What Did You Have For Dinner Last Night?

Last night, my wife wanted to order pizza, but I said "screw that." I whipped up a tomato sauce with roasted bell peppers, garlic and onions, cooked up some whole-grain linguine and finished the whole thing off with some turkey meatballs (nothing too complex -- ground turkey, with minced garlic, oregano, basil, bread crumbs, olive oil, Romano cheese, nutmeg, minced mushrooms and white pepper; I browned them on the stove and then tossed them into my vat of sauce to simmer for a few hours). Holy shit, that was fantastic.

I made orange chicken for the first time last night and it was pretty good! I know there are a few things I'd like to change, but I've just got to figure out exactly what they are.

The trick with orange chicken is to not over-do the ginger, and make sure that you're not afraid to use enough rice vinegar (I've used as much as a half a cup of the stuff when making it). Brown sugar is key, too.

I used all those things and I'm wondering if I should have added more ginger, if anything. I can't decide if it was too orangey, or too sweet, or what. I'll try leftovers tonight and try to assess what the issue was.

That's not to say it wasn't very good, because I was surprised by how much I liked it. Definitely better than some take-out I've had! I just want to tweak the recipe a bit next time.

A little ginger goes a looooooooooong way.

I made pot roast yesterday morning, and served it last night. Went apple picking in the afternoon and cut a few into the pot and cooked it in with things. Gave it a nice, fall taste. Thickened the gravy and had it over boiled red potatoes and along with a fresh grape fruit on the side.

We always cook on Sunday early if the Pats are on at 4:15. I shouldn't be around shoelaces or neckties much less cutlery during those games.

I had homemade beef stew, with red wine.

Afterward, I made a pot of tea.

Then, still later, I had a mug of what may be the most delicious beverage I have ever tasted: hot chocolate with Chartreuse liqueur.

Grilled chicken with buttered asparagus, couscous, steamed red potatoes, and a Blue Moon and orange twist from the tap. Absolutely delicious.

How much orange juice and lemon juice did you use? Both of those led to my first orange chicken attempt being a disaster.

Leftover kale and bean soup with duck sausage at 11 PM after night class. I grated gruyere cheese on top for good measure.

Beans, roughage, dairy, and sausage from an already fatty animal are a recipe for disaster normally, much less late at night 20 minutes before zonking out.
