she's the exception as far as i'm concerned. she may have never travelled in the TARDIS, but she was the Doctor's companion for the whole season and she travelled with him on his adventures, just not through time.
She travelled with him through time, but just in one direction at the regular speed.

And yes, Zoe has a fantastic bum.
There's also Grace from the TVM, who is sometimes listed as a companion even though she specifically refuses to become one at the end of that story.
For me, I'd define a companion as someone who shares more than one consecutive adventure with the Doctor, though I'm pretty sure even that doesn't work in some instances.
I'm curious if the Doctor at some point did capture the souls of his lost and murdered companions and built them some sort of neverland in the shape of Camelot for "they" to play out happily ever after in, since Sarah Kingdom does pass a remarkable resemblance to a certain sorceress that is known to stomp and romp about such a place.
Interesting hypothesis especially considering Sara Kingdom's "side fate" as revealed in the Big Finish Companion Chronicles.
