Flags of the World

At least that’s better than the original proposal to add a star and a stripe for each state. Can you imagine a flag with 50 red-and-white stripes? It would look like an awning in front of a candy shop.

Kind of like the proposed EU 'Barcode' flag:

Holy christ!

No kidding. Looks like the EU attempted a massive Mail Merge that didn't quite work out as planned.

I would agree with you under most circumstances, but "California Republic" is not actually saying the name of the state, but rather referring to the name of the brief revolt by Californians during the Mexican-American War that preceded nearly immediate annexation by the US and later statehood. So it's sort of a historical reminder and similar to the "Don't Tread on Me" on the Gadsden Flag and thus symbolic in that respect.

I understand that, but it's still writing on a flag. Whether it's a slogan, historical reference, in Latin, whatever, it's lame. :p

Bear > Leaf from a syrup tree :p;)

It's all good. Canada has bears covered elsewhere. ;)

What a great topic! I love flags! I really like the Arizona flag, but I am biased. I like the Macedonian flag because its reminiscent of the Arizona flag. I also like the colors and unusual shape of the Ohio flag. The U.S., Canadian, UK, and Swedish flags are probably my favorites national flags. I like the Don't tread On Me flag. It does have writing on it, which I usually don't like, but the symbolism of the rattlesnake is pretty cool.

Canada has changed flags fairly recently in the grand scheme of things. I mean, most people living today don't know of any other. So I'm all for change, but lay off the fucking kangaroos already.

The Kangaroo can work as a national symbol - see the Royal Australian Air Force Low Visibility Roundel below - but I agree that it's probably best to leave it off the flag. There's room for at most one such affectation, and the Southern Cross is it.

Well, I'm glad you were the one to say it. Because at least in the US, I don't think there is any ethnic cuisine that is more associated with a country's flag than is Italian cuisine. (...)

But truly...it really is incredible how associated your flag is with your cuisine.
Yeah, very true. I suppose it's because of it's iconic design, and because it's pretty much the only symbol that is used for Italy as a whole (opposite to the plethora of historical symbols for each city or region).

My favourite flag is the UK flag bu there are lots of neat ones. If Australia changes their flag, they're super lame!

Flags have historical significance and should not be changed on the whims of a particular political party, or even a particular generation.
Well, Canada changed its flag fairly recently, discarding the "colonial nonsense" and adopting its own peculiar symbolism. I think Australia and NZ could do the same.

The worst (Marche):

WTF is that supposed to be? A cross between a duck and a swaybacked horse?
It's a woodpecker (historical symbol of the region) crossed with a capital "M" for Marche. Super-lame.

Call me weird, but I kinda like it, in a cheesy 70s kinda way. Not as a flag, tho.

Too many bland national flags out there, but I do like Brazil's and Jamaica's flags. Oddly enough, I'm not a big fan of green flags.

For something different, this page has a lot of different city flags. It's not a complete list, but it is interesting. I really like all of Portugal's city flags - they're consistent and they have a nice style. On the other end of the spectrum, Tampa's looks like it was designed by committee, and Provo's looks like a Centrum ad!

Watching that fly in a stiff wind would probably give some people seizures.

There would HAVE to be controversy about the order in which countries are represented on the flag.

That reminds me, the Contrada flags of Siena are pretty cool as well.

My favorite flags belong to the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and New Zealand (though I really like this alternate idea, too).

I'm a fan of that one as well. It's cool looking, while still fairly subtle. It cuts ties to the Union flag without abandoning the colors. And it looks distinct enough to never be confused for the Australian flag ;)

One of the arguments I've heard against - or for, depending on one's perspective - changing the Australian flag is that it further divides Australia from New Zealand, eroding solidarity between the two nations and pushing national unification just that tiny bit further out of reach.

I've never even heard of there being any kind of movement to "unify" New Zealand and Australia.
That proposed flag looks more like a sports organisation or something than a national flag though, the leaf needs to be a lot more stylised imo.

I think the chances of Australia and New Zealand unifying are about the same as America and Canada. In other words, not very high.

New Zealand was at one point annexed to New South Wales ... for a day or two while the Crown got its shit together.

The Australian Constitution specifically provides for the induction of New Zealand. The Kiwis declined at the time mostly because they treated Maoris better than Australia did its Aborigines. Principled bastards.

More recently there's been some talk of a currency union, although I imagine the Eurozone crisis has pretty much scuttled that. Something that is actively being negotiated are arrangements to treat flights between Australia and New Zealand as domestic rather than international travel.

Odd, I consider both to be inevitable.

Based on what? What does Canada have to gain from unification that it could not get through close ties, free trade agreements, and other confederacies that still preserve sovereignty?
