Need series advice

So I want to get into a star trek series, but I dont know which one. I grew up with various star trek always on the tv, so I'm decently familiar with TNG, and have watched lots of Voyager but I kinda want to try a new one. I'm sorry but I dont want to watch TOS (I've tried it, its not my thing).

Im down to watch TNG, DS9 or Enterprise. I want some opinions on the matter

I have never watched any DS9 whatsoever so I'm leaning towards it.. I also plan to watch it starting from episode 1 and continuing on

Be careful where you say you don't care for TOS. Certain people might come in telling you how terrible your taste is for having a different opinion.

I heartily recommend DS9, especially if you want something new. It's the one TV series out of all 5 that isn't set on a ship, and if you stick out the meidocre-but-sometimes-great S1 and go forward, you're in for a treat. If you're fairly familiar with TNG, it's also not a bad place to go next.

DS9 is probably your best bet, then. Shame you don't want to watch TOS - no idea why as I think its the best (but then I grew up watching TOS when it was still called "Star Trek" and was the only act in town).

Its not that I hate TOS
Ive watched episodes of it, and love the cast. I love the first few trek movies as well (wrath of khan of course)

I just want to try something a bit more modern.. its lame but it kinda appeals to me I dont know why.

Looks like i'll try DS9

I would go with TNG:) ---- TNG:) was and is one of the best of TREK:techman: as of today's date. When TNG was on the air, STAR TREK as a whole was very popular and was doing well in the ratings as well. DS9 WAS MADE to a much darker form of TREK and should be watch after you finish watching all 7 seasons of TNG, then followed by Enterprise.:techman:

Not lame at all. You just know what you like.

I'd say TNG, but you probably want to go ahead and skip the first two seasons.

As much as I love TOS, my top two favorites are TNG and DS9, so I'd say go with them. Only, don't watch them back to back, that can get confusing.

To echo several other sentiments on this thread, I would watch DS9, it's different enough from all other Trek that it doesn't tend to retread over what had previously been done. Something that I feel Voyager did often.

That said, DS9 takes a little while to find it's legs, just as TNG took until season 3 to find it's legs.

Seriously, you could go either way and not be disappointed.:techman:

I think i'm going to start at season 3 of TNG. I watched most of the first season a few months ago and a few episodes of season 2..

Can you guys let me know if i missed anything big that I should go back and watch?

If you're watching The Next Generation, you should really watch from the beginning as the series undergoes quite an evolution.

Some highlights:

Where No One Has Gone Before
The Battle
The Big Goodbye
Datalore
11001001
Too Short a Season
Coming of Age
Heart of Glory
Skin of Evil
Conspiracy
The Neutral Zone
The Child
Where Silence Has Lease
A Matter of Honor
The Measure of a Man
Contagion
Pen Pals
Q, Who?
The Emissary

Though Star Trek: The Original Series blows the other series outta the water! :p

While DS9 is a great series in its own right, it is not a very good intro to modern Trek. Also, a lot of the characters and background stories from DS9 get their start in TNG, so one might get a little lost starting without that background.

TNG isn't dark, war-driven, or serialized like DS9 is, it's (IMHO) much easier to just jump right into and is more representative of Trek overall.

So.... to summarize, I say start with Next Gen

Maybe you should take a look at the TOS remastered episodes since the FX were updated to modern Trek levels. Some of the TOS stories are classics and are missing the heavy treknobabble that some of the modern Trek stories depend on to get out of a problem. I think that is what hurts alot of the modern Trek stories.
Other than TOS, I am a big fan of DS9 and Enterprise, I enjoy some of TNG but do not like Capt. Picard's command by committee style where he spends 10 minutes of a story sitting in the ready room discussing a problem when Kirk, Sisko, Archer, and even Janeway would discuss it maybe for a minute and then get things done. Then in TNG movies they tried to turn Capt. Picard into a action hero after spending seven years having him think or discuss his way out of most situations.
