging groceries somewhere.

Well, personally I'd say his review of the script was a lot more reasoned, logical and better explained than your review of his review.

I didn't "review his review." I just posted what I think; what he did is not worth the effort to "critique." You are defensive on his behalf.

I'm just puzzled by the level of vitriol you show to what is after all a simple review of a tv script. He's not aiming to win the Pulitzer. He's saying what he thinks of the script, he's saying why he likes some of it, why he doesn't like other bits of it. I came away from it at least able to get some idea of what it might be like. That, to me, is a review.

TV Guide has their thoughts on who should play Wonder Woman...

Katy Perry
Erica Durance
Minka Kelly
Charisma Carpenter
Sophia Bush
Mila Kunis
Carla Gugino
Bridget Regan
Megan Fox
Stacy Kiebler
Katie Cassidy
Nadia Bjorlin
Olivia Wilde
Jennifer Connelly

They got pics and reasons for and against the actress.

Bridget Regan is the only one out of those that I think would fit very well. She was great in "the Legend of the seeker", she certainly has the look and athleticism/physicality down pat.

I dunno, I always found Bridget Regan a little bland in LotS. She was okay, but not great.

Charisma Carpenter would be a terrific choice if she were younger, but at 40 she's a bit past the point where she could play an ageless Amazon. And at 5'7"-ish she's a little short for it. Same with Jennifer Connelly and Carla Gugino -- they'd be great choices if they were 5-10 years younger and several inches taller.

As for Erica Durance, she's certainly got the face and figure for it, and maybe the charisma for it, and she's not bad as an actress; but I don't see her as ideal for the part, and I suspect the producers of the pilot might not be comfortable having Lois Lane play Wonder Woman.

Olivia Wilde is an odd suggestion; she's gorgeous and reasonably talented, but she doesn't look a thing like Wonder Woman. And Megan Fox? No blooming way. I don't find her appealing and she's certainly not much of an actress. As for the rest, either I've never heard of them or I don't know much about them.

Re the review: There is a mix of sensible thoughts (three different identities is strange, no matter if it's David Kelley or not,) and the usual set of crotchets fans develop. A feminist icon like Wonder Woman will be as contentious as the status of women. I don't recall off hand that Kelley's work is especially profound on that. The squeal of outrage that conventional wisdom about Kelley's talent should be not even defied, but just ignored, is mindless. No thinking involved.
