The New York Son of Sam law was only invoked 11 times between 1977 and 1990, so it's not a sure bet that it would have been enforced. In point of fact, the original New York law was struck down, so the end result might have been the same even if the Son of Sam law were invoked. Later laws filled the First Amendment loophole found by the Supreme Court, but those laws would probably be too late to take care of this particular situation.
