Random celebrity encounters?

Yeah, I got a CD player in '88, and I was late in adopting that technology.

I don't really want to put a date on it but I'd really have to say 1988 was early for having a CD player.
Unless you were a rich kid in LA at the time.

Nope, CD players were well established by then. heck, I had one in 87 my senior year in Highschool.
I got a portable one in 1986 for Christmas. It was huge, imagine one of those portable cassette players times two. It worked off somethimgnlike 6 D size batteries. It also had this swanky leather protive case with carrying strap. What is funny I bought my first CD sometime that summer, long before I owned the CD player.

By early I didn't mean the date was wrong, but that they were common. To have one then would be early I think. Certainly not the kind of thing where everyone had one.

Met a lot of random celebrities workin' at two of the nicer hotels in Austin. Met quite a few at scifi cons & movie premieres, too.

Never really just happened to have bumped into someone famous out in the world, though...

I used to work in Balmain (Sydney suburb), and on my way to work I passed a coffee shop I sometimes stopped at. Sitting at the window was Steve Bisley (TV series 'Water Rats', Goose in 'Mad Max I'). They must have been filming WR nearby (saw the film crew setting up at a different time and place nearby) I smiled and nodded, he smiled and nodded. It was a moment.

If we're counting politicians then I have met Stephen Harper twice and Jean Chretien once.

Ha! My girlfriend at the time had one exactly like that. I remember that if you even looked at it funny it would skip.. That of course, didn't stop us all from "ooing and ahhing" at it.. I didn't get a CD player until '89 or '90 if I recall correctly.. I promptly joined Columbia House and half of the CD's I got from them wouldn't play properly. :(

When I used to manage a KB Toys back in the day some of my regular customers were:
Q-tip

The Sugarhill Gang
Spinderella (of Salt & Peppa)

I graduated from High School with major league baseball's Doug Glandville.
3 years ahead of Damon Lindelof(Writer and co-creator of LOST)

While I worked at WB:
Missy Eliott

I literally bumped into Michael Bolton at the Metropolitain Museum of History.
Met Dave Matthews at Newark Airport
Phil Simms in Pathmark
Eddie Vedder at Randalls Island Tibet Freedom festival.(His eyes are AMAZING in person)
Woody Allen & Suzanne Sarandon both on the same day, at the same time with their kids at St. Marks comics.
Bob from Sesame Street was one of my neighbors in High School.
Ronald Isley of the Isley Bros.( I went to school with his daughter Tia. She always had purple hair)
Brad Pitt while he was filming part of "Meet Joe Black" on 5th avenue.
Paul Sorvino & Tony Bennett, they both live one town over and Tony owns a recording studio by the railroad tracks.
Al Sharpton, he gets he's hair did at a beauty parlor in town.
Ellen Burstyn, at my current job.

My senior year of college, I had an upstairs neighbor named Laura. Kind of wealthy, but living in student digs. Used to come down for coffee, get candy because she'd forgotten it was Halloween, that sort of thing. Toward the end of the year, she brought her parents down to say hi. And that's when I found out that her mom was former Vice Presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferraro. (She used her father's last name.)

Also in college, I was doing a registration sign in with an alphabetical list. Give me your last name then first, I look it up on the list. Like, Smith comma John.

A classmate steps up, and I ask her name. Her name? Princess of Greece comma Alexandra.

A couple to throw out for you all:

Back in 2002, I had to go New York City to attend a trade show. One morning, I was walking in Manhattan. It was early in the day - probably 7:30 in the morning, and I was heading out for breakfast. I was alone on a block, save for a short guy walking toward me. As I passed him, something clicked in my brain, but it took a minute for the wheels to turn. I walked another 100 feet, turned and looked and said (quietly) "Newman!" - it was Wayne Knight. I couldn't quite place him at the time, for some reason. I didn't say anything to him (he was out of ear shot by that time).

Same trip, I was walking down the street, and was waiting on a street corner with Richard Masur. I just remember that he was tall.

Also, back in college I delivered pizzas and delivered to former Denver Bronco greats Haven Moses and Karl Meklenburg. Meklenburg ordered a lot, great tipper too.

I used to live near Denver and saw Mecklenburg coming out of an arcade/kid's joint.

Mr Awe

I ran into Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi from Karate kid)at the Forum in Los Angeles a long time ago (sometime in the '80's) as I was going to the circus with my grandmother. got his autograph as well.

I saw Hayden Panettiere at a restaurant last Summer. She was wearing these tight little white shorts.... I was going to say hello but chickened out.

If we're counting politicians then I have met Stephen Harper twice and Jean Chretien once.
If politicians are celebrities, then I have met a few:
-My pastor was giving the invocation when President Reagan came to Charlotte airport. He was campaigning for Bush #41. Since the pastor and I were already hanging out, he invited me to come along.
-At the same church, during Christmas Eve services I was ushering when a couple who seemed familiar came in. The fire marshall was not allowing anyone else inside, so I had them stand in the lobby (narthex). When the head usher saw it he chewed me out for making Senator Bob Dole and US Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole wait, because they had reserved seats next to the pastor's wife! I guess they felt bad about me getting in trouble because they invited me to dinner with them and pastor's family.

In my defense, I was a Republican back then.:alienblush:

I was thinking that I didn't have any and then I forgot about the random people at work.

So random encounters at work; Kevin Bacon, the New York Yankees, the Washington Nationals, the LA Lakers, Bob Dole and I was in the vicinity of the President.

While on vacation in London I almost walked into Geoffrey Rush as he came out of a toy store while talking on his cellphone. I swerved. He's tall!

I met one of the Spice Girls (I won't say which one) while visiting my friend at a rehab center years ago in Tucson.

My buddy went to rehab with Lindsay Lohan. Unsurprisingly, she was a total bitch according to him.
