Outcasts (BBC) series 1 discussion thread

BSG was ruined for me when i saw them using a Humvee and a Steyr waaaaaaay the hell out in deep space. it just ruined my disbelief suspension.

at least with Outcasts, the Glocks and L85s are just 20-30 years old...

And given they brought them with them when they left Earth 15-20 years earlier they're not out of place at all.

Saw about 10-15 minutes in the middle of whatever was the most recent episode. Nothing grabbed me particularly, though production values seemed basically OK and the cast looked as if they were taking the material seriously.

It just seemed slow to me, even though there was a fight of sorts during part of the bit I caught. One thing that few current British dramas manage to do well is match the engaging pace of a lot of US shows. Spooks is the obvious exception, Sherlock also managed it, and there are a few others... but the default is a slower, more indulgent, pace that needs excellent scripts and acting to draw the viewer in. And most of the time the latter two just aren't there in sufficient depth/quality. Pace disguises a lot of flaws.

During the bit I caught, someone stern-looking asked something like: "are we doomed to make the same mistakes here too?" I couldn't help thinking: "Yeah, that's probably where this is all going. Can't say I want to watch that."

My channel-hopping nature will probably mean I end up seeing the odd further 5-10 minutes in the future, so maybe I'll be converted. But I'm not hopeful.

I popped in her to assess the hotness factor of Bamber and Mabius to figure out whether I might catch this show someday. But based on the comments, no degree of hotness could make this worth it.

The acting is fine but the characters seem a bit incompetent in their approach to their problems. If they're not careful we could find ourselves shouting at the TV screen at how dense some of them are.

Urgh. Incompetent characters are one of my pet peeves in a show.

Wow, sounds like a total drag. :rommie: Why would anyone want to watch a foregone conclusion like that? Also any whiff of self-pity in a show (we're doomed, I say, DOOOOOMED!!!) just makes me contemptuous of the show in general. Are they trying to make us feel sorry for them? Pffft! Get a grip, losers.

How about making Our Heroes determined NOT to repeat the same mistakes and actively work to achieve that goal? Give people something to root for or they'll change the channel. I know I will.

^That's the fucking point. They are working not to repeat the same mistakes and she was pissed off the president had done experiments and then ordered the results executed. Everyone there thinks they're working not to make the same mistakes but the people up top are still fuck ups.

So everyone that wasn't British missed the boat ehh? Oh sure there are comments about a Chilean family and the like, but I would have hoped for better from the Brits. At the very least show us evidence that there is some cultural diversity that made it along the way.

I also don't get exactly why they don't want people expanding. The more territory they settle the more food they can produce, the less likely any one's destruction will mean destruction for all. what happens if their town catches fire? where do they go for shelter?

Having only seen the first episode, maybe they work on this stuff, but I just don't get what the story is they're trying to tell. Show might have been better off without this episode at all.

I seem to remember there's been at least 4 or 5 different countries represented. British, Irish, American, I seem to remember a South African accent and perhaps someone else I'm forgetting.

I assume there's more to why they're not wanting people to move out, the president seems shifty.

It is possible a South African accent sneaked in under my radar if I wasn't listening for it, but I definitely can't find an American in there anywhere or at least not one that sounds like an American. The kid's teacher had an accent, but I'd have to go back and listen to place it since it was layered under her English one.

Perhaps they showed up in the 2nd episode, which I haven't seen yet.

Karina had a very mild (from my ears) accent, but clearly English on some key points. I didn't pick up any telltale signs for any European accents I'm familiar with but again a case of stacking accents if so.

Never mind the orange Glocks (apparently all official gear is that color). The big question is: Why didn't they bring any vehicles with them? Not even a motorcycle, ultralight, bicycle or horse!

Also, I couldn't quite make out what "AC" stood for. The first word, I know, is "Advanced", but the second one got kinda garbled. Started off sounding like "Cont..." but I couldn't extrapolate the rest into a word that made sense.

AC = Advanced Cultivars, I think.

However, the whole thing does come across as somewhat of an "idiot plot", as James Blish had it.

^ Thank you, my friend! Makes sense now... I'd never heard the word 'cultivars' before.
See there? It's just like they say: You learn some'n new every week!

Those clones looked pretty old considering the fact this is supposed to play in 2040 and we haven't yet begun this program. I didn't quite understand where they came from; were they made on the planet or did they come along on the transports? Also, what connection could there possibly have been believed to exist between them and the disease? I mean, they're just humans with certain properties which can be found in the others living there, too. It would have made much more sense if the people living outside the fence would have been the ones deemed carriers of the disease or something like that.

That still sounds pretty fucking stupid. :rommie: I don't want to watch a show about a bunch of fuck ups, unless Jamie Bamber and Eric Mabius are dancing around wearing nothing but towels.
