Beeb's Outcasts coming soon

Watched a really excellent stylish Italian-set new cop show with Rufus Sewell and afterwards there was a plug for Outcasts. They didn't give a date but it must mean it's within a fortnight or so.

As I've stated elsewhere, British tv drama rarely floats my boat, however, I am cautiously looking forward to Outcasts. Mainly, it has to be said, because I'm looking forward to seeing Jamie Bamber in something spacey again. :)

Well it's got a nice cast, and I'm a sucker for that Earth 2 other planet stuff so I'm looking forward to it. I just hope it isn't embaressed to be sci-fi!

Well so far it's had Hermione Norris saying "It's not sci-fi, it has those elements but it's more about the characters and it's proper drama. Maybe it's a new genre"... Which made me want to punch someone.

^^ Thing is though, you could have said that about Earth 2 really, and I loved that show.

Judgement reserved for now, but cautiously optimistic. :)

It really fucks me off, when people go round trying to make out because its sci-fi, its not proper drama.
What is proper drama anyway?

Hell's teeth! Isn't this the thing that we have to live through with authors occassionally? "Oh, it has science fiction elements to it.... but it isn't science fiction." You know what, love? If it quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck it's a f*ckin' duck.

Thank you. Rant over.

:cardie:

I really hoped Children of Earth might have proven that sci-fi can be proper drama!

I Sky plussed Zen and didn't see the Outcasts trailer. D'oh! I've had an interest in it, as Ashley Walters, who I slightly know, is in it.

OT, do you have a Zen thread, Sugar Plum Fairy?

Is she angling to get hired at the SyFy channel? She sounds like Bonnie Hammer the previous President or the new guy in charge talking about how shows aren't really "Sci-Fi" and more about characters and drama and interaction. It's like Sci-Fi is a dirty word. Which is damned sad because so many progressive ideas that society has since come to accept or adapt to which IMO has improved society often have first been presented in Science Fiction.

I do wonder if these are the actual feelings of the actor involved, or just what the BBC PR department have told em to say so as not to put the norms off!

I never had understood the difference between TV and film in this respect, in tv sci-fi is a dirty word (or two) yet the majoritry of the cinematic blockbusters are either sci-fi or have fantastical elements? I guess its the difference between watching a 2 hour film and comitting to a 13/22 part series but it still bugs me!

It's the reason why most sci fi is cinematic. A one-off with bells, knobs and whistles is relatively easy to get commissioned.

It's kind of weird, though, that the BBC would be so cautious about calling it sci-fi. After all, one of their most successful shows is a sci-fi show (Doctor Who). Outcasts sounds interesting.

It's because explosions sell. On a movie budget you can do 2 hours of explosions and fill the seats. On a TV budget you can't fill each episode with explosions. Therefore the mainstream audience tunes out and the highbrow critics can say science fiction is for geeks.

Yeah I know, its the same way it annoys me that Star Wars (with a lets be honest fairly simple story) is cool, whilst Trek, which often actually makes you think is 'geeky'

^ I remember Liam Neeson, circa The Phantom Menace, trying to tell an interviewer that Star Wars wasn't sci-fi 'because it was set a long time ago.' So apparently it was historical after all ...
