Rank of Doctor

It's somewhat like what Potter gave Hawkeye to boss around Charles in the Operating theatre because his rank did not reflect his skill as a meatball surgeon.

Actually, it was Henry making Hawkeye the Chief Surgeon over Frank. First season, fourth episode, "Chief Surgeon Who?" ;)
Glad I'm not the only one who wanted to get that nitpicky. :D

M*A*S*H provides a good example of the medical world operating by different rules in another way as well. In the rest of the camp, Major Houlihan outranks Captain Pierce. But in surgery, he's a doctor and she's a nurse, so she follows his orders.

Somehow I have been living in a MASH free world for the last half decade since I began watching TV exclusively on the internet, so I am drawing upon 20 year old memories mostly.

It was clear that Frank outranked Margaret, but she had to have seniority over Charles that i had to wonder if there were many if any episodes where Hotlips was in Charge especially after they mutineered against Frank?

Frank was only a major, just like Hot Lips, she just deferred to him because that's what women did in the '50's.

The ECH has Pips.

Four of them.

He thinks he's Captain.

But he has to fight a bloody Ensign every inch of the way to see his orders carried out.

Though it was more humiliating for Kim that Chuckles was treating Kim and the ECH evenly/equally when they were putting their ideas up to a lieutenant commander in Workforce.

Isn't the fact that there is a command hologram evidence enough that the Doctor cannor order anyone around unless it's medical?

Makes me think of DS9---Kira was XO of the station, and Worf was XO of Defiant.

Unless Kira was aboard the Defiant... then Worf sat in the back and kept his mouth shut.

In season 3 of Enterprise, Phlox, a civilian doctor, ordered Trip to bed for four hours (I think the episode was called Damage)

If I recall, Trip had command because Archer was a prisoner of the Xindi and Phlox Horsetraded a bucket of exasperation for ever minute his new captain agreed to retire.

Kira would have to have been given Starfleet Rank, or a treaty between the Federation and Bajor allowed for the intermingling of their "militaries" or the Defiant was "on loan" to the Bajorans since it was detached form a Bajoran Station not a federation Station which meant that it was serviced and supplied by Bajoran resources.

The big bad warrior was probably just afraid of her?

That's not particularly germane to the question of whether or not a Starfleet Emergency Medical Hologram has a commissioned rank. It does, however, again underscore position - as CMO of Enterprise NX-01, Phlox had the medical authority, under Starfleet regulations, to issue medical orders.

See the Defiant Hierarchy thread in the DS9 forum for some interesting thoughts on the Worf/Kira Defiant situation.
