TBBS and treatment of women

Yea, I hate that term "tramp stamp".

Most people only use it because it sounds cute and it rhymes. I know very few people who actually consider it derogatory - the rest just sound stupid saying it. They're like a broken record, continuing to repeat something that sounded cool 10 years ago.

LoLing here...i recently told my husband i was going to get a "tramp stamp" on my back, right above the panty line...of ...wait for it...wait for it....

The Enterprise. Right across my back, from hip to hip.
He didn't laugh.

Does it help your case or hurt it that I completely approve of such an action?

I prefer the term "ass antlers" myself. Gender neutral and alliterative!

(Forgive me, having to photoshop those things off of regretful wearers on a regular basis constitutes one of my professional frustrations).

Must...not...post "This." ... MUST...NOT...

Oh, the hell with it.

THIS. :techman:

Oh deer...

Yeah, and the "funniest" thing is that it's always the SAME topics that crop up. Every forum has its own incessantly recurrent threads that never fail to descend into douchebaggery eventually (and sometimes far sooner than "eventually").

If I ever create a dual, I'm going to go forum to forum with each forum's particular "sure to implode" thread.

Now I'm kinda hoping that catches on.

@Jenee:

well, people are either 'repeating something that sounded cool 10 years ago', or just using the term that's in the popular lexicon right now. Great if you want to think you're ahead of the curve, but frankly, "tramp stamp" is just generally what those are called right now. Without thinking too hard for examples, it was discussed in the movie Wedding Crashers, also a few episodes of How I Met Your Mother, when the lead character (male) got drunk and woke up with one.

Rolls off the tongue a bit easier than "lower back tattoo" as well...

Whether you want to read context into what people are saying, and figure out whether they are being sexist or just using the commonly-used name, that's up to your own sensibilities, I suppose. I usually refer to A-neck t-shirts as "wife beaters" as well, but don't subscribe to spousal assault. Just the term 'out there' for them. Pretty sure could use that term and have people all know what I mean without having to describe it, as well. What do YOU call those?

That would be cool.

You work at a magazine?

I sure the hell don't calle 'em "wife beaters".

Just because a term is popular doesn't mean it's origins weren't derogatory.

If you feel justified using the term, go ahead.

But, don't pretend it's anything different that what it is.

Online adult entertainment directory. Ironic, considering the nature of this thread.

I worship at the altar of this suggestion.

cool. and yes, it is.

Double dose of irony: I'm female and consider myself a feminist, though I can't say lockstep relatability with academic feminism is my strong suit. Working in a tangential capacity to the sex industry and observing it daily/interacting with the participants on a regular basis has given me an unorthodox perspective on feminism, for sure.

My various drivebys not withstanding, I have actual opinons on this particular topic (TBBS and the treatment of women)informed by 9 years as a member of this board and the target on and off throughout the years of some of the more extreme behaviors discussed here, but unfortunately, I don't have much time in the coming weeks to expound.

I understand. I'm don't have a lot of free time, either - in fact shouldn't be posting now.

So, as can be seen in this thread, my short answers leave much to be desired.

I want to remind everybody about what a great board this is, even when you may have disagreemtns, or evil eyes for occassional members:

We're the most populated, updated, MODded, and active Trek board there is. We even have people from the series posting here in rare occassion.

If you think it is bad here, check out other sites with few to no MODs, or the IMDB Trek boards. So, don't go overboard on sexual witch hunts or pissing & moaning (no pun intended) -- we've got somethign resembling a good things here (it could be better, and it's been going downhill for a bit now I think) and we should screw with it terribly.

There is no perfect solution. There is no way to please everybody. You CAN'T please all members.

Remember, we are talking about a board that has had multiple Thread Bombs thread with "I'd Hit That" images and other dirty or inuendo images, and a board that used to have hread about how big guys are down there and how frequent they take care of business. Where were the whinnies for over ten years? It's suddenly an issue now? The MODs are handling it, as the recent picture thread shows, so don't jump the horny shark here.

I missed SPOCKED, to a certain degree.

Ok, i seriously love 'ass antlers!'.

Btw, a good friend of mine referred to my tattoo as a tramp stamp....and it's ON MY ARM!! (go figure!)

Yeah, we call them wife beaters too. I was never physically abused by my first husband (he may have been a royal asshole, but he never hit me). But certainly, that would be terribly offensive to some women. Heh, we also call them "guidos" ....and i'm italian!

Anyway, you have a point about those terms being easily recognizable. Somehow the culture has to come up with other terms that won't hit the hot button for some people. We need to think of a way of changing minds and habits (me included).

Not to mention plenty of men who wear that style of shirt. I don't wear them, yet I still can't bring myself to use that term.

A laudable idea... but you can't always predict what will set someone off.

To us Brits, 'Wife Beater' is slang for Stella Artois lager, and the reason is hopefully obvious.
