Design the Next Enterprise

When I saw the double-rim of your 1701-F, Vektor, for a while I thought that would make a cool seam for a saucer separation. . . Then I followed your seam and noticed it wasn't contiguous, and I remembered, "Oh, that's right, he's one of those sensible guys who doesn't do the saucer-separation thingy."

Well, I can't completely disavow it. The Grandeur has a separable saucer, although in that case it's a very well-armed and independantly warp-capable saucer. I did briefly consider adding the option to my Ent-F design and the double-rim was actually inspired by that, but I just decided I wasn't going to go there.

I hope I wasn't all Ricky Gervais on your entry there, Vek, because I think there are gorgeous elements to it. I notice how the top line of the profile references the NX-01 just a bit, which is a nice touch. I just think That One Part of it doesn't fit for me.

There was no conscious effort to reference the NX-01. Not that I didn't like the NX-01. The most direct influence was actually my old USS Titan design, which had almost the exact same plan view silhouette.

It might interest you to know, though, that I have been mulling over your observations and I have come up with an idea for a very minor alteration to the deflector area that I think could make all the difference. I'll try to put together an updated sketch within the next day or two if I can find the time to work on it. Not that it will matter to the contest, but if I'm only one waddle away from perfection then I guess I can't quit now. ;)

BTW, if you win, I would think there would be alterations & refinements (there always are,) and I should hope they would consult you with that.

^those views are sans saucer. Rare for a design to look good without the saucer attached.

It was a purely accidental effect. I wanted a dome on the underside of the saucer. But I was sure that it wouldn't look very good to have it peaking out beneath like the Sovereigns quantum turret, (just hate that) so I recessed the dome into saucer and since my ship didn't have a neck it didn't make sense to create a mated flange like the Galaxy has at the top of it's neck. The result was interesting. kinda...dolphin like.

I guess that's it.

Maybe, maybe not. Some of the verbiage in the official rules leads me to believe they are at least leaving that option open, but I'm not counting on that any more than I am on winning the contest in the first place. There really is some tough competition up there and not just from the finely polished entries. Artistic presentation is all well and good, and certainly valuable from the standpoint of getting your work noticed and helping it stand out from the crowd, but it's not among the judging criteria. It's very possible the winner may come as a surprise to all of us.

I am sure they will want to ad the STO gunmetal look. Either way who knows what they will do and how they will Work with the winning artist. Only time will tell. I for one can't wait to see the finalist.

There is no way to tell really.
I suspect you were heavily consulted with Titan but STO isn't the same sort of raw project. It has parameters and dependencies. I'm sure there will be their own modelers that will have been directed to certain standards for the game.

Actually I didn't know the Titan was going into the game until a player of the game pointed it ou to me. So I had no input at all.

I have to say, you folks have created some terrific designs. I was going to enter this contest but ultimately didn't due to busyness at work. Some of the gallery entries on the site, the kitbashes and the like, are pretty laughable. However, the designs I've seen in this thread give me some hope that we'll see a terrific final winner, hopefully one of you guys. ;)

So, early this afternoon, I was at about 54 votes and had slowly risen to #6 on the Highest Rated list over the last two days. Then, in the span of less than half an hour, I picked up another 4 votes, each one knocking me back down until I dropped below #45 and completely off the list once again. :wtf:

Okay, I retract my previous statement. Even the cleaning lady could've written better source code.

Uh no...I was just comparing the game contest for STO to the Contest you were in for the Luna Class. It was my understanding from the messae board that you served as a consultant to your design. That may not be the case for the Enterprise F contest because it's for a game that made have dictated parameters.

hmmm, according to the prize details the laptop is worth $1099, but looking at the dell website it sells for $599. Is the "custom paint job" where the other $400 in value comes from, or will the laptop actually not be the base model?

Maybe there is some features add to this one that hikes the price. It could be that there is stuff on the computer or in it. Then again it could just be the paint job.

I would imagine they would at the very least be giving away a computer that could play the game with a decent FPS. A 600-dollar entry-level laptop isn't going to cut it.
