Space Battleship Yamato

I preface this by saying that I would pay to go see it if I lived in Japan and will buy a Blu-ray as soon as its available:

I wonder how long before a sub-titled version is on BitTorrent? Really dying to see this film... think I've been anticipating it more than I did Star Trek 2009.

Count me in as someone who would love to see a Starblazers live action TV series... but done by people who would know what to do... aka, NOT SyFy.

I hope that we're to the point that if it is remade... we can drop the Star Blazers name.

NEW? That's back in September.

Everything in post #20 is the latest behind the scenes footage, clips, and interviews.

I'd still like to see an english dubbed or sub-titled version of the 12/09 Yamato Rebirth animated film (although I read it didn't do too well BO wise); and heck, WHERE'S the opening theme in that Trailer? Needs something like this:

;)

I'm so glad Starblazer's getting the adaptation it deserves (from what it looks like). Makes me sad though to think of other Japanese properties that may not be so lucky...

Is this to be in theaters, or direct-to-DVD?

When is it due?

(crickets chirping)

Hello?

One of the first movie reviews are in the link below. So far there isn't a release date for the US, but the chances are good it'll get released here.

The subtitled version was produced for the AFM festival so that prospective distributors would know what they were looking at. If a distributor picks up the film, they could then choose to either keep the existing subtitles, create new ones, or make a dub. There is no word yet of a US pickup, but the representative I spoke to said that interest was strong.

This is not the "big unknown," however. That lies with the Japanese production committee that controls the marketing and must say yes to a US deal. If in their eyes the deal does not live up to their idea of the film's prestige, they can turn it down. Keep in mind, this is the most expensive Japanese movie ever made and they're not going to hand it over to just anyone.

I hate to be nitpicky but Space Battleship Yamato is NOT Star Blazers. Star Blazers is a toned down edited safe for kids and families version of Space Battleship Yamato to air weekday mornings back in the late 70's. I'm pretty sure Voyager Entertainment (they own the rights to Star Blazers) has nothing to do with this live action movie. They're almost separate series like Robotech and Macross except Yamato had enough episodes so when they adapted it they didn't have to mash it together with other unrelated series like Robotech and Voltron. As far as I know the only live action adaptation of Star Blazers was the attempt with Disney that was shelved.

You are right, Star Blazers is the revised for U.S. market version of Space Battleship Yamato, as Battle Of The Planets is a revised version of Gatchaman. I am just happy to see a live action version of Space Battleship Yamato, it's the closest that we are ever going to get to Star Blazers, for now.

Well, not entirely safe for kids. They cut out the doctor's alcoholism and the robot's constant sexual harassment of Yuki/Nova (as well as her gratuitous seminude scene in the first hyperspace jump), but the violence and death remained pretty much intact. I don't think it would've been possible to dub or edit it in a way that eliminated death from the story.
