Design the Next Enterprise

Okay, I retract my previous statement. Even the cleaning lady could've written better source code.

I'm not faulting the code in this case, as in some sort of error having occurred. I have a relatively low number of total votes compared to the frontrunners, so all it takes is a few votes with low star ratings to shift my average downward pretty dramatically. Just four, maybe five votes was enough to knock me from 6th place all the way down to somewhere below 45th and completely off the list.

What I find... odd... is the fact that I had been rising slowly but steadily in both vote count and rating until four or five people all decided to trash me in the span of less than 30 minutes yesterday afternoon. This phenomenon has been noted by others on the Star Trek Online discussion forums and elsewhere. If I were a bit more paranoid, I might suspect something deliberate was going on. The way the voting system is structured, it would be very easy to do.

Whatever the explanation, it's definitely annoying but I'm really not that worried about it. The passage of time and the accumulation of votes should work to even things out, at least to some degree, and I am reasonably confident that the entries will be judged largely on their own merits anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few dozen people have been conspiring to keep the competition out of sight as much as possible through negative voting.

Hopefully the final judges will realize just how terrible this system is and ignore the "will of the people" for the most part. Especially considering how many of the entries are clearly not original designs or even original content.

Looks like the Voting has finally closed on the Contest. I would like to thank any of you that voted for my design. I hope to see some of the other designs here in the top 25 (Vektor I t hope yours makes it to the next round, you came up with a really impressive design).

Maybe there is some features add to this one that hikes the price. It could be that there is stuff on the computer or in it. Then again it could just be the paint job.

I'm sure it'll also come loaded with every Cryptic title in their catalog, and all kinds of promo and trial software... in other words, stuff you'll just delete.

Best of luck to everyone who submitted. Even if my entry doesn't make it into the top twenty-five, I hope someone here manages to take home some cool schwag.

:)

Wow, Starship, No Errors? That IS amazing :P

If you want i'll send you over the full detail version. That one is optimized for printing after I got an error email the other day stating I had geometry that was too small (the points at the end of the pylons).

@Vektor:

If you wouldn't mind answering a few methodology questions:

What software are you using? Are you modeling with NURBS or Polys (I'm assuming those aren't subDs.)

I note you have exceptionally clean lines. Are you refining as you go?

Am I correct in thinking that most of your detail is physically modeled rather than dependent on bump or displacement maps?

How many hours did you spend on your entry?

Thanks very much :) Top notch work. I'd say your entry is the highest quality 3D model in the contest by a wide margin, but your presentations is a little lack luster. I'd much rather see her in an environmental setting, ideally guns blazing :)

Best of luck! I'll be looking for you in the top 4 :)

What's an IFV?

[edit]
Ah. "Infantry Fighting Vehicle" I still feel like I'm missing something.

I suppose "phasers blazing" would have been more appropriate.

I thought Vektor's entry was 2D/drawn?

Seriously? That doesn't seem possible, it's presented in mathematically perfect perspective.

[edit] Looking again, I do see strokes, I think I had assumed they were due to post-production touch-up. If it's not a 3D model it's possibly the most precise perspective drawing I've ever seen!

[edit] His models of the Grandeur and Vanguard are CG. This one must be too. You had me wondering for a minute though :p

[edit] Though checking out his site he's quite a sketch artist as well!

[edit] You might be right! I went back through this thread looking for wips (broken links!?!) and found this: "As of right now, I have no plans to model this ship in 3D" that was on December 4th, so...

I really ought to be able to tell, but the longer I look at it the less I'm certain.

I guess some of my questions still apply in either case, because the Grandeur and Vanguard are just as clean and precisely detailed.

I really wish I could see his wips, and I understand why he took them down, but maybe now that the entry period has ended he can re-post them?

Wow! Well I feel dumb. Serves me right for jumping to conclusions. That's amazingly impressive, but it does make me a little sad, as it means we're unlikely to see any other angles or animations. If he wins I say we demand that he model it for us and create an animation!

Yes I know one of the prizes is a 3D model of the design, but I'm assuming it will be the game model, which will be (by necessity) very simple compared to the detail Vektor can produce, and an Enterprise deserves the best!

(you can tell I'm a fan :p)

My entry was purely 2D, hand drawn on my Cintiq tablet in PhotoShop, but I'm flattered you were that convinced it was actually a 3D model. I must be getting better at linework and shading. ;)
