Nobody owns Star Wars!

Are you sure it will only be a year? They haven't announced a date yet. If you care that much about SW, I'd buy the DVDs now. You can probably get them for cheap.

If SW ever makes it to Blu-Ray, *then* start worrying. But that could take years. NOTHING is ensured until and unless they start showing up on store shelves. Until then, it's all vaporware.

We will probably sooner get the LOTR Extended cuts on Blu before SW anyway. And those haven't been announced either.

I thought they were supposed to come out next November. Or is that just a rumor?

Nothing has been announced for a specific date as of yet. So effectively it does not count.

There is a press release on Starwars.com, but as I said, it doesn't count - since it doesn't mention a specific date. It only says "Fall 2011". So I wouldn't put too much stock in it. If they give a date, then you can plan around that. But if all they're willing to say is "fall", then why bother?

Well, the last time I watched Star Wars was back in 2004, so it's hardly like I'm missing it. We just want to make our friend watch it.

I bought the OT on DVD in 2004, there a story behind it involving death, a 70 million euro building site, a man crying and a bribe.

They might be on Pay-Per-View. I know all the Star Trek movies are, but I didn't notice if they have Star Wars, because I couldn't care less. :rommie:

I bought Star Wars on DVD the day it came out in 2004, no question. And I got the Prequels as they came out. The only DVD I don't own is Clone Wars Vol 2 since it's embargoed but I have the episodes on VHS taped off the tv.

I probably would have never bought the films, but I bought all 6 movies at a pawn show for $12. It was probably the most thifty/nerdy day of my life.

So we have this friend. We learned a few weeks ago, much to our dismay, that this friend has never see Star Wars. We decided that this must be rectified, so we were going to make her watch it tomorrow.

One problem...

Nobody owns it on DVD! I have asked 20 or so people, and nobody has it.

Oh, we all own the Trilogy that came out VHS way back when, but nobody has a working VCR anymore. In the interim, none of us ever bothered to upgrade to the DVD (I'm guessing most of us were unimpressed by the "improvements" Jucas made when he re-released them). And now, most of us who do want to buy it are waiting for the Blu-Ray.

So here we are, a bunch of nerds with no Star Wars. I'm tempted to buy the trilogy tomorrow, but I don't really know if it's worth the money since I'm just going to buy the Blu-Rays a year from now.

Ted Moseby has a copy, ask him

I think it's friggin' hilarious that for years people were crying about the Special Editions and demanding Lucas release the originals on DVD. Then...he did. And years later, people are still demanding that the originals be released!

It kinda' shows the true colours of the SE/PT/Lucas haters, as far as I'm concerned.

Sad thing is, I bought the originals, because I did want to have a copy of them, but they're still in the plastic. They're there if I ever want to watch them, but so far, I prefer the SE version.
I guess I'm a blasphemer.

More a simple lack of awareness on my part at least (was it advertised all that much?). I'll definitely look into getting them now, about £15 at current prices.

I don't think the problem is that he released the originals, it's that the originals are treated like special features-non-anamorphic/low resolution, old transfers. What fans would like would be an anamorphic, digitally restored version without the SE changes.

I wonder if there's anybody wanting the 97 special edition versions, which lack Naboo, have Luke's scream, and the crappier Jabba. Or even the original versions of TPM, AOTC and ROTS which differ from the DVD versions (TPM has a longer pod race, AOTC has some dialogue changes and one extended scene, and ROTS removes one of the wipe edits).

For awhile now, I had the original trilogy on VHS and the prequel trilogy on DVD. It's only been recently that I've started getting the original trilogy on DVD (once I have Episode VI, the circle will be complete)...

They were treated as "special features," accompanying the 2004 DVD versions when those were released as separate editions rather than in a box set.

Huh, I guess my brain works different that everyone else because I expected this thread to be a startling announcement that due to esoteric legal reasons, George Lucas has lost the rights to Star Wars and they are now in the public domain. Shoot.

PS, I own no Star Wars movies either, but I'm not really a big buyer of stuff anyway. JJ Abrams' movie was the first Star Trek DVD I've ever owned (yes, including all the TV series too). :D

I've probably seen the original Star Wars less than everyone else in this thread. I'm not even certain of the count, but it would be no more than 4 or 5 times.

Sorry, I should've said a decent modern anamorphic transfer. I don't even consider a non-anamorphic transfer a release these days no more than I would a pan-and-scan copy. I'll refrain from taking the bait on the rest of the statements.
