Also, I spent some time listening to QOTSA last night - as I'd hoped, a billion times better without the death metal singing. I am going to look at more of that!

Okay, on to your picks!

1. Army of Anyone - It Doesn't Seem to Matter
I'm not as familiar with Filter - another one of those bands on my to-do list based on what I've heard on the radio...but having just never gotten around to listening to full albums.

But I DO know and love STP (I know - big shock ), so this supergroup is right up my alley.

I've heard this song before (via my interest in STP) and like it a lot. Great pick!

2. Fugazi - Waiting Room
I've not heard these guys before at all (although I have heard OF them), but this is another band I might like, as I used to quite enjoy punk. Might end up being a bit hardcore for me now, in my 'old age' . But I liked this song enough that I would definitely listen to more.

3. Butthole Surfers - Pepper
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these guys, and this song (which of course I've heard many times). Not much to dislike about these guys. Except maybe their name.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought: what, TrekBBS is at war against music?

Anyway, TrekGirl's picks (and FINALLY! one of your videos is not 'blocked in my country' (grrrr) like in a couple of your posts earlier...)

1. MC5 - Kick Out the Jams
The only one of these 3 tracks I already knew. Excellent late 1960s garage rock/proto-punk track. I love this kind of music (though I'm more into The Stooges than MC5, Iggy Pop's voice is ), it really makes me want to get up and dance and rock out. The lyrics are a bit dumb though (another reason I prefer The Stooges).

2. Jerry Cantrell - Anger Rising
I loved Alice in Chains, but I haven't listened to Cantrell's solo stuff before. Maybe I should. This is an excellent grunge song, really makes me go back to the early 1990s (and I mean that in the best way possible), with really dark lyrics about domestic abuse of a child. Cantrell's voice is pretty good (it doesn't have that something special that Layne Staley's had, but it is good on its own, so I don't miss Staley's vocals that much). I especially love the bassline, it really gives the song a dark feel (apparently it's the bass player from Metallica, so it's not surprising that the bass is so good.)

3. Tad - Grease Box
Another grunge band. I never listened to Tad, I only knew them as 'the fat guy who toured with Nirvana' so this is my first encounter with their (his?) music. It's standard grunge but it's really good, and the lyrics are very dark (again apparently partly about child abuse). The vocals are OK, but there are better out there (he's no Vedder or Staley or even Cobain).

Mumford & Sons - The Cave

Never heard of them, but it's a very catchy tune. I coulld definetely stand to hear more from them. Interesting choice of instruments, too. You don't hear soemthing modern with a banjo too often. Or at least, I don't.

Yeah, they pull out all sorts of instruments more associated with folk music in their songs (mandolins, accordions, banjos). I also have yet to meet someone who doesn't like their music when they've heard it. I'm sure they're out there, but the word of mouth on these guys is pretty fantastic.


Onto the next songs:

"The Damage I've Done" by The Heads

-Have not heard of them. Good beat and nice loud chorus that caught me off guard. The riff also gets stuck in your head (no pun intended) I think my favourite part about them overall is how their Wikipedia entry classifies them as and English stoner rock band.

"A Thousand Kisses Deep" by Leonard Cohen

-I have not familiarized myself enough with Cohen's music, but I've been told I'd like him. Very atmospheric, like walking down a cobble-stone street on a creepy foggy night.

"Halo - Goldfrapp Remix" by Depeche Mode

-Another selection that's all about the atmosphere. The music matches the video quite well, like it's the soundtrack to an artsy film noir. It's not bad, just moody, and I wasn't really in the right mindset for it. I listened to the original afterwards, and whoever did the remix did a pretty fantastic job of really making the song into something new.

Not the same Heads. There's one band called The Heads that is a apparently an English stoner rock band (haven't listened to them so I don't know.)

These The Heads were the band made up of the members of Talking Heads without David Byrne. They made one album in 1996, called "No Talking, Just Head", with different guest vocalists (Debbie Harry, Richard Hell, Gordon Gano, Gavin Friday, Michael Hutchence, Maria McKee, Shaun Ryder...) The singer on this song is Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde.

Yeah, STP is the reason I started listening to them (and then I started listening to Filter as well). As far as the 2000s super groups that emerged, I think Filter was very underrated.

Might end up being a bit hardcore for me now, in my 'old age' .

Well, I thought about Ian MacKaye's other band, but Minor Threat is definitely too hard core for most audiences.

Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead
Is that a cello? I like the diversity of instruments. It's a very innocent-sounding song (although, what I can tell from the lyrics, maybe not). I might listen to them again. 4/5

Mutemath - Break the Same
Very atmospheric. It's hard to place my finger on it, but I wasn't wowed by it. Liked the drum solo/breakdown, though. 3/5. Might listen to again, but wouldn't go out of my way to.

Over the Rhine - Ohio
I've never been to Ohio. I'm not sure if this song makes me want to go there or not
Very soulful vocals. Clearly the highlight of the song. I might listen to more, this song is pretty cool. 4/5

1. Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You



Okay. I'm not sure if these guys are trying to cash in on Andy Warhol, Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody) or The Rolling Stones (this song sounds suspiciously like Brown Sugar, only with different words)...or possibly all three.

