Space Battleship Yamato

Apparently there are a few US distributors already looking to get their hands on this movie.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this will be in the right hands.

As soon as you find out, please post any info that we can give to our local theaters!

By interested US Distributors did they mean a limited theatrical or a BD/DVD release?

It's been a long time since I've seen Star Blazers (and I may have the details wrong), but I've always had a question...

Queen Starsha sends the plans for the Wave Motion Engine to Earth so they can get the Cosmo DNA machine which will repair the planet, which they only have a year to do.

Why didn't she simply send the plans for the Cosmo DNA?

Now that is a good question.

I think Star Trek Starfleet starships need to be equipped with the WMG wave-motion gun, because the phaser banks and photon/quantum torpedoes have limited destructive abilities.:vulcan: Just think how different Nemesis would have been if the 1701-E had a WMG.;)

I saw it this weekend here in Tokyo. I know nothing about the original TV show, but I enjoyed the movie more than I expected. I was constantly reminded of the new BSG in the special effects (generally good with very fast fighters firing long, arcing tracers; the warp jump effect looked like the Stargate effect with a plume of water at the end), costumes (olive drab tank tops and red coveralls for the engineering crews), sets (gritty, including crew racks), lighting (dark), camera work (lots of hand held), and some scenes (someone gets tossed in the brig, an enemy fighter is brought aboard). The themes were VERY Japanese, though, stressing duty and sacrifice. I think I might go see it again.

^ Would it be a good idea to see the anime before hand? Like I said up thread, I have never seen it, but this movie looks really cool and I want to make sure I get the full experience.

I watched it over the weekend and i'm sorry to say I wasn't all that impressed. I felt it lost a lot of the magic and soul that made the series great and became more of a generic sci-fi movie.

Saul I felt the same way - uneven special effects, a "small" TV movie/special feel, WTF moments throughout like only 5 Space Marines and 6 fighter craft, BSG inspired effects left and right, the Gamilons were just bad and pretty much sank the movie for me. On the positive side, the costumes, the cast, some of the sets (though they felt small), a majority of the ships were spot on, as was the music - except for the Steve Tyler Armageddonesqe theme song, and the space battles though far and few in-between. My wife hated it (She loves BSG & Trek) and I just felt it was meh...BTW the marketing centers around the main actor which to me is kinda bizzaro to the point that the posters pretty much show his mug and nothing else.

I wish I could have seen it...I'd probably go twice.

News: Live-Action Yamato Earns 943 Million Yen in 5 Days

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-12-06/live-action-yamato-earns-943-million-yen-in-5-days

The live-action film adaptation of the science-fiction anime Space Battleship Yamato was seen 791,012 times on its way to earning 943,995,550 yen (about US$11.4 million) in five days. The film's distributor TOHO made the announcement on Monday. The film was seen 412,129 times and made 528,215,150 yen (US$6.4 million) during the December 4-5 weekend alone, which put the film at #1 on the weekend box office chart.

For much of the last decade and a half, the lead actor was considered Japan's "most desirable man" by Japanese women. He's still very popular. So, featuring him heavily in advertising is understandable, even if we geeks don't quite get it. It's kind of like having a giant floating head of Brad Pitt on US movie posters.

I get it (I always thought Kimura was perfect for the Susume role if anything else for that anime hair he has) just found it bizzare that it's only his mug and no Yamato, seemed kinda strange...but I guess it's working as the movie seems to be making it's money back. BTW I think a Zardoz sized Pitt head floating around would be scary as hell :)

Wow - 11+million in 5 days = major hit in Japan. Now I understand why Japanese films have such a comperatively low budget.

Personally I think not knowing who Kimura is might have increased my enjoyment of the movie. Instead it's Kimura who saves the world, not Kodai.

The US population is 2.3 times that of Japan, and an average American goes to the movies at least 4 times more often than an average Japanese. So if you multiply by around 10, you get the relative size of the box office total for the US. In the US, that would mean about $110 million in 5 days. Not too shabby.

I think I read that the budget for this movie was 2 billion yen, so they made about half back in a week. Again, not shabby.
