NBA 2010-2011

Freakishly large people off all nationalities tend to be known for being brittle. Yao has way more talent, but a good comparison for durability is Shawn Bradley.

I don't remember so many other NBA players with this type of problem though.

But I don't follow the NBA to such an extent as I do the MLB or NFL.

Too true, but certainly some in the 7' range, which is still up there.

And I don't want to start a race riot, but I wonder if the Chinese are more likely to have calcium deficiency. Then add to that a 7' 6" guy.

My point was to bring up Shawn Bradley, who is of similar height and built, although not of skin tone. He was even more injury prone. He was also a crappy player, so nobody set out with the intention of injuring him. Yao Ming has at least some Basketball skill, so people foul him hard if he goes towards the basket.

In addition, there's another player, Zydrunas Ilglauskas who is 7'3 and has been plagued with injuries recently. Even Shaquille O'Neal has struggled with injuries recently and he's built like a tank. Injuries are common to all big men. And there's a huge difference between 6'10 and 7'6, so those injuries scale as people get taller.

I'm really thinking more about the stress fractures, which Yao has had at least twice.

Not to mention other bone related problems, breaks & fractures.

I know Shaq has had a lot more muscular problems, especially in the back, which like you said, aren't that far out for someone that large.

Well, Z has had foot injuries. I'm not sure if they're bone or muscular problems, though. The point is people that tall and that thin are going to have injury issues, especially if they're good enough to warrant people trying to foul them.

Bill Walton spent most of his career fighting stress fractures. He is American and white.

Yao's problem is that he is not just tall but well proportioned. If he were tall but real skinny he might not be having the fracture problems. He is just too heavy although because he is well proportioned, he does not look "fat".

If I recall correctly, Grant Hill had stress fracture problems for a good portion of his career and he is not Chinese or a 7 footer.

Al-Pharazon - how many other 7 foot or over Chinese players have you known of who had stress fracture problems?

Like I said, I'm not a wealth of NBA info, so that's why I asked.

Without delving into Yao's history, it just seems there have been a lot of bone related problems for the poor guy.

Yeah, but it doesn't have to do with his race, as we've pointed out. It sucks for him, but he's not unique in this regard.

Really, really tall and large men are prone to that. That's a hell of a big body putting constant pressure on Yao's joints and tendons with the pounding of intense NBA games and practices factoring in. It's no surprise.

Good Lord, the Lakers are looking terrible. Getting whupped at home by the Bucks? Then the Heat come to town and completely dominate?

Come on!

:scream:

Two quotes from Lebron James:

"Imagine if you could take Kevin Love off Minnesota and add him to another team and you shrink the [league]. Looking at some of the teams that aren't that great, you take Brook Lopez or you take Devin Harris off these teams that aren't that good right now and you add him to a team that could be really good. Not saying let's take New Jersey and let's take Minnesota out of the league. But hey, you guys are not stupid, I'm not stupid, it would be great for the league."
"That's crazy, because I had no idea what the word 'contraction' meant before I saw it on the Internet. I never even mentioned that. That word never even came out of my mouth. I was just saying how the league was back in the '80s and how it could be good again. I never said, 'Let's take some of the teams out.' "

God, what a moron.

Not exactly toeing the player's union line, is he?

It'd be like me saying, "Hey, we don't need as many engineers here at this engineering company. Let's close the place and send our best folks to other companies!"

I totally think he did the right thing going to Miami, but his contraction comments were dumb as hell.

Not much basketball talk this season, eh?

Well, let's just note that the Lakers seem to have righted the ship. Today's destruction of San Antonio was a thing of beauty.

:techman:
