How hard was it for you, personally, when, in the middle of the show’s run, Jeri Ryan arrived on the set to play Seven of Nine?
Mulgrew: I found that that was hard, Jeri notwithstanding. Certainly, I could see with my own eyes that she was a va-va-va-voom and beautiful-beautiful bombshell of a girl. Sexuality was brought into Voyager, and that’s what I resented. I chose not to use sexuality. I thought that if Paramount and UPN and Rick (Berman) were being exceptionally prescient and brave, they would give a woman a shot at commanding without sex. “Can we do this without sex?” There are always other ways. So I resented that and I was hurt by the immediate, extraordinary attention given to this character. The numbers went up. And I thought, “Ah, you can’t argue with a business decision and you can’t argue with sex.” That’s just part of life, but all of that is very difficult for a woman, particularly an actress like me. But it had nothing to do with Jeri.


I truly love how honest Kate Mulgrew is.

Me too Udat.....afterall Kate wasn't too polite about it at the time. I recall a rather hostile and somewhat irate response from Kate. As much as I loved Kate as Janeway, she does regard herself as a bit of a diva and having an ego-bruising, sexy, attractive, voluptuous young thing coming into her show certainly wasn't in her script.

Personally, Jeri Ryan's arrival didn't bother me too much - I watch and enjoy Star Trek for the stories and moral fables, not the space adventure or, as someone else mentioned, the sex.

^^ Kate is either growing up or has learned to deal with her response to Jeri's arrival over the years.

I think it was the fan convention in Toronto, 2008 or 2009 that marked a real turning point in her response to the 7 of 9 storyline. When I heard it I said "finally", she's no longer taking it so "personally".

Agree JR - mind you, if I'd been in Kate's position at the time, I may very well have reacted in exactly the same way. When you take great pride in your work, it can be very confronting when they bring in someone else to bolster up your project.

I think the conflict between JR and KM was blown out of proportion by others--especially Wang, who seems to show up at every convention held. In order to keep talking, he had to think of something interesting to say that caught people's attention, so why not mention the tension he "sensed" between the two actresses? Could it have been that their scenes called for a contentious attitude? He wanted us to believe it was a tense, unhappy set, but everything I've read says otherwise. In fact, I think they might have had too much fun!

That was a really cool interview! I like Kate Mulgrew. I do wish that they would convince her to take over voicing the computer now that Majel Barrett's gone. She's just got the right stuff.

I was really ticked off when Seven first showed up, too, simply because of why she showed up. It took me years to really warm up to her character. I remember reading one of the earlier, slightly more scathing interviews with Kate and actually cheering her on.

I'm glad I gave Seven's character a second chance, though, and I am really happy Kate's kind of backed off in the last few years, too, in her interviews and con appearances. Those two were clearly professional enough to give us some great scenes together, regardless of their feelings or whatever was going on back then. So, kudos to 'em for being pros.

I'm suprised she hasn't seen STXI. Sounds almost like she's afraid it'll ruin all her good memories of being on Voyager. Or she's just sick of Star Trek

I think I just kept saying, “I will, I will,” and I didn’t. And there’s a reason why. I guess I just didn’t want to. Everyone said it was great and I’m sure it was. But… it’s a huge thing to be the captain in the Star Trek franchise. You get saturated. There’s a part of me that just wants to hold that in my memory, and it’s enough.

And some special kudos to Jeri... who IIRC never let a bad word slip re: Kate.

Hopefully that means Kate kept her mouth shut on the set and was sweet as pie, keeping her vitriole for the interviewer & the con circuit, or kept her mouth shut until the series was over, I don't know which it was, after all these years.

Jeri could have been a real diva, but I never got the feeling from Mulgrew that she portrayed one on the set.

As Jessica Rabbit said, "I'm not a bad girl, I'm just drawn that way".

The mere fact that a good portion of the audience sees a significant connection between those two characters, whether Mother/Daughter or Subtexted rivals means the ACTRESSES didn't let the events OR Mulgrew's feeling interfere with the work at hand.

JR - think about it. Actors at this level are way beyond letting rivalries interfere with performance. There are thousands of actors to choose from and quite capable of playing these roles - any hint of rivalries on set wont be tolerated by TPTB as it costs them time and more importantly, money.

I'm not saying rivalries don't exist - they surely do, but acting is just that - acting. And actors will act on and off the set and slipping in and out of character can be very easy for most actors.

I have a close friend who is an actor, mainly stage and in many major production in Australia. Sometimes, for fun, she slips into a character she has played and it's quite an experience to be that close to it - almost scary - and not like seeing the character in the play - the person you've know since childhood has completely gone.

Interesting point. I saw Keegan Delancie at a con in KC years ago (he played Q's son in Q2). He is also John Delancie's son (of course) and has known KM all his life. He said he found it scary to be talking to her before the shot and then see her slip into character--a completely new and different person. I would have loved to see that myself!

yes - I found it very scary. Seeing her on stage in a performance was fine, but when she did it away from the context of the play, it was very strange indeed. It's interesting that actors also pick up on this too - thought it was just me.
