Post 10 Facts About Yourself

I dabbled in Facebook once, but never again. I view Facebook as a gross violation of privacy. Facebook's privacy controls, such as they are, are so hopelessly convoluted as to be useless. I decided that it's not worth the risk, not by a long shot. If somebody wants to talk to me, they know where to find me.

Also I must point out that there is a difference between simply deactivating your Facebook account and removing it. Deactivating an account is like turning off a T.V. - the shows are still in existence, you're just not looking at them. So it is with Facebook - if you deactivate your account, it's still there.

Actually permanently deleting a Facebook account is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Here's how to do it.

As for Twitter? Screw 'em. Nobody needs to know every little thing I do. If I spent all day 'tweeting' about the coffee I just drank or the baseball game I just watched or the blizzard that just hit, people would naturally assume that I was a moron with a narcissism disorder. Which may actually be true, but they don't need to know that.

Hmm lets see..

1. I like Star Trek.
2. I like Scifi
3. I have access to the internet
4. I am a member of an online forum called Trekbbs.
5. I just posted in a TBBS thread called "Post 10 Facts About Yourself"
6. Damn I was only able to list 6 facts in that post.

Codswallop! I can be antisocial all on my own, I don't need facebook or my cell for that.

Me too :techman:

And the fact that you think that's all that is on twitter shows you haven't been following the right people - I have mathematicians, scientists and authors on my list. :)

You're a very open guy, aren't you? Not afraid to reveal your mostly guarded and deepest secrets to the public. :shifty:

5. My favourite numbers are 2, 4, 7 and 8, which in my mind correspond respectively to the colours white, red, black and blue.
Do you have synesthesia?
I've heard of it, I think I may have a slight form of grapheme, but nothing major, nor excessively creative. ;)

This is my association.
1 blue, 2 red, 3 purple, 4 green, 5 light blue, 6 yellow, 7 white

When I realised I had this association, it took me a little while to work out why. It seems to be a learned association, all because of my exposure to this in my early years...

I'd like to do some sort of study with WoW players (that could be extended to other games) where I have players and non-players rank colors somehow. I'm curious if people who play a lot automatically have better associations with certain colors because of the gear levels.

Yes, this is the kind of thing I think about while playing videogames.

I imagine it works like all associative learning. Like 'press the left button when you see one thing, press the right button when you see another thing'.

We start off with those kinds of tests slowly, but then accelerate to almost instant speed as the association becomes imprinted. Then it's a question of retention, and why some associations go into long term memory.

For me that is easy: I used the computer with my brother's supervision, and one of the things he enjoyed showing me on it was simple programming commands, which usually involved changing the colours of the screen, and having to type the corresponding numbers in (eg, BORDER 6). Since the computer was the same each time we used it, knowing what numbers were what colours was a recurring need. :)

In a sense, in my early years while words were still relatively new things, "6" was being used as just another word for "yellow". A synonym.

And building upon that, we all do associate words with the colours, so is perfectly explained. :) Stroop test, anyone?

I have an acquired association as well, but it's based on the resistor color code.

I know just how you feel. I was actually kicked off Facebook for committing fraud. Long story short, I didn't, but couldn't prove it.

I never really wanted to be on that site anyway, I only created an account to shut up my friends who did have accounts and pestered me to try it.

The whole thing just seems pointless, particularly since all of those friends live right here in the same city and can see me live any time they want.

I well remember that from high school science. :)

It's not a dominant association for me, but I think if I was told 1-brown, 2-red, then I might revert to that association if asked about a different number... 3 certainly does feel like orange to me now, rather than purple. :)

Niorah, I was thinking about your association just now, and I think it may be related to writing letters and the sounds of those letters.

The number 2 and white share a couple of similarities: the hard T sound at the end of white, is like the hard T sound at the beginning of 2. They are also related because they both have the rare w in them.

Writing 8 requires writing a downward loop, and we sometimes think of the -OO- vowel sound when we do it. It's the same vowel sound as in Blue.

