NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Hehe, 538 about the Seahawks.

The Seahawks, moreover, were probably fortunate to be outscored by only 97 points. Measured by yardage, their offense ranked 28th of the 32 N.F.L. teams, while their defense ranked 27th. (Bizarrely, the San Diego Chargers led the N.F.L. in both categories, but finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs.) The Seahawks’ yardage differential — they were outgained by more than 1,100 yards this season, not counting special-teams plays — was the second-worst in football, ahead of only the Arizona Cardinals.
[...]
The more deeply one looks at the Seahawks, indeed, the worse they tend to appear: according to an advanced statistic known as Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, or D.V.O.A. — compiled by the geniuses at Football Outsiders — the Seahawks were actually the very worst team in the N.F.L. over the course of the regular season.

Now I'm totally rooting for them to win the Super Bowl. :D

Marty Mornhinweg has been linked to the Cleveland opening and may be a candidate in San Francisco, as well.

Was there a little-known amendment to the Rooney Rule that says teams have to interview a minority coach and a retarded coach during their searches?

The Rooney Role is a joke. It's tokenism and fulfills quotas. So the Cowboys have to bring in someone to interview that won't get the job in order for them to give the job to Garrett, even though Garrett is already the interim coach.

When the Seahawks named Jim Mora as Mike Holmgren's successor in the middle of the season, they didn't have to play that same game and Mora was still an assistant coach at the time.

The Seahawks got an exception because Mora's contract had specific language that said he would succeed Holmgren upon the latter's retirement.

You can go one of two ways on the Rooney Rule. Yeah, you can say it's tokenism, and there's an argument to be made that it's silly that the Lions had to fork out something like a quarter of a million bucks because they hired Mariucci outright instead of interviewing minorities, and it's silly that Ron Rivera has been used as a token interview candidate for years, but on the other hand, the percentage of minority coaches in the NFL is still in the single digits, and I really doubt that's due to a disparity in intelligence between the races.

The Rooney Rule could use revising (say, if a team and a coach file paperwork that they were each other's first choice all along, and that was the plan, then they get a waiver), but it isn't worthless.

Lovie Smith, Raheem Morris, Mike Tomlin, Leslie Frazier and Marvin Lewis... out of 32 teams equals about 15%. African-americans are about 13% of the American population.

I think the Rooney rule has run its course.

Quite possibly if the people doing the hiring fit in that category as well. Mornhinweg is offensive coordinator for a team with a good offense. To outsiders, it would seem to make sense.

They're hoping for the next Harbaugh (or I suppose Childress worked for a little while).

Has any NFL team ever conducted a search without interviewing at least one retarded coach?

A smart person would look at Philadelphia's offensive weapons in the present day, and the Eagles' offensive history prior to Mornhinweg.

Unfortunately, head coaching decisions are made by a group of people not generally considered to be the most football-intelligent people on this planet. There are reports coming out from the Browns saying that if Holmgren doesn't take the head coaching job, he wants a head coach who runs his West Coast Offense. At this point, that leaves Mariucci, Gruden and Mornhinweg. The Browns' best option is to promote Ryan to the head job and throw someone like Josh McDaniels in the offensive coordinator position ... but that will never, ever happen.

My predictions for this week:

New Orleans beats Seattle - Sure New Orleans is backing into the playoffs, but they beat Seattle at every position. It may not be a blowout, but the defending champs win.

Indy beats the Jets - I think the cool and collected Peyton Manning beats the young Mark Sanchez and we can hopefully stop hearing about Rex Ryan's wife's feet.

Baltimore beats Kansas City - Kansas City has just been too erratic.

Philadelphia beats Green Bay - This will be the closest game of the week, but Vick will outduel Rodgers.

New Orleans over Seattle (safest bet of the week)
Indianapolis over New York
Baltimore over Kansas City
Green Bay over Philadelphia

I think Rodgers and the Packers' defense will get it done.

Now that my heart rate has finally settled from the must-win game for the Packers against the Bears...

Last year I had nothing but confidence in Rodgers and the offense to get it done in the playoffs. I was pretty concerned about the defense despite a pretty high ranking. There just weren't enough bodies in the secondary after all the injuries and that game against the Cardinals was pretty ridiculous.

This year despite lots of injuries the defense has looked really good. A strong pass rush really works wonders. But, the offense is great at times and completely disappears at others.

Philly will be a tough game, but I think the matchups favor the Pack. We can win if the offense sputters but the defense can get hits on Vick... what we can't survive is another special teams debacle. We had a great game against the Bears on special teams for once, but overall it's one of the weakest units in the league. Hopefully Masthay has another good week because bad punts to Desean Jackson will be just as crushing as a bad punt to Hester could've been on Sunday.

It's a tough road as the #6 seed but I think this team is well built to hang with any of the NFC contenders.

Instead of reposting my picks, I'll just say this pretty much covers how I feel. Although I wouldn't be shocked to see the Jets actually pull one out against Indy.

As much as i hate to say this, I think KC really has no chance against Baltimore.

I would put a large sum of money against this happening. Not because it's Indy, but because it's a good team. I haven't recalculated to include week 17, but before that the Jets have only beaten 2 teams with winning records (NE and Pitt). If you take those two games out, their other 8 opponents have only won a combined 33% of their games, and several of those Jets victories came down to dumb luck. If the rest of the road to the Super Bowl goes through good teams, the Jets should just get off at the next rest stop and turn around.

Well this is just wonderful. It seems our local NBC affiliate and our one and only cable affiliate are in a dispute and as of this morning we no longer have access to NBC. And I live in a condo so I can't put up an outdoor antenna and I'm far enough away from the NBC affiliate that I'm guessing an indoor antenna may not work either. So no Saturday playoffs for me this weekend.

Thanks Mediacom. Greedy bastards.

Split the cable wire coming into your house. Run one to the cable box and the other directly into your TV's RF port. Then rescan for over-the-air channels.
