The Ashes - 2010/11

Oh, and Botham can go and fuck himself. Anyone with a scintilla of intelligence - which explains his asinine remark, as he doesn't even have that much - could see that Philip Hughes didn't claim that catch. Arsehole.

Particularly bad timing after Bell's efforts with the DRS later in the day. Let's give Bell the benefit of the doubt and say he was 'exploiting the system to his full advantage' rather than 'cheating'.

Only one issue with the Hughes incident - why did he throw it in the air in celebration? A 22 year old kid in the heat of the moment under pressure can be forgiven I suppose.

Well, it's now official. Paul Collingwood's bowing out of test cricket after this match. Admittedly he was very disappointing this series, but over the years he has served England well in general. He's doing the right thing, I think.

I remember when he got plucked out of our local grade cricket on the 2003 tour to play for England. I was living in Melbourne at the time, and the crowds loved him because of his surname. I remember thinking he looked like an inoffensive journeyman who would last three games at the top level.

I reckon he's just as surprised as anyone that he played for a decade, won the Ashes three times and captained England to short form success. Grit, guts and pride in bucketfuls. Well played, 'MBE'.

India should win this test now if Kallis goes cheaply.

If. He made 109 last night, playing in agony with a side strain that had him taking regular needles from the medical staff, negotiating Harbhajan who had it spitting like a cobra. Two centuries for the match. Could be his crowning glory if the South Africans win this.

Let's hope the Aussie bats show a tenth of his skill, courage and determinaton today.

Apparently the first time ever in a test match that partnerships 6, 7 and 8 have all yielded 100+ runs.

609-9, looking like you'll be back in to bat pretty soon.

That Mitchell Johnson, his bowling is shite”

Taken out of the attack now after that over. Barmy Army not happy, chanting "We want Mitch, We want Mitch"......!

I'm listening to TMS: they're talking anagrams right now.

Andrew Strauss = sad urn wasters
Shane Watson = want no ashes

636/9 at lunch - England have now equalled their previous record for most runs in an innings in Australia. I wonder if they'll declare just now...

Watson, Watson, Watson...how often does he get involved in a run out? It seems far too often.

Interesting as I was in Woolies this morning, doing some shopping, in the daily tele there was an article from Shane Warne suggested 10 ways to improve cricket and bring up back to the top in this nation. Agree with 1,2,3,6,8,9,10. Don't really know about 7, but with 3 - no need to have pointless ODIs before a major series (ie ODI last year before Sri Lanka)

So true. He needs a long break before the test series to work on his action if I wants to stay in the squad.

And we lose another as my TV reception sucks more than Johnson's bowling action.

Re : Watson - well how do I put this delicately - ummm...no...:censored: it - he is as thick as two planks of wood. Quote of the summer on ABC radio : "No, Shane, my grandmother couldn't bowl you out; but I reckon she could run you out".

Re : Warney - all good commonsense stuff. I notice he's out of a job now, so he might as well get to work on his plan starting tomorrow. It will be a decade before we recover from this series. We'll need seven plus changes to get us competitive, let alone back to dominance.

I truly have no words to express how dreadful this side is.

Instead, I'll leave it to Mr Barf : :barf:

All but a handful of this lot should have the red pen put through them for good.

Spineless, pea hearted, overpaid, over-exposed, talentless, gormless bunch of arrogant wankers.

There is one positive though : we won't have to watch us get humiliated again till August. Thank god the winter series against Bangladesh was cancelled. I think they'd push us all the way.

3 innings defeats in a 5 test series. Humiliating.

What celebration? It looked more like an inadvertent reaction to a near thing, not a full-fledged celebration. Just Botham proving yet again what an utter fucktard he is.

Y'know, losing is one thing. It's part of life and has to be accepted.

What I can't accept is how gutless we've been in this series. With one or two exceptions here and there, it's been absolutely spineless stuff. In some ways, England can't take much out of this series; they've played well but we've been so poor they really haven't had to do much.

I'd also feel a bit better if any of the England bowlers was genuinely great. They're very good, but I can't see any of these blokes being acclaimed as an all-time great in a decade's time.

None of Siddle (trier though he is), Hilfenhaus or particularly the absolutely pathetic Johnson should ever play any kind of cricket for Australia again. They aren't good enough. Period. Watson is an imbecile; I suppose at least he sacrificed his own wicket this time instead of hanging his partner out to dry yet again. Haven't seen the rest. Don't want to. Thank God I was at work today while this tripe was being served up.

The bloated ego Warne hasn't said anything that anyone with a modicum of common sense couldn't work out. Of course, that means it will go straight over the (dick)heads at Cricket Australia.

What an embarrassment of a series. I really think this will be seen as a hollow victory for England in years to come.

Yeah, that's fair to say.

Before the series began I'd probably have said that I'd settle for retaining the Ashes, and then following that I'd just like to win the series, but having done both of those things I'd not rank this series as a greater triumph than the two home series wins in recent years, even though it's a win down under.

In 2003 we had to be at our best, and playing some briliant cricket to win that series. This time around we seem to have cantered to it, by just playing extremely solidly. I don't want to understate how well the team has played, they've played very, very well, but as you say, they've been helped a lot by Australia's wretched series.

India will probably provide a better yardstick of where we are right now when we play them later in the year.

Yeah, that's fair to say.

You can only play the 11 who turn up on the day, and you have cut us to shreds with a level of professionalism and skill I thought beyond you. Enjoy the win for what it is - a record breaking, historic slaughter of your (once mighty) old enemies.

Watch Tremlett I reckon. He looks pretty bloody scary. Anderson has staggered me with his level of skill. As I said earlier - he'd have to be the most improved player I've ever seen over such a long career. Even six weeks ago I wasn't sure he wouldn't get carted everywhere if it wasn't swinging.

England's biggest problem now is how to get Finn and Broad back into the side. I wouldn't be dropping Tremlett or Bresnan in a hurry.

Now, for some bad news for you English fans. I live a stone's throw from the SCG. It has not stopped raining for the last two hours. Heavy, drenching rain...

I wouldn't either. Given the strength of batting (all the way down the order), I'd probably use the space that Collingwood's retirement will create to bring in either Finn or Broad.

Providing it doesn't continue to rain for the next 13 hours, we should be alright! Probably only need an hour!

I thought a humid and overcast atmosphere was good for swing bowling...

^ Well it's sunny skies here in Newcastle, as we got some rain over night. I'm assuming play should start soon. I'll be glad when this season is over, as on a personal note I'm hoping the Eels play better rugby league than Australia played cricket this summer.

Grey skies and rain as far as the eye can see

Some of the highlights of this series, courtesy of SMH :
❏ First time Australia had three innings defeats in a series.
❏ First time a team had three innings defeats in an Ashes series.
❏ Second team ever to record three innings defeats in a series at home.
❏ First time a team had three innings defeat in a series since Bangladesh away to Sri Lanka in 2007, and second time in 17 years.

Here is the Herald's next Aussie Test XI :
S Marsh, S Katich, U Khawaja, R Ponting (c), M Hussey, S Watson, B Haddin, S O'Keefe, P Siddle, J Pattinson, M Starc.

Assuming no retirements, that looks a pretty good start for the rebuild I reckon.

Well played England. Thorough planning + ruthless execution.

There's no reason they can't challenge for the top spot, with the three Indian maestros in Tendulkar, Laxman and Dravid surely near the end, and South Africa's attack looks nowhere near as good or well rounded as England's.

Rumours of a few announcements re : immediate futures of certain Aussie players coming this afternoon.
