USS ENTERPRISE HAYNES OWNERS MANUAL (Part 3)

^ That's what it kind of resembles I must admit and I do understand the outcry of the purists but considering that we're never going to get another book along the lines of "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual" again I'm up for supporting this. Maybe if this enjoys high sales that they're produce a second volume that will have other ships and starbases like Deep Space Nine.

^

Oh, I totally support the book, and like I said, I can enjoy it very much, just for the artwork. But I wouldn't use it as a source of accurate information. Plus, I'm a little ticked that some of the images I saw FROM the book, are not actually IN the book.

I'll have to see if it's at the local B&N and give it a look-see, but at this point, the main selling point is the simple novelty of having a Haynes manual on the ship, sitting next to the Haynes manual for my car. Not sure if that's worth the cover price.

Or maybe it'll send the message that fans don't care about accuracy and they can slap Star Trek on whatever they like and it'll sell?

Do you really think that they will associate low sales with "not accurate enough to satisfy hardcore purists"?

The casual fans aren't the ones picking up these books. They may pick up a novel if it looks interesting but are much less likely to drop $20-30 on a hardcover tech manual. The hardcore fans are the ones who'll pick it up even if it's just to be a completist.

This is an excellent example of why - far from being "more discerning" - the hardcore are understood to be the part of fandom that can be taken for granted by the Franchise: most of them will buy whatever the name "Star Trek" is stamped on.

Not me. I am partial to Star Trek art and technical books, but I don't usually buy much else.

I would still be very interested to know, though, from someone associated with this book, just WHY images posted online that are supposed to be from the book, are not actually included IN it. I mean, I based part of my decision to buy the book based on what I saw, and now I find out that I did not get ALL that I thought I was paying for.

I can deal with inaccuracies and all that... but when I am misled about stuff... that really irks me.

Looked at the book today in B&N. It reminds me more of a children's book. I was expecting something with at least double the pages, more on the lines of an actual Haynes manual in size. Not worth the money in my opinion.

NOWHERE in the actual book, did I see the pictures of the communicator and tricorder from TOS, which I saw pics of on a website I linked to.

That's disappointing to learn. I thought those were kinda cool and was looking forward to seeing them better.

Until they finally get tired of the whole damn thing.

There's discerning hardcore fans. There's fans that will pick up pretty much anything with the name on it. There's fans that go on a case by case basis. However, a casual fan is much less likely to pick up a technical, in universe book.

Well, if you're not a hardcore Trek fan, does it really matter? I mean, we are the only one's who will know it's not accurate...the general public doesn't really give a damn.

The fun is in nit-picking the inaccuracies; until a more definitive version comes out, it's just neat to add it to the collection. ;)

No I'd say the purists have built themselves up into a lather over the book and they've already made their views quite clear that they've no intention of buying or supporting this book. I don't understand why we just can't be fans and enjoy something for you know fun for once.

Go right ahead. Buy it. Enjoy it. Nobody's stopping you.

I've seen it. I wasn't impressed. I won't be buying it. That doesn't stop you from doing so.

I've bought all sort of Trek books for fun. This just won't be one of them.

Indeed, this book has been shrouded in quite a bit of scandal... changing delivery dates, size expectations, content inaccuracies, and now even missing pictures and profiles, lol. I got the book, and can enjoy it on a visual level, as I said, but I DO hope that next time, they at least put forth a serious effort to do better, and don't MISLEAD us, by keeping content OUT of the book, which we have been led to believe will be IN it.

Agreed. I think the first major red flag was the announcement that the JJ Prise would not be included in the book which many of us suspected anyway.
