USS ENTERPRISE HAYNES OWNERS MANUAL (Part 3)

Being an officially published book, they have to go with what's been established onscreen already. In Enterprise, they showed them as TWOK style casing, painted silver. So anything "official" is going to show that that's what they've always been through the years. Not that I'm in favour of that though. Also, Okuda had unput, but that doesn't mean that they listened to him.

Well, IDK if Warped9 or another TOS purist wants to chime in on this, but TOS Purist has told me that TOS torpedoes were energy bolts. He would know more than I would, so I take his word for it.

I saw a copy at B&N today and looked through it. I was actually pleasantly surprised. The CG renderings of the D in particular look great, and they went into quite a bit of detail on the D. They certainly could have done a lot worse.

I'm sorry, but are you blind?
That mesh is looks just bad.

^ Maybe to you but others might you know might actually enjoy this...jeez. Chapters still doesn't report having any copies in. I figure that it will take a few days for them to get it shipped and my store is one of the last to get shipments in. I expect my pre-order to arrive this morning.

How much is there on the TMP refit? Any cutaways? That's the version I'm most interested in.

Pages 62 through 77; one cutaway (similar to a poster that's out there for years), a few pictures from the films, ortho-renders of CG-model that was built for the Director's Cut - so, no complaints here, if you ignore the mesh-errors on the bridge-superstructure -, a floor-plan of the bridge (TUC-time), and a cutaway of the Transporter (in TNG-style, TUC-time).

All in all, nothing new.

'Tis a *nice* book. Aimed more at someone who might have a casual interest in Star Trek - maybe because of the movie.

But the Okudas should have been consulted on more of the text. There are a small number of whoppers that make you wonder what sources the authors used. ;)

There are cutaways on EVERY ship.
Apparently a number of these were taken from SciPubTech's series of starship cutaway posters without crediting the original artists: http://trekspert.blogspot.com/2010/11/credit-where-credit-is-due.html

I was excited about having a new tech book, but this one doesn't sound like a class act.

It sounds more like the individual artist bellyaching that he and his brother's names were not mentioned. I would think that if they did the poster art for SciPubTech, then SciPubTech would own the rights to it, and therefore be the party credited, or the party with say in how the art is used, but IDK.

In any case, I like the book a lot... might even get a second copy. :D

Just picked up one at B&N. I like it, and would recomend it, but there are some minor quibbles here and there for nitpicking, but that's half the fun!

On a book quality note, the page in my copy that shows the El-Baz type shuttlepod seems to have suffered from ink-bleed? anybody else notice this problem?

You guys talked me into it...looks like I'll be picking one up this weekend, for the ol' TOS library shelf...:techman:
Rob

That does suck if that guy and his brother weren't at least given credit and if the Haynes people did take it off their page. I do like that cutaway of the E though. Still not in stock at my Chapters yet...sigh, and it didn't arrive in the mail this morning like i had hoped. Notoriously slow at getting their orders out and stock in.

Hopefully, this is a case of not knowing all the facts.

There may have been a credit-free license paid to SPT to take their images and put it in this book. If that is the case, they would have likely contracted a HUGE amount of $$$ from Haynes (good news if true, it will give them much-needed revenue to finance more new poster designs) - and it would make sense, as their artists are more suited to drawing pictures of 20th-21st century Earth vehicles, not 22nd-24th century starships. If the assets are available and you have the cash, why not use them as 3rd party contractors? Most non-Trek enthusiasts would never know the difference; only the more limited Trekker demographic like what resides here on this board would catch it, and it seems that, of late, whether the fandom likes it or not, Paramount has been trying to market Trek to the general populace for some time now.

So I will reserve judgment until more info comes out on what happened (as a rule, I generally don't like supporting plagiarists). I will still get the book, as it does sound interesting, and Trek tech books are few and far between any more, sadly. Let's let cool heads prevail until we get more info. The SPT people probably know about this board and, if they feel they've been wronged, either they or other parties "in-the-know" will say something - unless they have and I've missed it entirely (always a possibility).

You know... I just noticed something, after having gone back, and looked at the book again...

NOWHERE in the actual book, did I see the pictures of the communicator and tricorder from TOS, which I saw pics of on a website I linked to.

That is weird.

I thought these were promotional pre-release images to get people to buy the book.

Is the shuttle whose interior accuracy everyone was complaining about in there?

^

Yeah, the TOS shuttle is in there, and is woefully inaccurate.

The more I see this book, the less and less I consider it to be a legitimate information source, and more along the lines of an RPG supplement tech book.
