Darth Vader knowing Luke is his son

I'm still hung up on the whole implausibility of Anakin and Padme not knowing she was pregnant with twins.
This is a huge problem with ROTS, unfortunately. Obviously they're keeping the pregnancy a secret so she never saw a single doctor. But SURELY there's some self-diagnosing technology out there! You mean to tell me she never got pre-natal exams? Isn't that terribly irresponsible to the child's health?

Heh. Apparently life imitates art. After all, the real Padme-- Natalie Portman--apparently has problems understanding reproduction too.

^ I don't think that was a necessary comment. I wander where Set Harth is since we're discussing the prequels as well.

I am aware that there are some Expanded Universe stories out there that make out Vader was already fully aware of his relationship to Luke.

Simple...

The Expanded Universe is a total mess and Lucas should of called it the AU not EU. Seriously its such a fucking mess its unbelievable really.

I've heard suggestions that Luke was made relatively visible as a distraction. The logic goes like this: Basically, you hide Leia deep. You erase every trace of her parentage. (Maybe Bail's wife had just miscarried and no one knew it yet, so everyone thought it was her own child.)

You then hide Luke out in the open and relatively easy to locate. No one has a reason to think Padme's offspring survived (and Anakin has active reason to avoid Tatooine), but just in case they get suspicious, you give them something to find. If they do find him, they have no motivation to look further and Leia is still safe.
Very plausible, and smart. :rommie: Poor Luke, I hope he never realized he was being tossed out like chum to the sharks so that his sister would be safe.

Then again, maybe there were enough clues about the kids' temperaments to make an educated guess which one would be more likely to become, or more dangerous as, a Sith. Nice, sweet Luke vs. hell on wheels Leia? Yeah, I'd probably toss Luke to the wolves, too.

Then again, this is the same woman who thumbed her nose at the Jedi rules about no-attachments. Was she so arrogant to think she knew better than all the Jedi about what was good for them? Maybe she figured those silly rules didn't apply to her and her husband, who was a teenager and not a particularly mature one at that?

I hope for their sakes, Luke and Leia never learn very much at all about the 'rents. Talk about embarrassing!

Eh, a 30 year old woman with plenty of cash and a thriving career can have a kid on her own, if the guy in question doesn't want to stick around. She probably just didn't care whether she got pregnant and/or married - either way, she's covered. It's nothing compared with Padme's epic irresponsibility. And for an actress to be irresponsible is a lot more expected than a so-called politician who is supposed to be doing the right thing for the people she's representing, not frakking everything up royally with her out of control private life that leads to the destruction of democracy across an entire galaxy for decades to come!

I always thought that the re-dubbed Emperor scene in TESB made Vader an infinitely more interesting character. OF COURSE he already knows who Luke is! He spent the first half of the film ordering all his underlings to "find SKYWALKER". Then he plays dumb with his boss? Why? Did he want to get to Luke first? Maybe he needs Luke to overthrow Palpatine, since he's no longer able to physically do it on his own. But, does he want to do that because deep down he want's to redeem himself? Or, does he still secretly harbor the ambition to rule on his own?
I think it's amazing that the re-dubbing of a few lines can make a character so much more complex. Unfortunately, Lucas neuters Vader so badly in ROTJ, reducing him to 2-dimensional status.

I understand that Lucas will do a little more work to tie the OT into the prequels when he releases the 3D editions. For example, during the trench scene in Episode IV, as Vader bears down on Luke's X-Wing but just can't get a lock, Vader's line will be changed to: "This one has a high midochlorian count!"

I understand they're also filming some more scenes of Vader ordering transportation. Should be teh awesome

Well Anakin knew he had a son for years and couldn't find out who it is over the years.

Did he? He was told he killed her in his rage, not that she gave birth then died. And during her funeral she still looked pregnant; they were hiding the evidence she gave birth.

I think that for some time Vader knew Luke was his son. I also think he subconsciously at least felt some kind of connection to Leia as think he could easily have broken her under torture on the Death Star, he's a ruthless Sith Lord after all.

Of course, this only works if the searchers don't know there were twins.

Is this why they hid Luke with a man who want around doing his daily business dressed as an outlawed and reviled Jedi knight? ;)

He doesn't feel Kenobi's presence straight away.

It's amazing he never really meets the Droids in the sequels. Would he still have shot at R2 in the X-Wing had he known ?

3P0 was on Chewie's back in the carbon freezing chamber when Vader dunks Han. Why do you think that 3P0's parts were returned to Chewie and he was allowed to keep them? Vader saw his old creation and gave it back to them to be repaired.

I wish someone would make a virus which would infect every computer on the planet and make it impossible to type "midichlorian" onto the screen. Then we could pretend it never existed! :p