Writing 7 requires a making short straight strokes in different directions. Which feels similar to the short straight strokes in different directions made when writing k. Black is naturally associated with k because it ends with that letter and is rare.

With the digit 4, there is a similarity in feeling between writing the dominant R of red and the digit 4. In both cases we end up with a kite ~ a triangular shape with two tails.

I may have made all of that up imaginatively, or it may provide insight into your association.

1. I was named after a Robert Redford movie. That I have yet to watch all the way through, even though I have had several opportunities.

2. I have been involved in two long distance relationships, both involving me being on the wrong side of the Pacific Ocean. But it was a different side each time.

3. Choosing the major in college that I did (as well as the college itself) was a direct result of watching too many Godzilla movies as a child.

4. I have a strong aversion to being touched, particularly by people I do not know well. This makes my current job as an elementary school teacher a challenge at times.

5. I like muffins.

6. I am capable of being both deeply cynical and oddly hopeful, sometimes even at the same time. This never feels like a contradiction to me.

7. I am the founder of a moderately successful cult, which I got bored of and abandoned several years ago.

8. According to my parents, the first song I ever listened to outside the hospital was Paul Simon's "The Boy in the Bubble". Which I still enjoy.

9. I am quite hideous.

10. I enjoy being contrary, but only if it is completely unnecessary.

I like reading everyone's personal facts. This experience is quite enlightening and on a personal level, cathartic. :) Well, I've got a few more to share, though I've lost track of my count.

1. My blood sugar has been higher than normal when I wake up in the morning these past several days, even before breakfast. It's been ranging from 140s to 160s, and I don't necessarily eat anything heavy for dinner.

2. I woke up with a painful right shoulder/deltoids on Christmas morning, possibly the result of a muscle strain. The area still feels stiff especially when I lie in bed. So far, I've tried hot/cold skin patches, but we'll see if I need additional treatment.

3. I dread the day I return to work, which is tomorrow, 01.04.11. Being in the office isn't so bad all the time, but I hate getting up early, the commute, the traffic, etc.

4. I really think I need another vacation, a holiday after the holidays, away from it all. I wish I had more vacation time and disposable income to do so.

5. Last week I broke out in rashes as a result of an allergic reaction to eating a Vietnamese sandwich. I had that reaction before, but I don't know why on earth I ate it again.

6. The best thing about my staycation has been the opportunity to stay up late, sleep in, and catch up on my reading. I've enjoyed reading DC's 52 trade paperbacks.

7. I'm feeling rather lazy and/or depressed about going back to work, not that I hate my job. See #3.

8. I received a ton of movie tickets and gift cards for Christmas. The only movie I bothered to see was TRON Legacy.

9. I really hope that my overall outlook for 2011 will be better. 2010 wasn't bad, but there are things I've yet to do, places to go.

10. I need something to keep me motivated.

Interesting, but I have learned my numbers in Italian and my association goes back to my toddler years.

Due (2) and bianco (white) have nothing to do with each other, and neither have sette (7) and nero (black) or otto (8) and blu (blue), for example. And in case you're wondering, my fridge magnets did not correspond to the colours I associate the numbers with, all of them being mainly orange, yellow and green actually.

I guess in my case it's just grapheme, plain and simple.

So here are my 10 facts...

1. Evening is my favourite time of the day, and it never seems to last long enough.

2. I prefer to make than buy things, although it's not always practical due to insufficient time/energy/skill/resources.

3. I love Italo Disco. Proper music.

4. Winter is my favourite season, although the weather we had in december approaching -20'C some nights and -10'C during the day, was admittedly a bit scary.

5. I've never liked lunch hours, when people stop work. Supposedly free time, except it's not.

6. I have never travelled out of Great Britain, nor have I ever been to London.

7. I have an opinion about most things, and how things could be/should be. Much of the time, the world seems to drift in the opposite direction.

8. I never seem to have enough space to put my things. Buying an extra cupboard paradoxically seems only to have consumed more of my space.

9. Over the past few years I've become interested in how computer games work, and have managed to make some of my own. It's complex and challenging.

10. Despite being all grown up, I still enjoy a bag of sweets from time to time.