But what I AM sure of is that they do not have an original thought in their collective heads.

I know...I know.... "Now tell us what you REALLY think! Don't hold back or anything..."

Anyway, as soon as I heard the opening riff for Brown Sugar, I was smashing the 'dislike' button on YouTube. Although I suppose that if you are going to rip off another band, there are certainly worse bands to rip off than the Stones.


2. Dirty Heads - Lay Me Down
Jeez...these guys sound like someone else too! Although in this case, I can't figure out who, and it's driving me crazy. I looked them up on Wikipedia, hoping that the lead singer had been in a band I'd heard of or something...but no dice. Nevertheless, this band, and specifically the singer, sounds very much like someone else - I just can't place who.

Anyway, an okay song. Nothing extraordinary or anything, but not bad either.


3. Filter - Welcome to the Fold

Okay. Now we're cookin!

I love bands that 'fill up all available space' (part of the reason I love Springsteen and PJ so much) with a big, full sound that you can get lost in. And this band does the trick. In fact, this band sounds a fair bit like Pearl Jam, only with a different singer. At least on this song, anyway. Might not sound like them all the time - this is the only song I've heard of theirs that is still in memory, since I have XM radio (and thus, E Street Radio and Pearl Jam Radio) and don't listen to 'regular' channels much.

In any case, as the title says "Welcome to the Fold", PKTrekGirl! I love these guys on first hearing and will definitely be looking up more of their tunes. Excellent pick!

That's an interesting idea with the rotating singers, and something I definitely didn't pick up on with my extremely extensive (i.e. quick glance at Wikipedia) research.

I was trying to figure out how that sound translated to stoner, but I figured maybe some of the crazy visuals in the video would look better if stoned.

Ah, I just saw comments on the video that indicated it was unknown who did the remix. I just through Goldfrapp was a cool name the remixer chose (like "Sunday Chocolate Cola Mix").

Yeah, this isn't their best song, I mostly just picked it for the breakdown. It goes on much longer in their usual live shows, with the members exchanging instruments and the drummer doing a solo on whatever is around (when I saw them live it was the singer's mic stand and the rafters above the stage). There's something I simply find amusing about the singer doing handstands on his keyboard on The Tonight Show.

Over the Rhine - Ohio

Over the Rhine is definitely all about the vocals, though their style has ranged from alt-country to gospel to jazz to baroque over the years. If you're interested in more, I'd recommend their album "The Trumpet Child" as a pretty good showcase of what they can do, or any of their live albums.

Well, in fairness. I should probably give them another shot. I was just so stunned about the Brown Sugar riff (and even more stunned that, when I read the YouTube comments, no one else seemed to pick up on it either - at least on the first couple of pages) that I went into 'automatic instant-rebuff mode'. Which I admit probably wasn't fair at all. In fact, I might well have liked them if any other song had been posted. And I might have even given them another shot on the spot if I, only moments later, hadn't opened up that Filter video and fallen crazy in love.

That was a crazy-fun set of picks, because I really disliked one, was okay/indifferent to the second, and LOVED the third. All over the map.

Sounded like Grendel's mother dying. I like metal and some death metal, but this was an incoherent mess. The piano build up was also kinda boring and went on for way to long. Solo kinda just seemed tacked on at the end. 0/5

Much better. Sorta the female version of Alice of Chains. Maybe a bit too derivitive of them? I might listen to more of them. 3/5

OK, I have no idea how to judge a cover song, especially such a famous song. It was played fine. Of course, it's not the most challenging of songs (Kiss never is). I guess I can't complain, but it doesn't give me a good idea of what the band is about. 3/5

1. Liz Phair - 6'1''

I've never heard of her. It's always hard to judge a song one has never heard before by a live version. (There are some songs, though, that come off much better live, e.g. Highway by The Fireman (Paul McCartney) is such a song for me.)
Anyway, back to the song. I liked it - a guitar rock piece that sounds like fun. I wouldn't mind hearing more from her (or them - is it a band?).


2. The Breeders - Cannonball

I haven't heard that one in years. Reminds me of the time when MTV still played music videos and was deemed relevant. I always liked the song, the bass lick is outstanding. The singing isn't my cup of tea, however. That's probably why I never checked out their other songs.


3. Veruca Salt - Seether

I watched it on DailyMotion once I found out what the song was. Sounds grungy. I don't think I've heard of them. But I like this song.

^ Bah, you were faster... This is the second time I wrote a post only to have someone come first. And the videos actually all worked for me the first time.

I was going to say that I knew all of these artists. Liz Phair was never my cup of tea, and her singing is really off-key. The Breeders were OK though I was not a big fan, but I remember when this song was a big hit. I also remember the Veruca Salt song, but they were just another early-mid 1990s US alter-rock band with twee female vocals. Not my thing. Give me PJ Harvey or Johnette Napolitano instead. Or even Courtney Love.
